No build up

Works better than leading copper antifoul paints No yearly build up from resin based paint. High polish ablative will stay pretty sharp for up to 18 months I've found. I always prime new hulls before applying this but it's thin and stretches a long way. Won't be going back to Copper, using this for three years and I have no complaints.

Dries way too fast.

Need to switch solvent in this bottom paint from mineral spirits to Naptha/Xylene. The current solvent flashes off way too fast. Paint dried in roller pan, skinned over, peeled up and stuck to the roller and then got in the paint job. I was painting in cold weather. I did a side-by-side comparison (same day) between this product and Interlux's Pacifica Plus. In the future, I would rather pay extra and use Interlux Micron CF or Pacifica Plus because it is much nicer to apply. Thank you.

Great Service and Paint was Fantastic

Painted the bottom of a new to me boat that had not been done in a long time. Looks great, we splash in one week. More importantly the service I got on the phone and delivery to Ontario, Canada was superior.

I ordered about $400 worth of product, all arrived damaged. Cans were all dented up, some had dented lids and cans. Customer service said that I couldn't return the product due to shipping laws. Unfortunately I probably wont purchased future products, due to receiving damaged products and no discount for such items.

Bought a gallon in teal for my 79 O'Day 23. Covered my bottom with about 1.5 coats total, and I will say it's the first time I've ever painted a boat bottom. The videos posted were a big help. I'd advise anyone to mix real well before application, I spent a good 5-10 minutes mixing everything with a paint stick, careful not to spill any. Went on easy with a 3/8 nap roller. Excited to see how it does this season on Lake Erie!

Poor coverage and adhesion,

I did not have favorable use of 'white' Krypton last season applied to a Cape Dory 28 Flybridge Cruiser; the paint is very thick and coverage is far less than stated, the 1st gallon only covered 2/3 of the length of the hull, the 2nd gallon completed the 1st coat and maybe 2/3 of a 2nd coat. Once in the water the 2nd cost peeled from the 1st coat in many areas, both coats peeled at the waterline, after hauling last Fall we noticed significant discoloring of the white paint, from last Fall thru today both coats are now significantly peeling in many areas which I'm thinking will require much more bottom prep for this coming seasons bottom paint application than previous paints had required. I've been bottom painting our sail & powerboats since the 80's, using many different products and have never seen this level of performance. However slime and barnacle protection was very favorable in our high growth area in Raritan Bay. I may use another Jamestown project but certainly not Krypton.

Great stuff

I ordered a gallon to bottom paint my 19 foot power boat. The boat sits on a mooring in Manchester, MA harbor and in the past has gotten pretty slimed up over the summer with copper-based bottom paint. This stuff works better - with a couple of bottom scrubbings in the water over the summer and a quick power wash after pulling the boat, it is really clean. I recoated it the 2nd year but think I could have simply touched it up as it is ablative. I have enough left for a third painting should I decide to repaint in the spring.

So Far, So Good

My first time application of Krypton with boat in the water in April has been very good up to this point through 4 months. This is a Lake Erie application with the boat permanently docked at my home in a very high sediment river. The slime at the water line is easily removed with a rag or soft brush. I will report back in late fall to comment on the overall durability and difficulty of cleaning the entire bottom, hopefully with a 5 star rating.

Initially purchased two gallons of red Krypton. First gallon was rose color and needed quite a bit of mixing. Color stayed rose. Had to apply because I had just applied an epoxy barrier coat. Needed to open second gallon. It was pretty well mixed and was bright red. Ordered a third gallon for a second coat. It also was well mixed and bright red. Concerned that the initial gallon may have been bad. Any thoughts?

Questions

Q: Hello I have a 41 Hunter DS and will use the Total Boat Krypton Ablative anti-fouling hull Paint in Blue. I thinking 2 gallons should do it. I am not sure which Anti fouling Ablative Hull paint was used by the previous owner. But from the appearances it looks worn out with bare patches and looks like it was an Ablative Hull paint in Black I am also asking what prep work would you recommend before I apply this paint? I sail out of Safe Harbor Cowesett RI and would like to pick this up your shop. Is that possible? Thank You.

2 Answers

A: Since the previous paint is an unknown, sand it well with 80 grit. 1 gallon will cover 100 square feet with one coat. Bare patches should have at least two coats of paint. Pick up at our facility is not possible, However, shipping is free and it typically only takes a day to ship the paint anywhere in New England. There is $4.99 hazmat fee.

Q: Will Krypton last more than 1 year in brackish water?

1 Answer

A: It's hard to say. Whether it's brackish or salt really makes no difference in longevity. Since it's an ablative paint it really depends on how much water flows across the hull. The more you use it the faster it will wear off. I have heard of people getting more than a season out of single-season paints but you are generally better off recoating it annually.

Q: can you apply krypton bottom paint over freshly painted micron csc copper bottom paint

1 Answer

A: Hey Michael. To apply Krypton over Micron CSC, make sure that the Micron CSC has been cured for at least 7 days. Sand with 80-grit sandpaper, then wipe the surface clean with clean cotton rags dampened with TotalBoat Special Brushing Thinner 100 or TotalBoat Dewaxer & Surface Prep, changing rags frequently, as needed, before applying Krypton antifouling paint.

A: Yes they can but if you look around the boat yard you won't see many props with paint on them. The cavitation tends to wear the paint off.
