VARNISH APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

Preparation

BARE WOOD: Sand with 80 grade (grit) paper. Wipe with Brushing Liquid 333. Apply sealer coat of Schooner reduced 10% with Brushing Liquid 333. PLYWOOD: Apply Inter-Prime Wood Sealer Clear 1026.

PREVIOUSLY VARNISHED WOOD: In Good Condition Sand surface with 120-150 grade (grit) paper and remove all dust. In Poor Condition If varnish is badly checked or peeling, remove finish to bare wood with Interstrip Semi-Paste 299E. Follow directions for varnishing bare wood.

Method Pour the amount you expect to use in a separate container. Strain it through a paint strainer to ensure there is no contamination. Apply at least 5-6 coats on bare wood and a minimum of 3 coats on previously varnished surfaces until a satisfactory finish is obtained. Sand between coats using 220-320 grade (grit) paper. Remove sanding residue with a rag dampened with Brushing Liquid 333.

Hints Mixing Do not shake. Stir gently.

Thinner Brush - Brushing Liquid 333. Spray - Special Thinner 216.

Cleaner Bare Wood - Brushing Liquid 333.

Ventilation and Humidity Control It is best to paint on warm, dry mornings. Cold weather retards the drying and humidity can spoil the gloss. Calm, cool, low humidity days are ideal.

Airless Spray Pressure: 170 bar/2500 psi. Tip Size: 0.33-0.41 mm/13-16 thou.

Conventional Spray Pressure Pot: Pressure: 3.44-4.47 bar/50-65 psi (gun pressure); 8-10 psi (pot pressure). Tip Size: 0.89-1.4 mm/35-50 thou. Siphon Cup: Pressure: 3.44-4.47 bar/50-65 psi - gun pressure. Tip Size: 1.5-1.8 mm/60-70 thou.

Brush Always use a clean brush that is kept specifically for varnishing. Clean brushes before use.

Roller If rolling, use a thin nap roller and "tip-off" with a clean natural bristle brush.

Other Spray pressures listed are recommendations only. The applicator may use any settings which yield the best results for the individual spraying technique and current weather conditions. To enhance appearance of the bare wood and fill porous open grain, apply Interstain according to label directions and allow to dry overnight.

Some Important Points Never leave bare wood exposed for long periods of time as it will absorb moisture. Avoid using Schooner straight from the can as this will cause it to age prematurely and may introduce contamination to the can. Failure to follow proper dry times carefully will cause improper drying, wrinkling and loss of adhesion. Avoid painting in direct sunlight. Product temperature should be minimum 10 deg C/50 deg F and maximum 29 deg C/85 deg F. Ambient temperature should be minimum 10 deg C/50 deg F and maximum 35 deg C/95 deg F. Substrate temperature should be minimum 10 deg C/50 deg F and maximum 29 deg C/85 deg F.

Compatibility/Substrates Apply to clean, dry, properly prepared surfaces only. Schooner can be applied over any varnish as long as it is adhered well and has been cleaned and sanded. Do not apply two part varnishes over Schooner.

SUPER Self leveling!

I use a water based varnish for 5 to 7 coats, coats I can put on in my basement where the fumes of Schooner are too strong. While easy to use, the water based (""bag-varnish"") doesn't self level. Once the weather warms a bit I will put on 2 or 3 coats of Schooner out in the garage. It DOES self level beautifully giving me the glassy smooth, amber finish I seek.

Haven't opened this recent can but have used schooner and Interlux for years. Don't mess around, go with the best! Best in the sun and for durability. I have used it for boats, Trunks and more. Anything that goes in your mouth or on your boat is worth getting the best!

Classic varnish

I have been using schooner varnish for about ten years and can compare it to some other similar products like Epiphanes and Total Boat Lust varnishes. I find the flow out of the Schooner varnish superior to the others and the UV inhibitors to be about equal. I am about to use Schooner Gold for my final two coats as that pricey varnish is said to con5ain the highest UV inhibitors on the marke5. We shall see. The Total Boat Lust needs thinning before use and requires some very special thinners, not so with the Schooner brand.

Flowed best when thinned 5-10%. Needs to be filtered especially after container has been opened. Had best results using small foam roller and occasional smoothing with foam brush. Use recommended thinning agent. Project was a 17 ft strip built boat.

Interlux Schooner Varnish

Put this varnish on my strip-built kayak six years ago. The varnish is still good but redoing the varnish due to scrapes and such. I like this better than other varnish I've used due to ease of application. It goes on smooth and flows well. I've used Interlux one part and two part paints and liked them so tried the varnish and found it to also be a very good product.

The very best

I have been a high end furniture maker for nearly 30 years. This is by FAR the very best varnish I've ever used.....bar NONE! In the last few years I've used all the big name marine varnishes...they're good, Schooner 96 is in a class by itself! I brush it on, but even spraying could not deliver a more even surface, this stuff flows/levels as efforlessly and perfectly as water!! And sanding!?!? after 24 hrs of drying it power sands to a fine dust, NO GUMMING I mean not even a hint! Truly amazing product!! If I may, a word to the manufacturer....do not under any circumstances change a thing about this varnish, you have reached absolute perfection.....a mighty rare thing these days. Thank you so much!!!

Still the Varnish Standard

Interlux Schooner remains the gold standard for finishing marine brightwork. It applies smoothly, flattens out and cures to a hard long lasting finish. As an added bonus, it smells great, like a spar varnish should! I have used many varnishes but Schooner remains my return to favorite. I highly recommend this product for a long lasting, classic look for marine brightwork. That said, you do need to apply multiple coats with light sanding between coats. Like any marine varnish it does attract dust, bugs and other nasties that need to be sanded smooth between coats.

