Product Details

TotalBoat Wood Sealer fills and seals wood grain to create a level surface for more consistent finishes. This clear, wood conditioner prevents varnish from being absorbed into the wood, so finish coats build up faster. Use it to seal plywood and oily woods like teak to prevent finish cracking and checking.

Unlike other marine wood sealers, it features UV-inhibiting filters so finishes are protected right down to the wood. Its fast-drying formula doesn't require sanding between coats. TotalBoat Wood Sealer is compatible with all 1-part varnishes.

Available in Quart and Gallon sizes.

Info & Guides

NOTE: TotalBoat Wood Sealer is not a finish coating and should be overcoated with 1-part varnish to provide depth, higher gloss, and more complete UV protection. Do not apply 2-part varnishes, 2-part polyurethane paints, or 2-part epoxies over TotalBoat Wood Sealer.

APPLICATION AND USE

Surface Preparation

Bare wood should be clean, dry, and free of grease, oil, or other contaminants. Sand the surface with 220-grit sandpaper in the direction of the grain until completely smooth. Use a vacuum to remove any sanding residue, wipe the surface clean with a lint-free rag dampened with TotalBoat Dewaxer & Surface Prep, and follow immediately by wiping with a clean, dry, lint-free rag.

Application

Before use, stir well—do not shake. TotalBoat Wood Sealer can be brushed, rolled, or sprayed. Apply 2-3 coats, as directed. Oil hardwoods like teak should require only 2 coats, while plywood or porous wood may require 3 coats.

Thinning should not be required, but if desired, use TotalBoat Special Brushing Thinner 100 for brushing/rolling applications, and TotalBoat Spray Thinner 101 for spray applications.

Time will tell

Project - 1966 Ted Hood sailboat. Exterior cabintop. Previous varnish (Epifanes) did not hold up well after 5 seasons (With annual topping coats) and started lifting in a number of locations. New approach was to use this sealer before varnishing. From an application standpoint, I liked with sealers very much. It appeared to do a nice job saturating the stained mahogany...which will be coated with Total Boat Halcyon varnish. The real answer will come in a few years, if this combination is still going strong protecting the wood.

Great Stuff

Quick response and great packaging. Thought the metal safety clips on the container was a great idea during shipping. The primer applied very easily and looks great. The consistency of the primer was perfect.

Save yourself some sanding...unless you like sanding.

Used this on some marine plywood, after staining, and before varnish. Two coats on the surface, three on the plywood edges. Solid wood trim pieces got two coats. You don't have to sand between coats, and it dries within a couple hours (unless the temps are below 60 degrees, then it took longer). After the last coat of sealer, you wait 24 hrs, give the parts a light sanding, and then you're ready for varnish. First coat of varnish looks like the 4th or 5th.... So, generally liked the stuff, except for the smell. This is one smelly product! I use an organic vapor mask, and after a few days of working, the smell permeated through the mask. Had to get more filters! I'd give the product 5 stars if it didn't smell so bad! But, overall it saved time (less coats of varnish), and money (cheaper than varnish).
