Product Details

TotalBoat Wood Sealer fills and seals wood grain to create a level surface for more consistent finishes. This clear, wood conditioner prevents varnish from being absorbed into the wood, so finish coats build up faster. Use it to seal plywood and oily woods like teak to prevent finish cracking and checking.

Unlike other marine wood sealers, it features UV-inhibiting filters so finishes are protected right down to the wood. Its fast-drying formula doesn't require sanding between coats. TotalBoat Wood Sealer is compatible with all 1-part varnishes.

Available in Quart and Gallon sizes.

Info & Guides

NOTE: TotalBoat Wood Sealer is not a finish coating and should be overcoated with 1-part varnish to provide depth, higher gloss, and more complete UV protection. Do not apply 2-part varnishes, 2-part polyurethane paints, or 2-part epoxies over TotalBoat Wood Sealer.

APPLICATION AND USE

Surface Preparation

Bare wood should be clean, dry, and free of grease, oil, or other contaminants. Sand the surface with 220-grit sandpaper in the direction of the grain until completely smooth. Use a vacuum to remove any sanding residue, wipe the surface clean with a lint-free rag dampened with TotalBoat Dewaxer & Surface Prep, and follow immediately by wiping with a clean, dry, lint-free rag.

Application

Before use, stir well—do not shake. TotalBoat Wood Sealer can be brushed, rolled, or sprayed. Apply 2-3 coats, as directed. Oil hardwoods like teak should require only 2 coats, while plywood or porous wood may require 3 coats.

Thinning should not be required, but if desired, use TotalBoat Special Brushing Thinner 100 for brushing/rolling applications, and TotalBoat Spray Thinner 101 for spray applications.

Total Boat Wood Sealer

Recently used this product to seal some solid wood (ash) replacement boat parts. Applied by foam brush outside in sunny weather (70) which caused the finish to dry unevenly. I needed to sand the surfaces smooth with 120 grit. The second coat was a little better when done inside, though I still needed to sand the surfaces smooth a second time with 180 grit. Plan to topcoat with primer and Topside paint.

excellent product

I am replacing a lid on my out door kindling box. It is plywood and I needed a good waterproofing compound. This varnish is excellent. I found it easy to use and after the 3 coats recommended for plywood, the outdoor paint that I applied covered the plywood easily and it looks great. If it works for boats I am sure it will work for my project.

Never do bare wood varnish project with out first applying 3-4 coats of sealer! It seals the wood quickly and easily, no sanding needed and forms a great base for the finish coats of Lust.

Does the job as advertised

No complaints. The company helped guide me Over the phone with the basic procedures and what to do. Everything went as advertised. No problems. It does take time to do stain, seal, then followed by. the final finish product. One needs patience to do this work.

Used the Wood Sealer along with Lust marine varnish to weather proof, rain, sun and high humidity, a new outdoor table. It has been a little over a month and table is looking great. This was the first time I've used this product and I'm very impressed and happy with the results.

First use a success

I just tried this out on a canoe paddle project. It was the first time I have used this wood sealer. Many wood sealers state that they are for indoor use. Obviously, needed one designed for both. I got excellent results with polyurethane finish coat.

Questions

Q: so i started the process of refinishing the teak hand rails on my trawler. i sanded and acetoned and was able to get a first coat of the sealer down, but had to temporarily suspend the project, leaving me with just one coat of sealer (which looked amazing!) being exposed to south florida sun for almost two months. its still holding up, but in a few places the sealer is gone (soaked into the wood?). Any how , to restart the project , do i need to remove the existing sealer or just scuff or can i just put on two new coats and start building the varnish? thanks - seems like a great product so far.

A: I can't speak to your exact product and situation however I've been woodworking with epoxies and polycoats /clearcoats for a long time and if I were you I would scuff it up with 220 grit. make sure any damaged Wood Sealer is removed. And then go ahead with your varnish. I wouldn't worry about making the whole thing bare wood again. The varnish will bond to whatever is underneath it

Q: Can I use TotalBoat Wood Sealer Varnish Primer (before varnish) over new mahogany rails coated with epoxy?

1 Answer

A: Hi Eric. Thank you for reaching out. You could use it over that, but it's really most useful when applied over bare wood. Wood that is already coated with epoxy doesn't really need varnish primer because the surface is no longer porous.

Q: I am replacing mahogany decking on a 1950 Chris Craft. Can this be used over interlux stains?

2 Answers

A: Oil-based stains can be applied before applying TotalBoat Wood Sealer, Lust, or TotalBoat Gleam 2.0 varnishes, but it is extremely important to test for adhesion and compatibility before attempting to do so on the final project. Some stains such as the Minwax® brand work great within their line, but have a tendency to reject other brands of varnish when they're applied over it. Interlux brand wood stains and Circa 1850 stains have yielded good results for customers, but TotalBoat does not recommend any specific wood stains for use with Lust and Gleam 2.0 varnishes. Always follow all directions for the stain product prior to applying TotalBoat Lust or Gleam 2.0 varnish.

Q: How does this compare to a product like Z-Poxy for filling pores?

1 Answer

A: Thanks for reaching out. I am not familiar with Z-Poxy and can't speak to that product, but this product is a varnish primer and not an epoxy. Varnishes are usually polyurethane based and provide quite a bit of UV protection; not so much waterproofing. Varnishes are often used over epoxies for UV protection while the epoxy provides water protection. This varnish primer is essentially a thinned varnish with some other ingredients that will prep wood grain for varnish to go on smoothly with less air bubbles. It wouldn't be a substitute for an epoxy. If you're looking for an epoxy coating to waterproof and seal pores, I would try the High Performance 2:1 Epoxy and follow that up with a varnish if you need UV protection.

Q: Is it ok to use with epiphanes wood varnish on teal exterior wood?

1 Answer

A: This wood sealer has worked well for us so far on both teak and mahogany. We applied two coats of the sealer before beginning the build up of four coats of Epiphanes. We still thinned the first and second coats of the varnish, but adhesion and coverage was better than they had been without using the sealer.