Our 1955 Chris Craft was stripped & varnished in mid 1990's. keeping up with refresher coats using the same Interlux Schooner has kept it looking great. So much has changed with paint & varnish coatings yet there is no adverse results between today's Schooner & the original applied almost 20 years ago.

Best of the bunch

I've used a variety of varnish products on my Sabre but I always return to Interlux Schooner. Any varnish may work on little curved pieces like hand rails and trim, but Interlux Schooner is the only one that works on large flat areas because of its self-leveling properties, plus it really looks great. Renew with 3-5 coats every year and you'll be one happy boater.

Great buy on a great product

I purchased Schooner varnish because of recommendations I read on line. It worked great as a brush on finish. I sanded between each coat before recoating. Finish is beautiful for those who want the look and are willing to put in the labor. I appreciate the can sealing for shipment by Jamestown. As stated earlier, the two cans in the kit for a few dollors more than one can in the local store is a great incentive to check and use Jamestown on a regular basis.

Still My Favorite

The first boat I ever built was a Chesapeake Light Craft Kayak and I used Schooner varnish. As an absolute neophyte, I was able to produce a beautiful finish using a foam hotdog roller and foam brushes. Next, I built a Mahogany Glen-L runabout and used this on the interior. The results were the same. I have also used Epifanes which is an excellent product. But the diluting required is very important to get good results with that product. With Schooner, a slight dilution for the first coat and then let it rip after that. You can roll and tip at full strength and it just flows right on. It dries quicker too. Like all varnish, the temperature and humidity are very important. Too much of either will drastically impact the results. Surface prep is also very important. Follow the directions.

Q: null I've been using Schooner Gold on my Whaler woodwork for years. Have read the numerous negative reviews on the Gold. If I switch to the standard Schooner, would the color be the same as the Gold version? PS: spray application.

1 Answer

A: I've used both on wooden sea kayaks, over epoxied fiberglass.  The Gold took longer to dry and didn't self level nearly as well as the regular Schooner.  Lately I've been putting 6 or 8 coats of Halcyon, water based, fast drying varnish down to build up a base, and then 2 or 3 coats of Schooner for its self leveling and glassy finish.  Schooner AND  Halcyon will give you the classic amber color of the Gold.

A: Hi, I used this varnish for a bare/new wood ceiling for my outside porch about 3 years ago. Still looks beautiful like the day it was applied. I used the kit you can get from Jamestown Dist., here is the description: Go for Two! Our new JD Interlux Schooner Kit (SCHOONERKIT) includes (2) Quart cans of varnish, (2) foam brushes, (2) paint strainers, (2) stir sticks, and (2) plastic paint pails. This is a great value. You save on the varnish and receive brushes, strainers, and pails for free! https://www.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/show_product.do?pid=107&familyName=Interlux+Schooner+Varnish# I basically followed the instructions on the can. I also ordered the website recommended thiner: Interlux 216 Special Thinner Interlux 216 Special Thinner is a fast evaporating solvent which when added to specified paint coatings improves drying in cold climates, and facilitates spray application. 216 Thinner is also recommended for removing sanding residue from hull bottoms, wiping down bare aluminum clean, and for the general clean-up of paint equipment. Available in Pint, Quart, and Gallon sizes. https://www.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/show_product.do?pid=130 I also used a badger brush to apply, which worked really well for the ceiling I was doing – you can purchase this from Jamestown Dist.: Redtree Badger Hair Brushes https://www.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/show_product.do?pid=2113&familyName=Redtree+Badger+Hair+Brushes Jamestown Dist. Has an enormous amount of info regarding using this varnish – you should look there for the best info. Regarding your question about bubbles, I did not have any bubbles, but I cannot recall if I thinned the coats as I went or started with a thinned coat initially and added less thinner for each successive coat as I went, but I am sure I read what to do from the can or from the website and followed those instructions. It sounds like you application is a boat so I have no special advice for you. You will need to do some research. Hope this helps somebody. BTW, all of the items in the SCHOONERKIT  turned out to be essential, as well as the badger brush and thinner. Good luck!

Q: null Can I thin the last coat by 5% so to get no bubbles? Or should I use it full strength? Is ther a different dilution percent

2 Answers

A: You can thin the first coat or two, but I wouldn't thin the last coats. If you shake and not stir the varnish in the can, you can end up with bubbles, but usually you can tip off the varnish after it is applied to remove those. If the temp. of your substrate is changing while you are applying the first coat of varnish, it can 'outgas' into the wet varnish causing bubbles: varnish and wood substrate should be at the same temp. Cheers.

Q: null For years my father used to prime bare wood that was to be used outdoors with marine spar varnish cut 50% with turpentine. The theory was the thin varnish would penetrate the bare wood and seal it very well. He would then apply two finish coats of uncut marine spar varnish. Please comment on whether you think this is a good approach or if there is a better primer sealer. My current thought is to prime as above and use a high quality exterior paint top coat. Thanks.

4 Answers

A: You can thin the varnish, I'm not sure that I would blindly recommend turpentine without checking for compatibility, but thinning the first 2-3 coats helps seal the outer grain and give the varnish a foundation. Then 3-6 coats of unthinned or barely thinned varnish (sometimes you need 2-5% thinner for a little flow and workability). There are products such as Interlux 2016, Pettit 2018, and TB Wood Sealer that are pre-thinned varnishes for the first 2-3 coats, that are designed for quick dry and a hard cure as a strong foundation, and no thinning is required for those products.
