Product Details

#6 Silicon Bronze Frearson Oval Head wood screws appear similar to the Phillips head but the Frearson has a more pointed 75° V shape. The Frearson tool recess is a perfect cross which minimizes cam out, unlike the Phillips head, which is designed to cam out.

Traditional boatbuilders love these Silicon Bronze wood screws because they have cut threads and the full-bodied diameter shank. Unlike rolled thread screws with their reduced shank--these screws have a shank diameter that is the same size as the outside of the threads. This completely fills the clearance hole normally drilled for the shank thus creating a waterproof seal.

Info & Guides

Silicon Bronze is the traditional choice for marine construction. It is corrosion resistant, helps prevent rot around the screw holes when used under water, and is relatively strong. Although stronger than Solid Brass, Silicon Bronze screws are not as strong as Stainless Steel. They require a carefully sized pilot hole to avoid breakage. We recommend drilling twice (once for the root and once for the shank) as well as using a fastener lubricant to avoid breakage.

These screws are great. They are a little soft so be careful not to strip them.

Q: do you sell the Frearson drive bits for installing these screws?

A: Jamestown Distributors is the only source for silicone bronze wood screws, but they do not sell Frearson driver bits. I got mine from M aster: https://www.mcmaster.com/frearson-screwdriver-bits/ Unlike Phillips, Frearson bits fit larger and smaller Frearson screws. There is no need to have the exact size for a particular screw.

Q: Is it possible to get/find Frearson head screws in bronze at 2__quote__ or 2 1/2__quote__?

A: Bronze is a weaker material than steel or stainless steel. I have had trouble with narrow diameter bronze screws - as you turn them, especially in hardwood, the heads twist and break off. A #6 screw 2 inches long will suffer from that problem even more than the 1__quote__ screws I've used. I found it helpful to drive a steel screw first into the drill hole to open it up and then replace the steel screw it with a bronze screw. I also use bar soap on the screw threads to make it easier to turn into the wood. Good luck with your project.
