APPLICATION INFORMATION
Vivid contains cuprous thiocyanate and as a result of this there is a tendency for settling to occur, especially if the paint has been on the shelf for several months. It is necessary to thoroughly mix the paint before using. If possible, shake the can of paint on a mechanical paint shaker. Before using, check the sides and bottom of the can to make sure all the pigment has been mixed in. If mixing is going to be done with a wooden paddle or an electric drill mixer, pour off half of the liquid from the top of the can into another can and then properly mix in any settled pigment; then remix the two parts together thoroughly.

Adhere to all application instructions, precautions, conditions, and limitations to obtain optimum performance. Refer to individual labels and tech sheets for detailed instructions when using associated products, etc. Vivid is a high solids products. Do not apply this paint in thick films or in more than four coats as poor adhesion may result. When applying by roller use a short nap (3/16 inch maximum) roller cover. Product can be thinned up to 10% (12 ounces per gallon) without any loss in performance. Do not thin beyond your state's compliant limit.

SURFACE PREPARATION
Coating performance, in general, is proportional to the degree of surface preparation. Follow recommendations carefully, avoiding shortcuts. Inadequate preparation of surfaces will virtually assure inadequate coating performance.

MAINTENANCE
No antifouling paint can be effective under all conditions of exposure. Man made pollution and natural occurrences can adversely affect antifouling paint performance. Extreme hot and cold water temperatures, silt, dirt, oil, brackish water and even electrolysis can ruin an antifouling paint. Therefore, we strongly suggest that the bottom of the boat be checked regularly to make sure it is clean and that no growth is occurring. Lightly scrub the bottom with a soft brush to remove anything from the antifouling paint surface. Scrubbing is particularly important with boats that are idle for extended periods of time. The coating is most effective when the boat is used periodically.

*The below dry times are minimums. Vivid may be recoated after the minimum time shown.

Versatile and Effective

Pettit Vivid has been effective for me on a 13' Boston Whaler moored in an estuary on the south side of Falmouth, MA. The combination of a hard and ablative bottom paint works well for an area where slime build up is a concern. Ablative paints wear off too easily when frequently sponging off slime. Vivid holds up well all season. I have not gotten multi-season performance and have to re-apply each year. I buy the white (1161) because it can be tinted to match the Outrage Grey color of my hull.

Great results, nice hull color match

Used this on an 15 ft whaler I bought that had been trailered only. Hull was pristine. I was concerned about preserving the look. I knew I had to use a bp since it would be in all season ( North Shore, MA). Went with the white. It has been amazing. Boat sits in the water all season. Occasional nylon brush some brown scum near waterline at the beach and power wash it at end-of-season haul-out and its like new again. First application lasted 3 seasons. Could have pushed it to 4, but with first application I was too low on the waterline location. Needed to creep up a few inches. Just got through the season on second application - same result and no more growth or scum above adjusted waterline. I am purchasing a new 23 center next season. Mentioned Vivid to dealer and said he had the same experience I had with the product. Will use it again for sure.

Use a short roller as the directions suggest. I rolled and did not tip. Finish came out smooth, rolling and tipping this product would make it come out perfectly smooth. 28 x 9'6"" power boat only took 1 gallon for 2 coats, 1/2 what the manufacturer suggested.

Vivid White is a Delight

Racing bottom on J/30. Put on 3 thinned coats with a foam roller over a smooth bottomwith a couple of extra coats at the waterline. The white makes seeing the slime visible for in water bottom cleaning and looks good too. Since the white will show 5 o'clock shadow at the waterline if not cleaned for a couple of weeks, it forces you to clean the bottom regularly. For me this is a feature, not a bug. This will be my third season with Vivid White.

Great product when applied correctly!

This product is great when applied correctly, I had an issue with it, I called Pettit and they explained to me the mud cracking was because I applied it too thick. They said, use a 3/16"" nap roller or less. They would rather see me applied 3 very thin coats than 1 or 2 very thick coats. This product uses a non traditional resin structure and needs to be applied THIN! I wait a day in between coats to make sure its totally dry. Long story short, I applied as described and I love the product!!!! I've been using for 5 years now and would never try anything else!

Abrasion resistant, effective paint

I am a professional captain who manages large catamarans and power yachts. I have been using Vivid for more than four years here in southern Florida, in very high fouling environments. The paint has held up well, and averages 18-20 months of good protection from hard growth. It does as well as any other top of the line paint stopping slime/soft growth. Good features: - effective in brackish and fresh water, not ruined like Micron66 - reasonable price for multi-season use - very durable paint, does not wear or rub off prematurely - light colors, especially white, work better If ""mud cracking"" is observed,as mentioned in a previous review, the paint was applied incorrectly (too thick or too many coats too quickly). If the paint is not thouroughly mixed, the antifouling results will be poor or spotty. If the paint is peeling, the prep work was faulty, or multiple coats applied too quickly. Any bottom paint will need to be cleaned by wiping/diving, if the boat sits idle a lot of the time. If not maintained, any paint will let growth accumulate. I have seen this lack of maintenance cause problems with all paint brands. Downgrading any paint rating because of failure to maintain it due to dumb local environmental regulations (Puget Sound), lack of attention, or improper application, is not accurate reporting.

Worst Paint on the market!

Bought the paint from J.D. Used it on a restoration job. Within 6 months my client called me up and said the paint was flaking off the boat every ware !!! [...] I have worked on boats for many years now so it left me speechless as I watched the paint just fall off the boat as it sat at my shop waiting to get redone. I talked to Pettit about this problem as well. They drove out and inspected the boat themselves and saw first hand the problem and because some of the paint went above what they determined was the water line, they said the paint was misused and that they would not stand behind it!!! If you talk to paint representatives from other companies they will not only confirm hearing similar stories but they even have a name for it. ""They call it mud cracking"" I will NEVER use a pettit product again!

