Product Details

TotalStrip is a powerful, fast-acting finish remover that quickly breaks down marine paints, spar varnishes, lacquers, and stains in just minutes, and won't drip or sag on vertical or overhead surfaces. It can remove multiple layers in a single application because it can be applied thicker than other chemical strippers.

DIY boaters and marine trade professionals have been impacted by changing EPA regulations that restricted or eliminated the availability of powerful paint strippers that contained methylene chloride or NMP solvents. What works on household finishes isn't very effective on layers of antifouling paint. TotalStrip is the only effective marine paint remover we know of with no NMP or caustic methylene chloride in its formula. As a bonus, its low odor is ideal for indoor or shop use.

Simply use a brush, putty knife, or roller to apply up to 1/2 inch thick. It works quickly on one-part finishes, removing a layer of paint in as little as 15 minutes. TotalStrip is even effective on tough bottom paints that ordinary paint strippers can't remove.

Its easy-on, easy-off non-caustic formula needs no acid wash neutralization after application – just clean up with water.

Available in a 1 Gallon container.

Info & Guides

Application Tips

TotalStrip is safe for use on most surfaces, including wood, stone, metal, fiberglass, and gelcoat. However, you should always test before applying to a large area. For best results, apply anywhere from 1/4" to 1/2" thick. TotalStrip can remove a few layers in as little as 15 minutes, or leave it on the surface longer to remove more layers. To make the stripper work more effective on multiple layers, apply a layer of wax paper or plastic wrap over the stripper.

Most finishes will lift off using a putty knife or stiff brush. Use a brush or stripping pad with water to remove residue. Make sure the surface is dry before painting. Clean up with water.

Funny that the SDS isn't linked from JD's website.

Maybe think about the environmental consequences -- see https://warsawchemical.com/product/total-strip/ and notice the potential harm to crustaceans, fish, algae, minnows.

Expensive for a reason.

I am restoring a 1968 Marinette 28 Express (68marinette.com) and the paint and teak is terrible. I tried the orange stripper but it just wasn't impressive. I bit the bullet and bought the Total Strip and I was impressed. I put it on some of the painted metal and on the wooden wheel. After 24 hours, all of the loose paint on the aluminum is gone and just the white base is still there. I'm sure another treatment would cut through that but it's tougher paint. The wheel was terrible. The varnish or what ever they used on it was decaying. After 24 hours with Total Strip, I pressure washed the wheel and it was amazing. I will post pics. I'm currently doing the teak swim platform and after only 12 hours most of the varnish is removed. I feel if I had left it a full 24 hours, it would have been even better. At any rate, it works well and is definitely worth it. I plan to treat these one more time, sand and then use the Total Boat Varnish Primer and Gleam Varnish and I'll review those and post pics.

Removed 38 years of bottom paint - no sweat

I used this to remove bottom paint from a cast iron keel. I put it on about 1/8 thick, covered it with plastic, and let it sit about 4 hours. I'd guess 10 or so coats of paint came off with one scrape. The product far exceeded my expectations.

I would buy this product again!

Works great, need to apply as directed, let it work (for me at least 30 minutes), then scrape. Removed four coats of paint from 16 year old fiberglass/wood hull. Really liked the low VOC. Bought two gallons, used about 1.5 total so far, best stripper I have ever used!

Works as advertised

I used it on old varnish with good results. It's not as nasty and toxic as other strippers I have used. It took more than one application on thicker finishes, which is okay. No fumes.

Product arrived quickly and in good condition. Well Packaged

I have not yet used the product, but have no doubt that it will work. It will not be used on a boat, on an aircraft instead. The airplane has some aluminum and some fiberglass surfaces for paint removal. The reason to buy a ""boat paint remover"" is to avoid removing the fiberglass gel coat.

Amazing

Used it to restore old detailed woodwork . Removed 100 years of layers of paint effortlesly. After letting it set over night all the woodwork cleaned to bare wood just by using a wet nylon scrub brush. Easiest paint stripping I have ever done. Glad I found this product.

This paint stripper works really well.

I have used Total Strip on numerous boat restoration projects. I am very pleased with the results. It holds very well on vertical surfaces and is relatively low odor. I apply it heavily with a brush then cover with plastic for three hours. Most of the paint or varnish comes off with the plastic. The remainder is easily removed with a putty knife.

Removed a tough coat of Awlgrip white topside paint from the hull of my Seafarer K2 kevlar kayak...no sickening smell is the best part! It helps to cover the applied stripper with 18"" plastic stretch film. Thanks for a great product!
