A Float Switch that Floats?

I have used several of these over the years. Can somebody PLEASE invent a float switch that FLOATS! put a penny's worth of foam in it. They always end up leaking and filling with water, which means your boat also fills with water. They also have a tendency to stick. Despite all of this, I have not found a suitable replacement. Buy two and use one as a back up. I guess I will reluctantly recommend it as I am about to order another!

Unreliable Float Switch

The Rule 35 bilge float switch failed after only 6 months, and it failed in the ON position, draining my boat's battery and burning up my new bilge pump (once the water level dropped and the pump never cooled down).

This switch works

Works great when it works. Meaning that I purchased two (one spare) and one did not work. To much trouble to return it however the one that worked really works. I replaced an older Rule switch that sustained considerable abuse and was not something that one would wish to rely. Easy to install. Just follow the directions.

Time will tell

This is the new style mercury-free switch. I have always liked the reliability and simplicity of mercury switches. The new style click switch works fine when new. Time will tell if it is as good as the old mercury switch. The new style is a little larger, so consider this if clearance is an issue. This switch fits in my shower sump with 1/8"" clearance, but it is working.

Rule-amatic float switch and 800gph pump

The float switch and pump works great, but I can't figure the priceing guide lines? I got priceing from 37$ to 39.99$ for just the float switch alone. Then I got a sale book from A LOCAL MARINE STORE for a Rule 800gph.and float switch combo for 39.99? model #8935876. Can anybody honestly explain this? I realise buying seperatly costs more, but common get your head out of the clouds! and your hands out of us boaters pockets.I would recomend this product to a friend, but caution him to shop around for priceing as there seems to be no set priceing that anyone should be charging!

Q: Can this switch be used for a 6 volt DC pump?

2 Answers

A: Rule states the voltage range for this specific switch is 12/24/32 VDC. I realize that voltage maximum is usually more of a factor, you may want to contact Rule directly. It may also be dependent on the wire gauge they use for the float switch, as it would probably need a thicker gauge is my guess.

Q: HOW DO YOU WIRE TO PUMP, ANDCAN YOU USE EXISTING PUMP OR DOES IT HAVE TO BE A RULE PUMP?

5 Answers

A: For sure use your existing pump- I think you need to have the Amp rating match- which they inevidently probably do. The wiring is -- no problem- Just insert the Switch into the 'circuit' with the Pump. Each has two wires. Connect One of the wire from Pump to One of the wires of the switch. I use a 'heat shrinked' connector. Leaving One wire 'free' from the swith and one wire free' from the Pump- these go to your Plus and Minus power source. As you can see I am an 'idiot-savant' electrician- but it worked OK for me
