Been painting boats for 50 yrs & really hate this paint!

First, I have to say we put on a roll & tip, very smooth glossy finish that people think is sprayed or fiberglass. To say the least we are very fussy. If you're painting a pretty small boat hull, then could be workable. Did a lot of research, watched videos (lots of them) hoping to gain in site as to how this particular paint is applied. But a 43ft S&S sailboat hull (1958 wood)...then forget it on our part. A 200 man hour job would had been a total disaster using this paint in a the roll & tip method. Inside an open air building, no wind with humidity was around 40%, 10% thinner...no way enough. Painted the transom first as a test (trying to save the engine turned gold leaf name with frisket cover)...well it went on like tar & never flowed out. We could never ever recommend this paint. I guess some like it, but we could never say that & we've worked with some difficult paints/varnishes over the decades. As we all know formulas change because of the EPA regs...you learn tricks to deals with those issues each product processes...but this yacht enamel was one of those products we won't ever consider using in the future.

I live on the Chesapeake Bay. I use Epifanes yacht enamel for a number of exterior painting projects on my property including doors and some trim on my home. It is remarkably tough paint in a marine environment. Looks great for years !!

I used it for boot stripes replacing decals which fade, peel and look cheap. Best decision I could make. As always, prep is everything. The yacht enamel is very high quality. Jamestown tech was very helpful with instructions

I restored a 19 37 Old Town Canoe. Spent several hundred hours restoring the canoe. Wanted a specially good paint job so I've tried epiphanes in the past and it's worked well. Goes on smooth and dries in less than 48 hours. Recommend this product anytime you want a great paint job.

Q: Hello, This question may seem like an odd one. I refinish furniture and have been hoping to find a product for a high lacquer finish that is sealed and may not need a separate primer. I have looked everywhere and researched this. I am struggling to find a lacquer with built in color that I can use in a paint sprayer. I would use it on a sanded, clean wood surface. Is there any reason that I should not consider using this product for the high gloss, sealed finish I'm searching for? Would a separate primer be needed? Would appreciate your thoughts.

A: ##- Please type your reply above this line -## Hello Reply-To-Answer, We'd love to hear what you think of our customer service. Please take a moment to answer one simple question by clicking either link below: How would you rate the support you received? You can copy the following URL into your browser to rate: https://support.jamestowndistributors.com/requests/211257/satisfaction/new/2WoVB7uD4KywHoVOKLqgdqKiX?locale=1 Here's a reminder of what this request was about: It is sprayable, and commonly used on wood. However it's not possible to get a high gloss finish without first sealing the wood. You could heavily thin the first coat or two of paint and use it like a primer, but primer generally does a better job of filling and is easier to sand to a smooth surface which gives you the best gloss.

Q: I recently took delivery of a wooden/dacron canoe that has been beautifully repainted. The color ""dark green"" was chosen verbally (without the benefit of looking at a color chart...lesson learned) based on other canoes this builder/restorer has historically done. Alas, there was some damage to the finished paint work that I would like to remedy. I asked the restorer for the Epifanes paint number so I could order the correct color and was told ""Dark Green"" #72. Looking at the color chart, the #72 appears MUCH darker than the color of my boat. If I were to guess, I would say the color is #62 jade green or #218! Is it possible to get some actual color swatches I can hold up to my boat?