Superlative results for our boats

I take care of two 23' wooden row/sail boats that spend the summers in a freshwater river with occasionally trailering to other freshwater areas. Prior to using this paint, we had significant native and zebra mussel issues, and our bottoms were getting very worn. We painted the bottom of one boat three years ago and the other boat two years ago. Since then annual clean up is practically as minimal as I can imagine, and reapplication doesn't take that much paint. The results look pretty sharp (though brush strokes will show) and the lack of marine growth is perfect. Even scraping the bottoms on a sandy shore doesn't damage the paint surface very much.

Not Recommended

I applied two coats of Vivid over a newly primed bottom. After just three months the bottom is full of barnacles and growth. I never had this problem when I used Interlux Micron or even the cheaper BoatersWorld ablative paint. Do not use this paint if you plan to leave your boat in the water, it is not effective at all.

For me it's perfect!

After much research, I applied two coats to my unpainted 1987 28' Bayliner used in brackish fresh water in Lake Champlain. The Pettit people were more that helpfull in making my decision and advice for application. The color showed a bit dirty after three days from launch, but not really objectionable. It never darkened any more by end of season haul-out. A quick wipe with a sponge brings it back to bright white. For the first time ever, the bottom was free of slime growth and the pesky Zebra mussel. I couldn't be happier!

This is a follow up to my comments on 6/9/09. After one season in long island sound my results included at least 2"" of hard growth. barnacles, mussels, and all sorts of living seafood. My mooring ball was painted with leftover micron extra and shows very little groth. very disappointed. Not recommended.

Good hard ablative bottom paint

My results are a hard ablatives finish. Harder than CSC. I used a 1/4"" roller so the finish was orange peal. use a foam roller or brush for a more smooth finish. The brite color is sure to turn some heads. recommended

Happy with product[...]

I did a lot of research to arrive at my decision to use this product. Nobody at my local marinas had used it, and everyone was quick to recommend their own favorite paint. After emails and phone calls with the manufacturer's rep, I was confident enough to try the Vivid product. I also used the epoxy barrier coat as part of an entire bottom overhaul. My boat is a high performance fishing boat with a blue hull and I wanted to keep the white color contrast with a 'hard ablative' product. With 4 coats, the paint has held up over two seasons going on three with no marine growth problems other than slime which is easily scrubbed off (boat sits at the dock for long periods). Has been trailered and power washed after seasonal haul-out and the painted surface is fine. Application was easy, too.

Marina Scrubbing to Clean Illegal

I race a 30 foot sail boat in Puget Sound. Local regulations prohibit scrubbing the paint in the marina at dock side because of water polution from the released fog of material during the scrbbing. Divers can't and won't clean the bottom. One must haul out which is expensive and time consuming. I believe the statement ""Hard low drag finish that can be brunished for racing for a racing advantage "" is misleading. However, it is easy to apply and to clean off growth. In the Puget Sound area Trinidad is better for racers but not compatible with Vivid.

Very Pleased

I switched over from CSC after recommendations from a race boat captain and a bottom diver. Very pleased with the results. Using a foam roller I was able to get a smooth finish and the bottom stayed cleaner longer than the CSC used last year. Application was a little tricky in the cold as the paint had a consistency of gelcoat. Support told me to use of little of thier thinner which worked well. Surface prep is important when switching any bottom paint, so check compatibility with the existing paint first. The real white color looks good and makes cleaning much easier.

Nice thing is you can get a bright color which makes cleaning the bottom easy. I didn't like the performance and had a tendency to flake off if not applied correctly. Good paint if color is important to you but i like other paints better

Q: Can Vivid be used over Pettit Trinidad? The Trinidad is two seasons old, in good shape. Also, have to adjust waterline up a few inches. What preparation over gel coat?

2 Answers

A: Hi Bob. Yes, Pettit Vivid can be used over Trinidad. Pettit recommends sanding the clean Trinidad surface first before applying. Over the gelcoat, clean the surface thoroughly with 92 Bio-Blue Hull Surface Prep. Sand thoroughly with 80 grit sandpaper to a dull, frosty finish and rewash the sanded surface with 120 Brushing Thinner to remove sanding residue before applying Vivid.

Q: i am interested in buying a fresh water sailboat which has a barrier coat over the gel coat and Vivid White bottom pain on it. The boat is only in the water when sailed (essentially dry sailed) because it has a hydro hoist. I am planning on moving it to the Gulf coast and leaving it in the water. .The current bottom paint looks great but is probably is 5-7years old. Since it has been out of the water so long should I expect the ablative quality to have deteriorated or should I be able to put it into service as-is?

2 Answers

A: As you might expect-- it depends. As you point out, the boat has been dry-sailed which does minimize the breakdown of the antifouling biocides. Which means you can figure on the maximum amount of multi-season protection-- often listed as 3-4 years. Fresh water IS easier on antifouling paint, but you should also figure in ancillary ""erosion"" from other wetting factors like rain, dew condensate, etc. All to say, the present paint has probably reached the end of its active life. A new coat of antifouling would give you peace of mind now... and it is much easier to apply to a clean bottom now than it will be on a ""fuzzy bottom"" in 6 months.

A: Hello, I put the same paint on my wooden boat and it's only been in the water twice in the past 18 months and it still seems fine. The rest of the time it's been outside under a tarp. As you know it's an ablative paint so it will have a semi-flat finish until it gets wet. I polished my finish a little more by wet sanding with 1000 grit emory paper. hope this helps
