Product Details

Micron CSC is a great multi-season ablative bottom paint with a copper-copolymer formula that provides controlled release of antifouling biocides at the paint surface.

Drying times depend on ambient temperatures, but ranges between 1-2 hours for touch dry and 16 hours for immersion. At least 2 coats recommended for proper application on bare fiberglass, bare wood, steel, and previously painted surfaces in good condition.

The longevity of the coating depends on the amount of paint applied. CSC antifouling paint retains its effectiveness even when the boat is removed from the water for extended periods (winter storage, for example). To reactivate come springtime, use a stiff brush or power wash lightly. Suitable for sailboats and power boats.

Available in Black, Blue, Green, Red, and Shark White colors in Quart and Gallon sizes. Dark Blue is available in Gallon size only.

I would use this product

Key to success was using a 1/8"" foam epoxy roller. Do not over load the roller. Accomplished two coats on the hull of a 15 foot Boston whaler. I cut the roller in half. The consistency of the paint is somewhat gloppy if that makes sense. It does like to drip off the roller.

Product great but damaged

Paint arrived without any obvious signs of damage to the outer package. Upon opening the package the can looked like it had been thrown from a moving vehicle. Dented to the point it would barely stand upright and leaking. Called about the situation but was only offered an empty can to put the paint in. I expected a little more considering the cost if this product. I did not pursue the issue since the job was time critical. I hope this product was not sent from the warehouse in this condition. Great product that I have used for years on commercial fishing boats just very disappointed in condition at receipt and minimal customer service response.

Works well in multiple coats

I used this bottom paint on a 16 foot sailboat that sits at a mooring in the water all summer. I can finish the whole bottom with a skeg and centerboard with just one quart, if thinned out a bit. Because it's so expensive, I have only used one quart per year. Every year, I rough up and clean the old paint with a scotch brite pad, and apply the new coat over the old one. Now that I have 3 years of buildup, this seems to keep the slime buildup off the hull a lot better. This paint stinks. Definitely use a respirator when applying.

MY 31' Tiara's bottom was stripped and painted with black AwlGrip in 2005. That application lasted about five years without touch up. Then minor work was required yearly, mainly involving pinholes and small areas. Since I can't buy AwlGrip in quarts I went with CSC over 2000E barrier coat for touch up. I don't know if this is the method for professional shipyards, but it works for me. Fresh water Lake Erie is my boating location.

Works as intended

I have used this product many times over the years, and its always worked well. This year I helped a relative with his new boat. We had it delivered with no bottom paint. I started with cleaning the hull bottom with interlux 202. Once cleaned we painted with no sand primer. Once dry (finger imprint in paint) we started with Micron csc black. This was then over coated with micron csc blue. We will now have a boat that we can relaunch for a few years without repainting. If the black starts showing through then we will know for sure we need to repaint.

Goes on Easy

I have yet to see how the paint performs for antifouling, but it was a nice product to work with. The bottom of my boat soaked up the first coat pretty well, and the second coat covered too but did not leave a uniform finish. For the areas where a 3rd coat was applied finish was perfectly uniform. I think my boat just needed it really bad. Drys quick so easier to trim out with a brush first and roll into those areas. Keep your brushes and rollers moist or in aluminum foil if not using.

Basic paint which is good for in and out boats or one year service periods. When left in the water for periods of six months, it has poor grass and slime protection. Totally failed after 3 years with significant fowling.

Great Bottom Paint

Product went on great, made the boat really look good! I was just putting a coat over the existing paint that was already on the boat. If you are concerned about coverage and evenness you might want to apply two coats as one coat does show evidence of thinner coatings and thicker coatings if using a roller. Everywhere I brushed it on shows even coverage. Prior to painting I washed and lightly scrubbed the bottom and found the dust from this product to be extremely messy. Make sure you wear protective clothing, goggles, hat, respirator, etc.....I had the dust in my hair, on my skin, and all over my cloths. Protective gear is a must!!! The paint can says to wear protective gear as well, so they definitely warn you.

No more scum line..no bottom growth or barnacles..increased water slippage(fast and increased fuel savings).I touch up the scum line every other year. The boat is on a mooring for the season so what a relief to not have to bottom paint every year.My friends are converting you should too.

Good material for the right mind set.

I'm a Cabinetmaker for 24 yrs. If you want to paint your bottom once every 3-4 yrs. pending on use, then this product works. Use a red mohair roller to keep splatter down to 0% roll slowly. Follow all directions for this product. Understand that weather conditions play a hug role in your satisfaction. Call the manufacture for unanswered questions. My boat is trailered and I see no fault in its first season (2010). This material does not shine, it does not claim to shine. Build up the coats the first time as directed and you too will be pleased.

