Product Details

Sika 209D primer is used to prime painted surfaces and plastic substrates prior to bonding with Sikaflex adhesives. This low viscosity, black pigmented liquid dries when exposed to the air (specifically, reaction with atmospheric moisture). Formerly known as Sika 209N. 1/2 pint.

Areas of Application

Sika Primer-209D is suitable for application to the following substrates:

  • Plastics Acrylic (PMMA)
  • Polycarbonate ABS, etc.
  • Paints Acrylics
  • Alkyds/melamins

Material Expired--JD may have a quality problem

I ordered the Sika Primer 209D on March 12th and it was shipped on the 13th. When it arrived I didn't notice that the ""Best Before' date was 1/2023. In fact, I didn't realize it until after I had installed my windows. Now I have two more windows and my 209D as well as my 206 G+P is expired. The question I don't have an answer for is what the impact to the qualify of my window installation is.

    Terrible Service

Worst company to work with on shipping. Called and ordered one small simple IMPORTANT item, the person taking my order on Oct 11 advised I would have this 4-5 days. Here we are Oct 20 and I still don't have it. Also ensured me the package was shipping UPS, then found out they transferred it to USPS, which totally explains why I don't have it and will most likely never see it. After speaking with others, it is clear this company does not deliver as promised most of the time and they apparently lie to customers? If you have an option to get your item somewhere else, I Highly suggest doing that!

    Disappointed with Jamestown

I purchased this 209 Primer and it was shipped to me on 5/16/17, it expires at the end of July. It is close to $90 a bottle and I used very little of it. How about Sika providing smaller amounts, or Jamestown and other distributors prorating the price depending on shelf life? It has a 9 month shelf life, but, I was down to 2.5 months when I got it.

WAY too much for a boat owner to do two windows

Product seemed fine but as with the activator, there was WAY too much. I had two windows to do on my boat. I think the can I paid over $50 for could have done a couple hundred at least. Plus, the same cost and amount of overrun on the activator made this almost a $200 project to rebed two deadlight windows on a sailboat. Ridiculous. Plus, one of them came with a ""best used by date"" that was only 45 days away. Kind of makes a tube of silicone look a lot better.

Had good success in fitting hatch lens

The manufacturer has a good write up on how to use this product. It worked as advertised with no leaks now for 4 years. My only complaint is that the 1 part primer is expensive and has a short shelf life, so you use what you need and throw the rest away. In my case, the two Bomar hatches I fixed used about 5% of the primer so most of it was discarded.

Great Stuff for new hatch replacement

Great stuff however it has a shelf life and the volumn is all or nothing.... Too much for small jobs yet necessary for the installation process.

    Questions

Q: Does product have traceability; MFR Certs w/DOM & DOE / Test Reports? What is materials current Shelf Life?

    1 Answer

A: I do not recall if mine came with certs or not.  It was not an issue for my application.  However, I just checked the package itself and it does have a batch number on it so, theoretically, it does have traceability.   As for the DOM & DOE test results, I don't recall...   I believe it has a six month self life from date of packaging, but I have bought this product in the past from another vendor and when it arrived, there was only about 45 days to expiration.   Hope this helps. Q: I don't see the small __quote__stick__quote__ style 209 listed. Do you still carry that?

    1 Answer

A: If you are looking for what's in the attached picture, it's not a stick. More like a little aluminum bottle.

Q: do you have to use 209d when bonding acrylic windows to wood and epoxy ?

A: Frankly I have no clue. I used this product to bond a plexiglas canopy to my aircraft's 2024 alloy aluminum structure. I didn't attempt the application you describe, but it's working great on my aircraft. Good luck!

Q: open time on the 209D primer ?

    2 Answers

A: I'm not sure if I am answering the question being asked, but here goes: By __quote__open time__quote__ I assume you mean the working time before the solvents evaporate and the application swab starts to drag as the primer dries. I would describe it as very fast - one pass only and have everything masked off and ready to go before you start. This was under my particular conditions or temperature and humidity; other conditions may yield longer working times. I used this as part of the process of adhering new ports to my sailboat and it worked beautifully. I used only Sika adhesive and primer - no mechanical fastenings. I hope this helps. Dave
