Product Details

TotalBoat Teak Cleaner is a two-part system that thoroughly cleans and restores the natural golden color and beautiful grain of your boat's teak deck and other teak surfaces. Part A removes sealers, graying, and weathering, and lifts dirt, stains, salt, and mildew. Part B neutralizes Part A and brightens the teak. Kit includes 1 Quart Part A and 1 Quart Part B.

Info & Guides
Application

Wet the teak surface to be cleaned. While the surface is wet, apply TotalBoat Teak Cleaner Part A to the teak, disperse the solution and scrub lightly across the grain with a soft-bristle brush or Scotch-Brite pad. The teak will darken with residue that is cleaned from the wood. Never scrub in the direction of the grain, as doing so will remove wood fiber. Rinse thoroughly with water and continue scrubbing lightly across the grain, removing most of the residue. Also, rinse clean any brush or pad used to scrub teak.

While still wet with fresh water, apply Part B, using the brush or pad to disperse and scrub lightly across the grain. The teak will lose the dark brown color and start to lighten. Rinse Part B off thoroughly with fresh water.

Allow teak to dry to a light, golden color, at least 48-72 hours. Do not attempt to seal, oil, or varnish during this period.

The cleaning process may raise the outer grains. If so, a light sanding will take the grains back down. If persistent stains remain after cleaning, perform cleaning process again.

Caution: Do not allow TotalBoat Teak Cleaner to come into contact with painted surfaces or aluminum surfaces. Mask around the area to be cleaned to prevent staining of surrounding areas.

If Part A gets onto fiberglass or gelcoat, neutralize with Part B to avoid damage or staining. Do not leave Part A on an caulking or seams for more than 5 minutes without neutralizing with Part B.

Excellent and Easy to Use

We had two pieces of teak that had never been refinished - one from 2006 (arm chair) and another from 2010 (leaf table). This could not have made refinishing them any easier. Applied as directed, and used a purple ScotchBrite brillo pad to remove the grime. Then I lightly sanded the wood with 220 paper. Applied 2 coats of the teak oil and we're back in business. Took a few days to achieve the final product, but all-in-all, these products just made it all possible to keep and recycle precious teak wood. Highly recommend.

I used to use the other brand.

Total boat Teak Cleaner has been my go to for 3 years now. I just had the opportunity to truly test it against the ""other brand"". We purchased a gallon on A & B from the brand I used for years, we were refinishing the teak furniture at a Hamptons Estate we maintain. My guys were used to the OB, so I figured why change. They ran out-had 4 chairs left- I quickly raided my personal stash and gave it to them. The lead called an hour later and accused me of holding out on him. The Total Boat crushed the OB in his eyes...Mine too.

40 year old boats teak toe rail

I completely sanded our toe rail 2 years ago and started to redo it again. I wasn't very happy with the results- lots of black and some grey water damage stilled showed thru the teak stain. So I bought this and carefully followed the directions, before applying the teak finish. It looked so much better and I'm very pleased.

Teak Cleaner

Have new Teak furniture that I sealed with Teak Sealer. It worked well but by the end of the summer was getting dark stained areas in some of the wood. I used this cleaner and it worked very well. Now have to re-seal the teak next spring. Wish there was a more permanent way to prevent stains but this works great in removing them and is very easy to use.

I will buy this product again to finish my sailboat deck.

I used this to clean my dirty, mildewed and too gray teak boat deck. Part A turned the wood very dark, almost black and with a scotch brite pad removed the debris. Part B neutralized Part A and brightened the teak. Finished with Semco Natural sealer-used a foam brush (watch out for drips) and wiped with a clean rag. Beautiful!!

My Teak Looks Brand New!

My boyfriend and I are in the process of restoring a 2006 wooden sailboat. As you can imagine - there is lots of teak. We followed the directions and used part A + B cleaner before oiling the teak and we couldn't believe how well it shined up. It looks brand new now - and not to mention the process was super easy. It was so satisfying to watch all the dirt and grime come up after years of sitting on the hard.

Good, but not amazing

I tried this product on my neglected teak grating deck and some mahogany coaming. The teak came out okay, but the mahogany looked blotchy after using this product. I ended up going back and sanding everything anyway. If you teak is in fair shape, this is probably worth the money, but I would not use it on anything else.

Have a neglected 27 year old teak deck that was never cleaned. Tried Total Boat teak cleaner and couldn't believe how it lifted the dirt and grime out of the teak. Results way beyond expectations and very easy to use. Wouldn't use anything else.

