Product Details

Multi-purpose TotalBoat Special Brushing Thinner 100 improves the flow for solvent-based TotalBoat paints and primers applied by brush or roller. Formulated especially for use with TotalBoat Wet Edge topside paint, TotalGold, TotalTread non-skid paint, and others.

Note: Use Epoxy Primer Thinner 200 with TotalProtect & Aluminum Boat Barrier Coat Primers. Do not use Brushing Thinner 100 with these 2 primers.

Due to its slower drying properties, Thinner 100 improves flow and helps preserve the wet edge, extending the working time in warm weather conditions (over 75°F) when applying TotalBoat Topside Primer or TotalBilge paint by brush or roller.

After painting, use Special Brushing Thinner 100 to clean painting tools and equipment quickly and easily.

Available in Quart and Gallon sizes.

Info & Guides
THINNING NOTES: TotalBoat Spray Thinner 101 can be substituted for Special Brushing Thinner 100 in cool-weather applications, below 60°F, to promote excellent flow, wet edge properties, and faster dry times. In addition, Spray Thinner 101 is the recomended thinner for spray application of most TotalBoat one-part finishes.

Used this to thin both for brushing and HVLP. Worked great for the latter, but even more brilliant for brushing Lust.

Great brush cleaner and thinner

I used Brushing thinner 100 for thinning varnish, Gleam 2.0, And for cleaning brushes after. It was a great thinner and worked well with inaccurate ""eye"" measuring. As a brush cleaner I was really amazed how quick it worked compared to mineral spirits. The brushed came out real clean, ready for the next job.

Great priduct

I followed directions to a tee also sanded off old bottom paint which was 4 coats thick. yes, that sucked but it was well worth it. 1 gal covered 2 coats on a 28 ft sportcraft I also used the brush thinner and made it easy to apply with a roller!!

Worked perfectly with the Lust varnish

We were told not to thin the last coat or it wouldn't have full shine. We worked in an environment where we needed the flow and time the thinner affords to get the swim deck restored. Fortunately, the thinner didn't take anything at all away fromt he beautiful gloss coat of the Lust finish

Worked as expected in thinning my Wet Edge Top Coat

Works great, but not necessarily needed for wipe down in between layers when you can use Denatured Alcohol instead.

Shipping Arrival

I haven't used this product yet. However, even though arrows were placed on the outside of the shipping box indicating what side should face up. UPS doesn't always follow those stickers. A small bit of the thinner had leaked. Not much, but could definitely smell it.

Overpriced and questionable value

I went with the recommendations but don't think it's any better than off the shelf mineral spirits.

My trouble started with ordering your paint for the bilge of my boat. The bilge of my boat is in fiber glass but the annexed lazaretto which had to be completely rebuilt and painted, is of wood. The bilge paint did not cure when applied on wood. I called your office and talked to Nick. He told me I had to remove the paint from all the wood (a three day job) and repaint it with the same paint adding 10 % of Thinner 100. I proceeded to give him my credit card etc etc and I was promised I would get the product in the next 2 days. The product arrived 2 weeks later. I was told you had run out of it. By the time the product arrived the paint had dried almost completely so I decided not to follow Nick instructions. The painting of the fiberglass portion presented no problem. The moral of this story is: 1. I strongly suggest to caution users in painting over wood with this bilge paint. It does not seem to be good for wood even if 10% of the thinner is added. 2. I also strongly suggest to instruct your people that when a promise is made to a client it must be kept, otherwise the organization and its products loose the confidence of people.

Buy it by the gallon. It has lots of uses, especially if you read and follow the suggestions on the side of other Total Boat products...(Wet Edge, Lust etc.) There is not one Total Boat product that has turned out to be less than I expected. Great Stuff, Sure E nough!

Was not purposeful for my application

This product is not useful when applying varnish to a vertical surface ie mast or transom. In my case the thinner only caused the varnish to run and drip more. I would have done better with a thickener. A waste of money for me!

This was recommended to go with the Total Boat Wet Edge topside paint and I'm so glad I purchased it! Works great and does exactly what its supposed to do. Sure thinner is thinner but in the use case of painting boats I'd go with this since its specifically formulated for use with boat paints!

Q: can you use the brushing 100 to thin wet edge paint to Spray with at 10 to 20 % to thin paint for spraying.

A: No, the paint won't cure properly and is likely to sag or wrinkle.. You should use the 101 spraying thinner or Xylene.

A: Hey Chris, Thank you for reaching out. I would only thin what you are using at the time. For Rolling we recommend 5%-10% Depending on conditions

Q: Can use this to thin 2 part automotive epoxy primer (DTM) so I can roll vs spray?

1 Answer

A: I would not attempt to spray two-part epoxy. I have used total boat 100 thinner for several brands of boat paint with excellent results, but thinning epoxy to the viscosity you can spray is risky business.

Q: I am buying wed edge and primer for small dinghy.. can I use acetone or paint thinner prior to rolling/tipping? thanks. Dave

1 Answer

A: I recommend TB 100 for thinning the paint. It is a good idea to wipe down the surface with dewaxer, acetone, or denatured alcohol prior to sanding so you don't grind wax or contaminants into the substrate. TB100 or denatured alcohol would be the best choice to clean the surface after sanding to pick up the dust before you paint.

Q: How does this differ from acetone? Would both of these give me the same results?

1 Answer

A: Thinner 100 is mostly a high flash naphtha, Acetone is different and will not work.
