#8 Silicon Bronze Wood Screws Frearson Flat Head

Product Details

Silicon bronze screws appear similar to the Phillips head but the Frearson has a more pointed 75 degree V shape. The Frearson drive, with its cross-shape, minimizes cam-out effectively, while the Phillips head, in comparison, is designed to allow cam-out.

Traditional boat builders love these silicon bronze wood screws because they have cut threads and the full-bodied diameter shank. Unlike rolled thread screws with their reduced shank, these screws have a shank diameter that is the same size as the outside of the threads. This completely fills the clearance hole normally drilled for the shank thus creating a waterproof seal. Full-bodied screws are also stronger during drive in, ensuring a better hold.

Available in 10 lengths from 1/2 inch to 2-1/2 inch.

Info & Guides

Silicon Bronze is the traditional choice for marine construction. It is corrosion resistant, helps prevent rot around the screw holes when used under water, and is relatively strong. Although stronger than Solid Brass, Silicon Bronze screws are not as strong as Stainless Steel. They require a carefully sized pilot hole to avoid breakage. We recommend drilling twice (once for the root and once for the shank) as well as using fastener lubricant to avoid breakage.

I am using these bronze screws to attach some molding on my boat. When going into oak, I find that little all purpose grease helps them set in all the way.

Hi Friends, this order (#S3779782) (July 10) is pending according to your staff with whom I talked two weeks ago. That was after waiting one week. He said that you are back-ordered with the factory and hoped to have information for me within a week. I am out of work on that project until I get those screws. Any word on them yet? Please and Thanks. PeterA

Can't comment. I ordered this on July 9 and it has not been received yet. This is the second time this has happened with Jamestown and is very frustrating.

I am using a lot of bronze screws as I build my Haven 12 1/2. These most recently ordered were specifically for fastening the side decks. The fasten tight and look great.

Silicon Bronze is the way to go!

I am very happy with these wood screws that I ordered. I am assembling the cockpit sole framing in my Haven 12 1/2. The white oak is very dense and very strong. I must carefully drill the screw holes with a countersink bit. Previous screws, stainless and brass have routinely snapped off inside the hole. These silicon bronze screws are very strong. It pays to spend the money on quality!

Q: Which type of screw is better for attaching teak floorboards to white oak stringers , stainless steel or silicone bronze screws?

A: If the boat will be in a salt environment I would use the silicone bronze. If it's freshwater, then stainless steel would work though silicon bronze is better. I understand that if stainless fasteners are used in a salt environment and get covered so they don't have access to air they go through a corrosion like process. One disadvantage to silicon bronze is that it's generally not as strong as stainless steel so you have to be careful not to strip the threads or the Frearson recess when driving them. The Frearson recess (with a Frearson bit) is better combination than a Philips head with a Philips driver and I haven't had much difficulty using Frearson recess screws with the proper driver. My experience with wood combinations has been with attaching mahogany to either Sapele or Okoume plywood so I can't really comment on the wood combination (teak and white oak).

Q: I need 8 #8x2 1/2"" FH bronze screws (and maybe a couple of spares) for a furniture piece. I doubt I'd ever use another 92 of them. Do you (or anyone) sell them in small quantities? Thanks, Bill Hollinshead

A: Sorry, full box quantities only. Perhaps you could buy some from somebody who repairs wooden boats.

Q: what size driver does these screws take I ordered a 5 pack of DB000 frearson driver bits 1' H2 and they strip out the No 8 screw Do I have the wrong size driver

A: My experience. The bronze screws are quite soft compared to what we're used to. I used a steel screw of the same size to set the screw hole, removed the steel screw, and then inserted the bronze screw using a hand screwdriver. I also used some soap to lubricate the screw. Worth the extra effort for a nice clean finish on the gunwales of my canoe. ~mick

Q: The price you have listed for #8 x 2"" frearson bronze screws seems very high (92.66). Is this a misprint?

1 Answer

A: I see a price of $24.27 for 100 screws, or 24 cents each. Unfortunately, that price is not high for a high-quality bronze screw.