Great paint but prep is everything

This paint is great but you REALLY need to take your time and prep your boat properly if you want the great looks and long lasting performance. 1) You really need to start from bare gel coat so if your bottom has a lot of caked on old peeling hard paint, you need to have it soda basted off. See a professional. If you have a bare bottom, make SURE you get all the mold release wax OFF!! you need to sand the bottom to rough it up and wipe with the suggested solvent to get all the wax/oils off the hull. (is your bottom paint peeling off in patches?...whomever painted it did not prep the bottom as mentioned above) 2) move the boat OUT OF THE SUN, best if indoors on a hard surface. (It is much easier to paint, the paint will not dry(cure) too fast) 3) apply 4-5 coats of epoxy barrier coat. (no I am not kidding) Apply each coat after the previous coat is tacky. This stuff is awesome and will save you hull from blistering or water absorption and is nearly bulletproof. You will do this once in a boats life and it will extend the life of the bottom and prevent blistering. 4) apply at least 3 coats oc ablative micon CSC. MIX THE PAINT OFTEN, the active stuff settles out. Try and get the first coat on when the last coat of barrier coat is still a little tacky. Some folks prefer to put a different color bottom paint for a first coat (say red) then paint your preferred color on top of that. When you see red, it is time to put another coat of your preferred color on. I don't care to do that but it is a popular thing to do nowadays. After all this you bottom worries are really over. You just have to touch up or re-coat with a single coat every other year (or when you see red). You will never have a build up and there is no growth, it looks great and most importantly your bottom is nearly bullet proof and impervious to seawater and it will never be absorbed by the gel-coat. Yes, you can just slap this over old hard paint but, it will look like you did just that, will not protect your bottom against water absorption and will peel if you don't prep right. (been there done that!) Do it right ONCE and you will be happy for the life of your boat. If it is too much work hire a GOOD boatyard to do it and it will be well worth the money. (Let them do the ugly stuff the first time, and you can touch it up every other year after) Bottom painting is a pain and a messy job but if done right it looks great, lasts and really protects.

CSC +/-

Work fast: it splatters & thickens quickly. Work slow: it thickens to mud, so lightly dilute frequently. Apply to roller with an old sqeeze ketchup/mustard bottle to avoid evaporatitive ($$$$)thickening in paint can/tray. When dry it rubs off like chaulk - keep the dog at home! Easy to apply and it fills small cracks etc. Minimize exposed skin, wear goggles. Wax top sides first (if possible). Waxing and A/F all need warm weather preferrably over 70 F for a few hours while applying. VC-17 gives a slightly faster bottom in fresh water but can not be applied over CSC. Power Wash-Balded CSC can be touched-up in spring after a good base is built up (3 of 9 seasons would get dbl coats, then touch ups on off years) ****Power wash at haul-out YOURSELF or closely supervise attendant - make sure only growth washed off and nozzzle does not dwell or you'll need 2+ coats every spring!$$$$$ ****Must be completely stripped (power wash, sand, rinsed before any other A/F can be used! I tried the rudder and gave up on the haul. It's really time consuming & expensive to remove completely for VC17. The waterline and leading edges must be recoated every year. Bronze VC17 is faster, looks better especially at the waterline/dockside. I suspect ablative paints (dissolve into water - wearing off) are less green-friendly than a VC-17 which is a permanent but must be applied annually. On my boat it is 4-5 qts of CSC every 3 years vs 1 qt of VC 17 annually.

Not Impressed!

All the great reviews are what made me go with this product, but... I restored an old boat and replaced probably 90% of the wood. I painted the hull with this product in the blue color. It turns chalky and lightens substantially in color. The upper sides are a beautiful, shiny mahogany while the bottom is a chalky, drab, blue. I'm not impressed...especially for the price.

Q: Hello I'm currently having the bottom done on our power cat It has sea hawk cucote on her now, considering micron csc. Have pressure washed and sanded will micron csc be ok ? Also any slime preventive ideas for waterline

2 Answers

A: I have been using Micron CSC both on my 30' sailboat and 35 knot capable center console in brackish water mid Chesapeake Bay. I keep the sailboat in water 3 years or so at at time and I would say the antifouling properties are good for a solid 1 1/2 years. It seems like moss, or slime, gradually builds up and then barnacles start attaching. I control that by wiping down the hull (with scuba) with a 3M pad, or sometimes just with work gloves. It seems the teflon component really does help with getting organisms to release at that point. The boat sits in mud on really low tides, stripping bottom paint off there, so it is easy to guage effectiveness of the bottom paint. As far as being ablative preventing buildup, I would say not so much. I still fair remaining bottom paint with 60 grit before spring launch. Michael

A: According to the tech sheet posted on the web page, one gallon covers 439.7 square feet, however that does not account for loss. Its' safe to say that one gallon will get you almost two coats. The paint will keep if stored properly so it would be more economical to buy it by the gallon.

Q: will this product work on wood boats

3 Answers

A: David - Micron CSC works well on wooden boats, at least on two Beetle Cat bottoms which have been repainted annually for many years. Attention though to avoid overpainting and/or too little preparation before applying new coats. Like all copper-infused bottom paints, too much paint can cake and chip away, leaving a rough surface. My practice (not Micron's recommendation) was to apply just one coat each spring, which would ablate down to almost bare wood by fall. Both boats have proven fast in competition. Hope this helps. Be well.
