Product Details

TotalBoat Penetrating Epoxy is a low-viscosity wood rot restoration and repair solution that seals deeper & cures stronger than industry-leading penetrating epoxies. It has no VOCs, no odor & is 100% waterproof once cured.

This 2:1 system is ideal for restoring rotten or damaged wood, or sealing new wood for lasting protection against humidity, salt, mold & mildew. It works by gluing cellulose (wood) fibers back together, sealing a bare, porous wood surface from the inside out. Double the penetrating power by mixing acetone with the epoxy resin solution in equal volume. Easy to apply by brush, roller, or inject via syringe. Surfaces may be painted or varnished after light sanding.

Choose from Traditional (65-90 F) or Cold Weather (40-65 F) formulas in Pint, Quart, 1/2 Gallon, Gallon, & 3-Gallon kits.

Info & Guides

NO VOCS, NO SMELL.

Cleanup is easy. Wear latex gloves, wash off with soap and water. No solvents required.

APPLICATION NOTE: The wood must be bare and unfinished. Also, TotalBoat Penetrating Epoxy will not penetrate and level well when applied over some stains. Always test an area first. DO NOT USE on top of Minwax oil-based stains.

TotalBoat Cold Weather Penetrating Epoxy is perfect for use during the colder seasons. Compared to our traditional TotalBoat Penetrating Epoxy, our Cold Weather formula offers similar performance characteristics, but cures completely and reliably in cooler temperatures. Its tack-free properties also allow you to sand sooner.

WARNING: TotalBoat Cold Weather Penetrating Epoxy should not be used as a fast-cure epoxy in warmer temperature conditions because doing so can be unsafe and result in premature exotherm, brittleness, and improper curing.

Application Temperature Ranges:

  • Traditional formula - 65-90°F
  • Cold Weather formula - 40-65°F

I'm not sure I would use this prior to varnishing.

I followed all the directions, suggestions and tips but found that when the penetrating epoxy had cured, i washed it, dried it, sanded with 320 in preparation for varnish,,, The epoxy left my piece splotchy (for lack of a better description). This was used on red mahogany. The 1st piece (of 2 pieces) of this project i used only varnish, 5 coats ,sanding lightly in between, and it turned out to a very fine finish, no clouds or splotchy patches, practically perfect. I decided for the 2nd piece I was going for a more weather resistant finish when I decided to use the penetrating epoxy step prior to varnish on the 2nd piece. Just using the epoxy and no varnish left me with a final finish that was too glassy and less than smooth. When I tried sanding that..... it left me with the cloudiness and splotchiness. It's possible i did not do this correctly,,,but having followed all the instructions provided, which I read numerous times, I fail to see what I missed. I'm at a loss in my attempt to add the epoxy prior to varnishing.

This stuff is miraculous

I use it constantly in my cabinetry projects using reclaimed wood, ... I use it in restoring wooden outside furniture, ... we are using it as a top-coat on replacement horse staff floors. If I want something to last 100 years, I use it. It is easy to work with, has no odor, and achieves miraculous results. Want to make a 12 foot trestle table with exposed bark on the sides? Use it. Let your imagination roam ... and use it

I use this on all of my epoxy projects. It is a very easy to mix and apply. It is a lot thinner that the resin and hardener so it brushes on very easy. It will soak in deep to the wood fibers and seals against air bubbles in your pour.

Easy to apply and cures well

I used this on my sailboat's toe rail and on a plywood seat. In both cases I stripped the wood first. Then varnished the toerail with Halcyon Amber, or painted the plywood with bilge paint. Happy with both scenarios. I got the pumps so I can use them easily as needed.

I read the directions carefully. I watched a video. Nonetheless, it didn't work as I had hoped. First, after about 15 minutes the mixed product (Part A and B) started to heat up. It even smoked and the cup became too hot to hold. Second, shortly after application the product started to bubble on the wood finish.

Works well. Hardener leaked a little in transport.

Non-marine application, but very effective as a penetrative coating. Label of hardener was illegible upon opening package, due to slightly leaking. Hardener is about as non-viscous as water, or even thinner. But overall I am satisfied.

I needed epoxy for several small jobs, so I ordered a gallon and got free shipping -- can't beat that. It's good to have some on hand, and the two components keep well in storage, so I have some left over for anything else that pops up. Linda

We installed a 3 inch thick redwood slab for a bar top, put two coats on and it looks fantastic. The product brought out all the wood grains and colors. It has the shiny coat that you can slide a beer across. Thank you and keep up the good work on this product!

Seemed to work well - excellent customer service. Had a very small problem with my order and Jamestown solved it instantly. I had the replacement the next day. Epoxy worked well, get the syringes too, great buy and they work nicely together. Be sure to wear eye and hand protection, the epoxy can squirt easily and if it got in your eye it would be a bad day.

