Product Details

Owatrol Deks Olje is a 2-step wood finishing system that is easier to apply and maintain than traditional varnish. D1 is applied first. Deks Olje D1 is a specially formulated penetrating oil that soaks deep into teak wood and other marine wood grain, producing a rich transparent matte finish. The oil helps strengthen wood against the deteriorating effects of sun, salt, wind, and foot traffic for increased durability. If you desire a matte finish similar to rubbed Tung oil, D1 is the only step necessary.

If you wish to continue to a high gloss finish, apply D2 over the D1. Deks Olje D2 is easy to apply and produces a hard, flexible gloss coating that doesn't chip or peel like varnish. Fully cured, D2 is slightly softer than traditional varnish but very easily maintained. You may blend seamless touchups to high wear areas with D2.

Info & Guides
Owatrol Deks Olje penetrates wood, rather than simply coating the surface. It has no UV inhibitors, meaning it is a true clear finish that enhances the true beauty of wood underneath. The penetrating oil naturally strengthens wood fiber and prevents weathering degradation. For best results, first clean wood with Owatrol Wood Deck Cleaner.

Matte Finish Apply D1 to new or cleaned wood. D1 may also be overcoated with any other type of varnish. D1 is the first step continuing on with D2 high gloss application.

Satin Gloss Finish After first applying D1, apply two final coats of blended D1 & D2, 50:50 mix.

High Gloss Finish After first applying D1, finish with six coats of D2.

re-visit of an old friend

Teak deck chaises and folding chairs. Goes on easily, quickly, and cleanly. Recommend much patience to get to the point where it no longer soaks in. About 20 years back I soaked a home-made mesquite oyster-knife handle in this product...looks about the same now as when it dried two decades back.

Deks Ojie not the same product that it used to be.

I have used Deks Oljie D1 since the 1970's on the white cedar interior of my Whitehall rowboat. I recently bought a new quart of this and applied it. It may look the same but it is highly toxic stuff. In the 70's this product was made with danish oil and maybe turps mix but now the Owatrol company that bought the rights to make this have changed the chemical makeup,.. Do not use it without using a seriously good respirator. The same goes for the other Owatrol product Cetol. I suspect they must use the same mix of toxic stuff in Deks Oljie D1 as they have always used in Cetol

I used this on Yellow Cedar floor boards for my gaff sloop. I found the finished product soft and easily marred, so I added several coats of spar varnish over it, I would not use it on its own as a finish in traffic areas.

This is my 5th. time I purchased this item in the past 20 years. I don't use much, but I use it on my swim decks and on the teak around my windshield. It's easy to use and it does not darken my teak. It keeps it natural.

Just bought '67 36' Trojan The deck was in bad shape. The deck had been varnished and it was cracked and peeling and looked horrible. It took me three days to sand it all off. I had used Deks Olje on my first boat; a 1962, 30' Trojan and it came out fine and was quite durable. I did not want a shiny, slick finish in the deck and chose Deks Olje 1 as I wanted something to penetrate into the wood and to protect. I have one coat on it now and the people on my dock have commented positively on the way it looks. I am quite satisfied as to how it has turned out and plan on putting one or two more coats down.

Major disappointment. I have used Deks Olje D1 on several different projects from outdoor teak furniture to teak toe rails and seats to an ipe outdoor shower and been less than pleased with any of the results. I've been painting, varnishing, refinishing, and working with wood for 30 years and know the importance of following manufacturers' instructions, so my prep and application aren't the issue. Deks goes on looking amazing. Once dry it looks nice. Once it has weathered a few months some of the wood has faded, mildew is growing in the wood seemingly beneath the sealer, and, in the case of ipe, much of the sealer has vanished and there is algae and mildew growing. Deks says to simply wash the grayed wood with their cleaner and reapply D1. No sanding needed. Great, now I had clean, gray teak with mildew spots that I then had to pressure wash and sand back to new wood before re-sealing (see pic of table top). Based on all the glowing reviews I want to like this product, but it has done nothing but disappoint me and my clients. Is topping D1 with a couple coats of D1 and D2 mixed 50/50 the answer? Is adding 12 coats of D2 at 12 hour intervals the answer? I hesitate to invest nearly $100 in a can of D2 and hours of labor to find out.

Q: Deks Olje D1 and D2 What is the recommended humidity for application?