Questions

Q: Hey Paul, I appreciate your great answer to my question yesterday about using this product to clean mahogany. Sounds like a perfect solution. Clearfinish sounds like a great option for varnish. What do you recommend for wood coatings? Do coatings impact the color of the finish? I would like to stay as close to the native mahogany finish as possible. Thanks again! Jeff

1 Answer

A: Most of the coatings have an amber tint. Cetol Marine Light has less tint and gives the wood a nice color. Halcyon is best for a clear finish.

Q: I saw the question about using this product on mahogany. I have some well-worn (and abused) mahogany outdoor furniture and I'm trying to decide if I should sand or clean it with this product. Will cleaning bring out the natural color of the mahogany better than sanding alone? Also, what product should I use to finish the furniture in order to maintain the natural color? Thank you!

A: I have had excellent results using TotalBoat Teak cleaner on mahogany. Coating options generally fall into 3 categories, oils which are easy to apply but need to be recoated more often, wood finishes which generally hold up longer than oils but may require sanding before recoating, and varnishes which generally last the longest but you have to apply a lot of coats to start off. Most of these coatings have an amber color which I think gives the mahogany a warm, rich color and provides the best UV protection. For a clear finish that captures the original color of the wood, take a look at TotalBoat Halcyon Marine Varnish.

Q: We are getting ready to refinish some expensive teak benches with metal supports and side rails. Does the Total Boat two part teak cleaner have an adverse effect on the metal

2 Answers

A: The Cleaner is chemically active, so it would potentially mar the finish on the metal. If the Cleaner is removed quickly, it probably would not harm the metal (I would wipe the metal a couple of times with a damp rag to ensure removal of any Cleaner). The shorter the Cleaner is in contact with the metal, the better. If you can test on a spot on the metal which is out of sight, that would be the best.

Q: I have a Mad River Kevlar canoe which has teak wood railing & trim. I intend to carry the canoe on top of the canoe rack of my truck camper... full time, exposed to the sun & rain. Is this Total Boat Teak Cleaner what I need to coat the teak wood to protect the wood or should I coat the teak wood with penetrating epoxy instead. Unfortunately, I do not have a garage or car port to park the truck under. I would appreciate any suggestions. U.S. Army, Ret. TX

A: Hi Richard, This product is a 2 part cleaner used for deep cleaning badly weathered teak. It does not provide any protection to the wood. But it is a good first step in preparing the wood to be finished. Penetrating epoxy would help. But most epoxies do not have any UV protection. So, they'll eventually break down and turn cloudy or peel if not over coated. Plus, once they fail, they're almost impossible to strip from the wood. I would deep clean the wood with this cleaner, sand it smooth and apply a teak sealer/protectant. Depending on what your preference is for appearance, you can varnish it or use a sealer like SEMCO's Teak Sealer once a year. If you mix SEMCO's ""Cleartone"" and ""Natural"" sealers 50/50 it will look like freshly sanded teak and should hold up for about a year before needing another coat. It's very simple to apply, absorbs into the wood and shouldn't take more than 15 minutes to apply to your rail.

Q: TB Teak Cleaner left significant orange stains on my gelcoat unlike other 2 part teak cleaners I have used. What should I use to remove the stains? Also, the orange color just kept coming out of the teak. I would rinse the heck out of it, come back ten minutes later, hit it with the hose and more orange would come out. This went on several more times. Is this normal, because other products I've used haven't done this?

1 Answer

A: The orange color could be from whatever finish was on the teak that the cleaner is loosening up, or it could be the oils and resins in the teak being removed. To clean up the orange on the deck, mix some boat soap and bleach with water and wash the area well. That should clean it up.

Q: I'd like to use the product on teak handrails on a painted cabin top. The handrails are not removable. Will the product damage the paint? Paint is a polyurethane eggshell finish with non-skid added.

A: It will soften the paint if dripped on or left on for a period of time. If possible, lay plastic sheeting over your cap rail to protect it. I have not had that happen to me but each paint is different.

Q: I have been working on teak for years using the Te-Ka two part cleaner. I have tried many other cleaners but none of them work as well. How does this compare to Te-Ka

A: I've never used te-ka but this stuff is excellent if the directions are followed exactly. Have a hose immediately available for rinsing during the process and wear gloves, eye, and clothing protection as the chemicals are quite strong. - Logan
