Product Details

TotalBoat Wood Sealer fills and seals wood grain to create a level surface for more consistent finishes. This clear, wood conditioner prevents varnish from being absorbed into the wood, so finish coats build up faster. Use it to seal plywood and oily woods like teak to prevent finish cracking and checking.

Unlike other marine wood sealers, it features UV-inhibiting filters so finishes are protected right down to the wood. Its fast-drying formula doesn't require sanding between coats. TotalBoat Wood Sealer is compatible with all 1-part varnishes.

Available in Quart and Gallon sizes.

Info & Guides

NOTE: TotalBoat Wood Sealer is not a finish coating and should be overcoated with 1-part varnish to provide depth, higher gloss, and more complete UV protection. Do not apply 2-part varnishes, 2-part polyurethane paints, or 2-part epoxies over TotalBoat Wood Sealer.

APPLICATION AND USE

Surface Preparation

Bare wood should be clean, dry, and free of grease, oil, or other contaminants. Sand the surface with 220-grit sandpaper in the direction of the grain until completely smooth. Use a vacuum to remove any sanding residue, wipe the surface clean with a lint-free rag dampened with TotalBoat Dewaxer & Surface Prep, and follow immediately by wiping with a clean, dry, lint-free rag.

Application

Before use, stir well—do not shake. TotalBoat Wood Sealer can be brushed, rolled, or sprayed. Apply 2-3 coats, as directed. Oil hardwoods like teak should require only 2 coats, while plywood or porous wood may require 3 coats.

Thinning should not be required, but if desired, use TotalBoat Special Brushing Thinner 100 for brushing/rolling applications, and TotalBoat Spray Thinner 101 for spray applications.

Dries fast

I have finally found a fast drying wood sealer that dries hard and raises the grain of the wood for the initial sealing and sanding before top coating either with varnish or paint. Very happy with this product.

I have not used this product yet

However I expect it to be excellent just as every other total boat product I have used. I have had my 1965 CC constellation for 9 years now so my experience with total boat stuff is starting to be extensive. I am pleased with everything about these products from the quality to the speed they are shipped. I go to to Total Boat first now to find what I need

Need to sell in larger size. Ended up purchasing an additional 3 quarts due to I was coating cedar which readily absorbed it.

Yes. I will use this product again

I used this as a base coat sealer after staining and under Total Boat Lust Varnish. Works great and very forgiving. Dries fast for easy re-coat. It colors the wood a little but not objectionable.

I like this product

I used when refinishing my garage doors, which are vertical grain Douglas Fir. I stripped the old polyurethane finish and used this as the first coats to a new finish. I really like that no sanding is required between coats.

This is good stuff

Over the winter I had some spots that moisture got in under my varnish. I scraped the area , did a little sanding, and applied the primer sealer in those areas. Put some varnish over the top and it is hard to tell that it had been repaired.

Test in an inconspicuous area before using.

Used this on teak toe rails before varnishing with Lust. It dried quickly and I was able to put on two coats in an afternoon. It is very thin and runny - be very careful of drips! It also darkened the wood more than I expected. One area I had to scrape off and re-do because minor discoloration was exaggerated by the sealer. Test before using!

Review

My post from sailboat owners.com forum: I recently used Total Boat Wood Sealer Varnish Primer on solid teak that had been sanded down to bare wood. Applied 3 coats using an HVLP gun with 1.4 tip, un-thinned. Laid down beautifully with no sanding, less than an hour between coats. Dried with a really hard finish.

Used primer on raw wood. Applied two coats with a light sanding after the first coat. Finished with Gleam varnish. No sanding needed between varnish coats. I am very happy with the Primer and the Varnish.

High quality sealer

I used two coats on my exterior door. I applied it flat with a foam brush, sanding after each coat, with glass like results. I recommend doing this outdoors, as the smell permeated the entire house for a day.

Great sealer before Total Boat Halcyon Varnish

Great sealer before using Total Boat Halcyon Varnish. I put 2 coats of Total Boat Wood Sealer on without sanding in 55 degrees this winter in one day. Looks great...

So So product

It seems more like a varnish than a wood sealer. It has a strong odor so ventilation is needed. After 2 coats it ended up looking like a glossy varnish, so if you are using on wood that will not have a gloss topcoat don't use. Too early to know about longevity, but I don't think I would buy again

Early, but I like it so far

I've only used this twice so far, but I like the very quick drying, and that it has UV blockers built in. I have a suspicion that this is just thinned down Lust varnish, or something similar, but who cares it allows you to seal your wood in three coats on the same day, wait 24 hours, sand, and start applying varnish.

Three coats as a sealer before Lust. Looks so good I cut back on varnish coats, but it is thin and runs easily, you have to be careful.

Super Sealer

I purchased this sealer for a Sapele exterior door project. Absolutely delighted at the medium-low volume solids, warm light maple syrup color tone that's quite subtle, and gloss to bring out the depth of the wood grain. It sands and powders quite nicely. Absolutely delighted with the way it flows, and yet dries much quicker than some other varnishes. Could not be happier with the result.

Works, but probably just poly mixed with thinner/penetrol

Honestly I was expecting more. It's extremely thin, feels like polyurethane mixed with thinner and a drop of penetrol at a higher price. I could have made it myself cheaper. For a beginner this would be a good product. The foam brushes and single plastic glove - for a quart of sealer - seems kind of silly.

Great Product!!

I love this stuff! I'm using it for woodworking rather than boats. The water resistance is excellent, it dries quickly to a tough surface, it adheres well, sands well, and looks good. It will take an oil-based tint. I've tried many products looking for something with all of these qualities and this one is really exceptional.
