Product Details

TotalStrip is a powerful, fast-acting finish remover that quickly breaks down marine paints, spar varnishes, lacquers, and stains in just minutes, and won't drip or sag on vertical or overhead surfaces. It can remove multiple layers in a single application because it can be applied thicker than other chemical strippers.

DIY boaters and marine trade professionals have been impacted by changing EPA regulations that restricted or eliminated the availability of powerful paint strippers that contained methylene chloride or NMP solvents. What works on household finishes isn't very effective on layers of antifouling paint. TotalStrip is the only effective marine paint remover we know of with no NMP or caustic methylene chloride in its formula. As a bonus, its low odor is ideal for indoor or shop use.

Simply use a brush, putty knife, or roller to apply up to 1/2 inch thick. It works quickly on one-part finishes, removing a layer of paint in as little as 15 minutes. TotalStrip is even effective on tough bottom paints that ordinary paint strippers can't remove.

Its easy-on, easy-off non-caustic formula needs no acid wash neutralization after application – just clean up with water.

Available in a 1 Gallon container.

Info & Guides

Application Tips

TotalStrip is safe for use on most surfaces, including wood, stone, metal, fiberglass, and gelcoat. However, you should always test before applying to a large area. For best results, apply anywhere from 1/4" to 1/2" thick. TotalStrip can remove a few layers in as little as 15 minutes, or leave it on the surface longer to remove more layers. To make the stripper work more effective on multiple layers, apply a layer of wax paper or plastic wrap over the stripper.

Most finishes will lift off using a putty knife or stiff brush. Use a brush or stripping pad with water to remove residue. Make sure the surface is dry before painting. Clean up with water.

Q: null Hello. I have a 36' sailboat with ~20 layers of ablative bottom paint. 1. Should I leave the TotalStrip on paint for 20 min or overnight covered with plastic film? If for 20 min, should I use the cover? 2. Should I expect to get the result with one application, or how many? How many gallons do I need? Thank you

Q: null Hi, will this remove the jamestown deck paint and primer? I did a review instead of a question ....sorry Jay

A: Hey there. Thanks for reaching out. If you're referring to the TotalBoat TotalTread paint, yes, this will remove it. If the primer is a one-part, this will remove that too. If it's one of the two-part epoxy primers, this will not work.

Q: null Want to use TotalStrip to remove Epifanes varnish from an exterior Mahogany door, the interior side of the door is painted. My question is how effective will masking be from keeping the interior paint from being damaged from the stripper?

A: Hey Rob. Unfortunately I don't think regular masking tape will be sufficient for this. I'd expect you'd need to use a waterproof plastic tape.

Q: null I recently got a mid 60s Boston Whaler (13') and someone at some point painted the interior and exterior. I'd like to strip the paint off and buff up the gel coat. Would this be a good product for this? I'm worried that it will soften the gel coat.

Q: null Will TOTALBOAT TOTALSTRIP PAINT REMOVER damage West System epoxy barrier coat when used to remove multiple layers of ablative bottom paint?

A: My experience with TotalStrip: It did not damage the barrier coat. (Also, did not damage boot stripe paint or Awlgrip paint.). But I never let it sit on the stripped areas for more than 20 minutes. It did the job I needed, then I scraped off and cleaned area with soap and water.

Q: null What is the effective temperature range, i.e., will I have to heat my garage space or wait for spring to use this product?

A: As long as it's not freezing outside at night you can use this stripper.  Best results were achieved by putting a light  clear plastic over the stripper once its applied, then take a plastic scraper and work most of the air our, then tape the edges down in a few places.  Use a good sharp pull type paint scraper the next day and you should get very good results. You can sharpen those scrapers with a file as needed.  I used it to strip the multilayered bottom coats off my 28 foot Lancer.  I used 3 gallons total.

Q: null I see the answer for two-pert paints, thinking the same is true for epoxy base under 1-2 coats of varnish. Will I still need to sand to remove the epoxy? If so, is there much benefit in using this product in my situation?

A: Hey Ray, Thank you for reaching out. Unfortunately, this will not be very effective on Epoxy, it's primarily effective on single part coatings

Q: null I'm going to use this to strip some cockpit benches that are made of mahogany. Prior owners had both the original varnish which was damaged and flaking, and then over that, had applied a stain. Can you provide suggestions on how long to apply the remover in order to lift the stain out of the grain of the wood? Thanks !

A: Hey Steven, Thank you for reaching out, It is very effective at removing most bottom paints. Exceptions being the rare 2 part paints, which it can remove but takes a lot more elbow grease.
