I would buy this product again

I use Sikkens Cetol Marine Satin for my front door. It is the best in terms of its warm color, toughness and ease of application. Nothing comes close. And Jamestown Distributors packed well, with special brackets on the can lid to keep it secure during transport and a specially designed box to prevent the can from dents. I was very happy with the shipment.

Has to be warm enough outside temperature to dry. Gets darker with each cost so have to switch to clear once you get desired color.

Not a varnished finish, but TOUGH

I'm using this on the railing on a residential deck. The rail is tight knot Port Orford Cedar and I wanted a tough, UV resistant finish that wouldn't rub off on clothing when folks lean on the rail as some of the stains will. 2 coats on so far and it looks good, but a bit streaky...it doesn't want to brush down evenly. Could be my prep. The 2nd coat is covering the brush streaks and I'm hoping the third coat will even it all out. I used it on some teak hatchboards many years ago and the longevity can't be beat! I wasn't after a ""yacht quality"" finish as much as a long lasting ""park-your-beer-here"" job.

Very pleased!

I bought a boat with gray weathered teak and figured it was time to give her some love! After a good sanding to get the ridged out and the gray off, I simply wiped the wood down with a damp cloth. After letting the wood dry thoroughly it was time to apply the first coat! The cetol goes on easily, and blends well making it easy to get an even coat. Make sure to tape up around the edges! Stray drops cleaned up without too much hassle with a little water and elbow grease. Alcohol or thinners might work better but didnt spill enough to warrant it. The hardest part is waiting 24 hours to put on the next coat because we had fun slapping it on! We used 2 coats of marine and 2 coats of gloss.

I applied Sikkens Cetol Marine to a well weathered wooden deck. It had been treated, and linseed oil mix or commercial wood preserative had been applied, but none for several years. I can not, yet, speak to its durability. However, as to its application and immediate appearence, the result has been excellent. The first coat was applied on a very windy day, but the wind did not cause any problems. The viscosity is excellent. The varnish clings to the brush, yet spreads smoothly. It also readily sinks into cracks. It was a few days before I got to the second coat application, and I was able to see the good water proofing effect after just one coat. I anticipate a good, long lasting effect after the recommended three coats.

Excellent Product Line

See my review of the companion product, Cetol Marine Gloss. This is the required undercoating for the Cetol Marine Gloss. It does contain pigment that will darken the golden color of your wood, so if you are concerned about that issue, check first on a donor piece of wood. They do sell a clear or near clear version of this product, but I wanted this one because it will keep UV light off the wood and keep the wood from changing color. Great product line, far superior to regular varnishes or other synthetics, in my opinion.

Q: Cleaning between maintenance coatings. What is the suggested method to clean debris from a Sikkens Finnish after one season of service?

1 Answer

A: Clean with all purpose boat soap. If mildew is present use a mild teak cleaner with a fine or medium scotch-brite pad.

Q: Working on my sailboat exterior teak rub-rail, and make a big mistake. I opened the wrong can, and instead of applying Cetol Natural Teak first, I mistakenly put Cetol Gloss directly on the prepped wood. What should I do? How serious is this? Can I just leave it and get through a sailing season (much preferred option), or does it have to be stripped/sanded off now? Will it do harm to leave it? If strip, should I use a chemical stripper, or hand strip with heat gun and sandpaper?

A: I would just leave it and take care of it next season. it won't make a difference. sand it off with 220 when your ready, sikkens sands easily. I use it on the deck of my chris craft even through it says not to and just lightly sand with 220 yearly and recoat. its a good choice because it never cracks, lifts, or peels. much less work than a varnish. hope this helps

Q: Cetol application instructions say ""do not apply in direct sunlight"". Does that mean it can only be used indoors? Can I use an umbrella or canopy long enough to apply, and then move the cover and allow to dry in sunshine? What happens if I apply in sunlight?

3 Answers

A: I have applied this in direct sunlight before many times. Best not to, but if it's hard to avoid I would apply it as early in the day as possible. You have to work a little faster to maintain a wet edge but it's not all that much of an inconvenience. The thing you have to watch for on a hot day is the formation of small bubbles if the wood is very porous. Maybe try it on a small area to see if that is a problem. Same thing can happen with varnish. Good luck. This is a great product in terms of longevity. I use it on most of my exterior wood.

Q: I am plan to use Sikkens Centol Cetol on teak, is there an additional sealer I can use after wards to help prevent UV damage. the project I am doing is a really pain to sand and not looking forward to doing this again in 1 year. thanks

1 Answer

A: That is the nature of most one part varnishes. The best way to get a long lasting finish is to apply many coats. The outer coat will get degraded by UV so it is not uncommon for most one-part finishes to require an annual maintenance coat. Fortunately Cetol is easy to maintain and re coat as needed.

Q: Can Sikkens marine be used on tigerwood or Ipe?

1 Answer

A: Yes to both Tigerwood and ipe.  Both are pretty beautiful on their own.  IMO Cetol will just protect them, not make them any better looking. David Hart

Q: Can cetol be applied to surfaces sealed with epoxy?

A: Yes but you have to let the epoxy fully cure and then scrub the amine blush off with a 3m scrub pad and plenty of fresh water. Then lightly sand and wipe sanding residue off with denatured alcohol. After dry apply the Cetol. Randy

Q: which Sikkens Cetol is the darkest color? cetol marine Natural teak, cetol marine, cetol marine gloss

A: Natural teak is darker. I use Marine on my signs because it is nearly clear and doesnt obstruct my inlays. Thos is what the marine looks like on cypress.