1 Answer

A: The tech sheets listed on the website do not mention humidity specifically but they do say ""Do not apply DEKS OLJE® D.2 in wet weather or late in the day when dew or fog may be expected. This may dull a newly set film causing it to blush - exposure to sunlight usually removes the discoloration.""

A: Weathered gray will be black under any finish other than paint. Best look if you sand the wood to its natural color.

Q: I did a teak patio furniture set with Deks D1 last spring and it grew terrible mildew over the last year despite being in full sun on a patio. I had prepped the hell out of the teak as it had been left out for years with no treatment or care and was literally black. Wish I could post pics. I washed it with 2 part teak cleaner and a pressure washer, sanded it thoroughly, and applied Deks per instructions. It was so bad this spring I had to pressure wash it and sand back to clean wood. Why so much mildew? What did I do wrong?

A: Hi there, I have been using Deks D1 on my outdoor teak Adirondack chairs for several years now.? Over the course of 12-18 months the furniture turns dark gray and some of the shady parts get a green tint from green algae.? The amount of algae depends on the amount of rain we get. I also get green spots on my patio. Last year in the Mid Atlantic (I live in MD) was particularly wet.? I also live in/near the woods. I pressure wash the teak furniture about every 12-18 months, sand the parts that will be touched by people as pressure washing leaves a rough surface, and apply D1 (which is basically teak oil).? The teak oil as far as I can tell simply prevents the wood from cracking and slows down the graying down a bit. I live in MD so we get some extremely hot weather in July and August along with thunderstorms (perfect for growing green algae). I have not applied D2 (a varnish) over the oiled teak which would seal it and possibly prevent the algae growth. My concern is that that the varnish, in the sun, will merely crack in a few years and make a mess.? The D2 also takes an incredibly long time to cure ? 12-24 hrs before you can touch it and 48-72 hrs before you can light sand between coats. When sanding between coats, I use 600 wet and dry paper and keep it wet.? I know this because I just redid all the mahogany in my 1977 Boston Whaler using stains and D2. The boat stays in the garage when not in use so the sun beating on the varnish is not an issue. Having said the above, I have seriously considered staining one of my small teak tables with a semi-transparent stain to see how that works. Hope this helps, Duncan Brown

Q: I am coating a new pine floor of 350 square feet, how much product will I need to cover it.

A: Hi Bill We love DO and have converted all the varnish on our boat to DO. It is much easier to prepare and apply – it is very forgiving, compared to how careful you have to be with varnish. The downside is we have to do a maintenance coat every 6 months – but that is out in the sun and weather. You'll have to check the specs for coverage (see attached). If it is bare wood, you will need to ""coat"" up to 9 times with DO1 – keeping it wet with oil until it stops absorbing – which we find ourselves recoating every 15-20 minutes, depending on absorptive quality of the wood. DO1 leaves a matt finish, probably not hard enough for a floor, so I would then coat with DO2 which leaves a harder gloss finish. You can get the overcoating interval between DO1 and DO2 from the specs – I think you have to leave DO1 for 3 days before coating with DO2. Then DO2 for 5-6 coats, leaving at least 24 hours between coats, but can be longer, as long as you complete DO2 within about 4 weeks. You can get DO in larger quantities – 1l, 2.5l, 20l. Hope this helps Colin Glennie

Q: Deks' product guide says that it is a good primer for ""single pack decorative coatings"". I am wondering if it would be a good primer under exterior house paint on window boxes? I ask because I need to seal the red cedar from water absorption, but I need to the paint the outside white. Hoping I can seal the entire box with 1 very durable product, and then paint the outside with white waterborne paint. Thanks!

A: Sorry for taken so long to get back you very Busy winter . I have use Deks Olje 1 for over 30 yrs have had great successes with this product. Word of warning about 20yrs age I use Deks 1 and then top coated with Deks 2 the problem was you had to light sand the Deks 2 every 4-5 weeks and recoated. Which was more maintenances than I had time for. I strip the teak down over the winter and went to just went back to using Deks 1 now I only have oil the teak once or twice a season with better results

A: If it hasn't been out in the weather you should be fine. The great thing about Olje is another coat sort of softens the existing coat. Even when you have d2 on top of the d1 (if you scratch the surface) you can use d1 to soften and mend the scratch. Love Deks Olje!