This works amazingly well.

I used this product to repair water damage to an older travel trailer that had a leaking roof. Some of the wood structure was softened and weak from water damage. I used this product to revive the integrity of the wood, and protect all the new material I replaced. I used a piece of the wood I removed as a test sample and I was impressed how far the epoxy penetrated, and how much stronger the wood was after treating it with the epoxy.

Didn't use it in a marine application. Due to excessive shading there were two bottom logs on a log cabin deteriorating on the outside to a depth of several inches. I used this product, thinned, two coats, and those logs are stabilized and solid. It works.

Yes would buy again

I put on inside floor of wood drift boat, seat tops and bow shelf. Even though thinned I apparently put too thick of coat. The epoxy spanned the wheathered checking but left ridges and did not provide a smooth coating. I varnished over the floor and then installed the walking floor because most was covered I choose not strip the bottom floor. I did scrape the seat tops and bow shelf. A lot of work. I then used the sealer and varnish for a better look. The gunnels were also done with sealer and varnish.

good way to solidify punky wood

Restoring wood members that are only partially punky helps reduce the removal of old growth wood. Using this penetrating epoxy in conjunction with the Total Boat fairing compound works great. I go at it in 1 go, a couple coats of the penetrating and then the fairing compound. I find no need to wait for a cure on the penetrating as they seem to be compatible.

I used penetrating epoxy for a base coat on reclaimed wood for a bathroom vanity; using some old pt wood and some not. The epoxy puddled in some spots and I wish I had wiped it before it dried so there would have been less sanding. I finished the vanity with four coats of spar urethane.

Works great

You could actually see it bubbling where it was soaking into the wood. I used it to seal a plank that I was using to make a jack plate. How ever the problem I had was it came with 2 stir stick and 2 plastic measuring cups which was great. The problem was there is nowhere in the instructions that this product would melt the measuring cup in 10 minutes and it made a absolute mess on my outdoor patio table.

The kit was super easy to mix, it came with a couple filters, mixing buckets, and stir sticks. It spread further than I expected, I thought I'd need two kits or a larger one but the quart kit was plenty for a garden potting bench project. It took longer than I expected to cure, but it was super cold and humid in my shop so not totally surprising.

Q: Once Totalboat Penetrating Epoxy is fully cured, will West System epoxy provide an adequate bond to the Totalboat repaired area. I intend to first use Totalboat Penetrating resin in a boat transom that has been drilled with 3/8 holes 1inch apart followed by injecting mayonnaise consistency thickened West System. I already have a large quantity of West System products. The transom has been drying for 16 months but a section will be cut open to verify conditions.

A: You can go over Totalboat Penetrating epoxy with West System. Make sure it is fully cured, wash with warm water and a scotchbrite pad, then sand with 220 grit.

Q: Can Total Boat Penetrating Epoxy be used with 30 year old pressure treated wood on the end grain of some 2 x 6 deck boards? This is by no means green wet with arsenic wood. I can get it pretty dry by picking out most of the rot and drying it with a heat gun. Would then wood fill end of boards and cap with the decorative 2 x 4cap. LET ME KNOW. Thanks

Q: Hello. I will be attempting a level 3 high power rocket certification launch in the next few months. It is recommended that I fiberglass the concrete form tube to make it extra strong to withstand high speed and aerodymanic forces. I have seem recommendations for using epoxy to go with the fiberglass. Some folks seem to use West, others recommend higher cost epoxies. Has anyone used your epoxies in rocketry? What did they use? Thanks in advance.

1 Answer

A: Penetrating epoxy is not suitable for laminating fiberglass. Take a look at TotalBoat High Performance epoxy or traditional 5:1 epoxy. Epoxy may not be suitable if portions of your lamination are going to be exposed to temperatures over 125 degrees. Xyla Foxlin is a YouTuber that uses TotalBoat. She has done some stuff with rockets.

Q: Is there a video or written instructions on applying this product to rotten stringer/ bulkhead sections of boat about 6 to 8 inches in length with about 3 inches of the wood completely rotted out? I have not removed a section of fiberglass flooring yet to have better access and to be able to work exclusively on the section in question. Thanks for your feedback.

2 Answers

A: If the rot is extensive the best option is to cut out the rotted sections and seal the exposed wood with penetrating epoxy. Then cut new pieces of wood to fit the cutouts and glue them in with thickened epoxy. That will give you a solid foundation to glass over.

A: I would not thin product, works great as is. As for moisture content I think the dryer the better (don't have an actual #). That way the material is stable and will not shrink.   Total Boat product are both reliable and an excellent product.
