Product Details

#8 Silicon Bronze Frearson Oval Head wood screws appear similar to the Phillips head but the Frearson has a more pointed 75° V shape. The Frearson tool recess is a perfect cross which minimizes cam out, unlike the Phillips head, which is designed to cam out.

Traditional boatbuilders love these Silicon Bronze wood screws because they have cut threads and the full-bodied diameter shank. Unlike rolled thread screws with their reduced shank--these screws have a shank diameter that is the same size as the outside of the threads. This completely fills the clearance hole normally drilled for the shank thus creating a waterproof seal.

Info & Guides

Silicon Bronze is the traditional choice for marine construction. It is corrosion resistant, helps prevent rot around the screw holes when used under water, and is relatively strong. Although stronger than Solid Brass, Silicon Bronze screws are not as strong as Stainless Steel. They require a carefully sized pilot hole to avoid breakage. We recommend drilling twice (once for the root and once for the shank) as well as using a fastener lubricant to avoid breakage.

Great Quality Product from JD

The screws are very strong and will not strip if using the frearson head, much better than Phillips. Great price and would recommend. I use them on gunwales for canoe and boat building and work great!

Still need to find a source for these - JD states that they are available and will take your order however after ordering I am told it is on back order (twice) Jamestown should just state that the item is NOT available - FYI West Marine now carries them.

Q: I have church chairs with screws falling out bronze 8 x .75 inch oval head recessed purchased from you years ago by someone else. The chairs holes are opening up. Should I go with bigger diameter same length screws and which is bigger 6 or 10?

A: A #10 is larger than a #6. You should pilot for the new larger screws with a tapered drill bitt, available from Jamestown, to avoid splitting. Good Luck

Q: I'm trying to replace screws that have gone missing. What is the physical description of this product in terms of inches (diameter of the screw)? I'm trying to match a 1.5 x 11/64. Or, is there a # to fractional conversion chart? Barry

A: I cannot answer your specification questions but I have bought several sizes brass screws in quantity and find them to be reasonably priced, of good quality and will buy again.
