Best foam brushes

I use foam 1 inch brushes for applying cetol on all the teak trim on our sailboat. These are the best foam brushes I have ever used. They don't fall apart or go soft quickly like the others.

Jen is the only foam brush good enoughj to use on Epiphanes

I have been using Epiphanes to varnish Marine Bright Work for 50 years. Jen Foam Brushes are the only ones I use. Other foam brushes deteriorate and are not sturdy enough to properly allow the varish to flow and rsultbin streaks or ""brush marks"".

Only foam brushes for varnishing

Have used JEN brushes for 20 years. They have maintained quality. Other foam brushes give out in an hour or less, will not hold up for the job.

Well Worth the Price

I've used the 1"" and 3"" versions of these brushes with varnish, water-based primers and one-part polyurethane topcoats. I actually get better results with the foam brushes than with expensive natural bristle brushes. I'm a believer.

Jen Foam Brushes save time.

For a DIYer varnishing brightwork I find that foam brushes perform and produce an excellent final result. Use one for each coat then just throw away which saves time and brush cleaning fluid over using say a badger hair brush. I like the 2"" foam and buy them by the box!

These foam brushes worked great with TotalBoat Wet Edge topside paint. Did not fall apart or leave pieces behind after using the same brush for hours.

I would not buy this again

The price is good, but the brushes fall apart with somewhat light use. I bought a box of them. The foam fell off of 3 out of 7 brushes I used while I was applying varnish the trim of a sailboat.

Questions

Q: the poly brushes I received come apart when using Interlux 2000E. Is this normal?

1 Answer

A: That is normal. According to the description they are ""Standard Foam Brushes for use with varnish, enamels, stains, latex, and oil paints"". 2000E is relatively thick two part epoxy that should be applied with a natural bristle brush or solvent resistant rollers. Rolling with a thin nap roller generally gives you the best results.

Q: What kind of brush or roller (made any where except China ) would I use to apply 110 degrees F. Hot bee's wax to a rough plastic surface for adhesion ? Thanks

1 Answer

A: I use a foam brush for beeswax application. I don't know if it will adhere to plastic. I usually use heated beeswax in mineral oil as a safe finish for cutting boards.

Q: Hi - I'm refinishing my boat interior with Interlux Schooner 96 varnish, applying it with a high quality ox hair bristle brush. I'm getting small amounts of dust in the dried finish, which I believe are coming from the brush, not the surrounding air. I'm considering using a foam brush for the final coat, to get a smoother, dust free finish. Can these brushes be used with Interlux varnish without falling apart? Thanks, Clark

A: Be sure to use a tack cloth immediately before varnishing. And before that, clean, clean clean after sanding. Be careful to use lint free cloths to wipe down surfaces. Wiping with alcohol AFTER cleaning and before tacking has helped me. JEN brushes are great, but do not try ordinary foam brushes, like from HD or Lowes.

Q: Will these brushes work with Awlwood? Thanks

3 Answers

A: I'm not familiar with Awlwood. However, I am an artist and prefer these foam brushes. They hold paint well, keep their firmness and wash well. I would guess they would work fine with just about any surface.
