Product Details

Badger Hair brushes are ideal for varnish, topside paint, shellac polyurethane, and other oil-based finishes. Badger brushes have a bushy appearance as the hair is stiff and tight near the root but soft at the tip. This soft bushy tip allows the bristles to hold more varnish and paint while allowing a smooth release when brushed.

These premium quality brushes are made of natural, badger-style China bristle for ultra-fine finishing results. These bristles are somewhat stiff even in longer lengths. Most badger hair paint brushes have a fan or round shape with a flat top for blending. Choose from 1 inch to 3 inch brush widths.

Badger STYLE brush

They are styled after badger hair brushes and are NOT authentic badger hair. It's not a bad brush for the asking price but if you're looking to build a true varnishing arsenal think twice.

Problem free, worked exactly as expected

I was painting some 3"" pinstripes on the hull using Interlux polyurethane. This was my first attempt at trying the roll and tip method. The rollers were perfect and did not leave any sort of fibers. The badger hair brush was fantastic. I am completely amazed at the difference between a badger hair brush and any other brush I've ever used. The paint flowed perfectly and there was never a loose hair. This was the prefect combination. Now If I could only lay down a straight tape line, I'd be on cloud nine

Used big box store brushes for home varnishing projects. Bought these specifically for boat projects and they made a huge difference. Will buy again when the time comes.

I last used these brushes in applying Epithanes on a newly build Adirondack Guide boat by Phoenix Small boat builders in North Branford, CT. They have a comfortable fit for my hand and allow great product release in any alkyd product.

It's not Badger Hair it's Boar Hair

I don't use it because they lied about what is made of. As many do. Quit calling Chinese Boar Hair Badger hair. They are NOT the same animal. You can't get Badger Hair from a Boar. Even in China!

Not really a badger hair brush?

Was looking for a nice small badger hair brush for detail varnish work in smaller areas and overhead work. Jamestown sales said the 1"" badger hairs where not available and recommended this china bristle version mix to try. I told her I would give it try as I am a varnish brush enthusiast. The brush has a lot of bristles and is a little chunky. The bristles are tapered at end for a feathered edge but the short length of the bristles still give it a chunky look. Was loosing a few bristles with initial uses but I it is better now that I have all the loose ones pulled out. Although it is a 1"" brush it is still not that great for small detail work. Just not getting great flow out of it. I am interested if a true badger hair version of this brush would be any better? My search for a better brush will go on.

This product sheds bristles.

I used this product for varnishing. It's possible to remove the whole bristles when they come off if you see them, but the pieces are impossible. These were 1/4 inch or shorter. I sanded and did another coat but had same problem. I strained varnish between coats to remove any dirt or bristles. Sorry, Jim (Janis was name on credit card)

Very Good

Smooth and even for final coat painting & varnishing. Also good brush to use for roll & tip application, but unfortunately need to be discarded after use with 2-part epoxy paint, which I didn't realize when I started. I'd have used a much cheaper brush if I had.

Love it

I'm building a Herreshoff/Gardner Rowboat and I bought two brushes, one for varnish and one for paint. I haven't varnished yet, but the brush has worked very well for painting. Despite my lack of experience (I've never painted anything but a wall) the brush lays a consistent amount on the work surface and has produced a good surface so far. I'm very pleased.

Shipped in a box of exact size as to not allow any movement and bend the hairs on my brushes. Have not used them yet. And I will only use these for that expensive varnish that only flows best when applyied by a Badger.

So far, so good...

This Badger Hair brush threw very few hairs the first few uses I have on it. It does a nice job distributing varnish across surface. To avoid bubbles, brush needs to be loaded up with varnish so you are not pushing varnish out of brush...this 2 1/2"" brush holds a lot of paint so I would not recommend for small jobs.

Not the same as they were

These are impostor badger brushes, they do not hold up well in comparison to the last batch I purchased here in 07. They puff up and lose their shape rapidly and the hairs are not as tightly packed as they used to be (so they do not hold as much material), and they are of a lower quality. I use these for interior shellac and varnish millwork. I am looking for a different source and brand now.

Nice brushes

These are my all-around go-to brushes in my shop (except for bottom paint and red lead jobs). I use them until the bristles are worn down, which takes quite awhile. Nice for straight brushing, and rolling and tipping. I own fancier brushes but I've gotten some of my best paint and varnish final coats on with these. I would like it if the handles were a little more rugged. Otherwise, no complaints.

Varnishing Secret Weapon

When I varnish my mahogany runabout, I roll on the varnish with a foam roller. Then I follow up immediately with the badger hair brush to eliminate the bubbles, and to even out the coat. With the exception of losing a few hairs on the first go-around, nothing beats the badger hair for a suberb finish.

The thing I like most about these brushes is that I can apply a complete brush stroke from top to bottom on a 6' cabinet. This eliminates the transition caused by refilling the brush half way through each stroke.

""Where have you been all my life?""""

These brushes are absolutely SUPERB! I have used exactly ONE 1.5"" badger hair brush to varnish ALL the exterior teak (comanionway boards, coaming, winch pocket surrounds, folding cockpit table, ten-loop S&P handrails, and all the hatch cover surrounds) on my 30 ft sailboat. I have now finished six coats and intend to apply two more! The result is absolutely FABULOUS! Brush marks in the varnish disappear in 15 seconds, there are ZERO issues with air bubbles, and except for a few hairs coming off on the very first coat...there have been ZERO since. The brush applies varnish like silk, cleans easily and is soon ready for the next application. I will NEVER use anything but a badger hair brush for varnish again.

Q: Tech Support, I have applied five coats of Epifanes Rapid Clear to the exterior Teak trim on my sailboat that sail on the Chesapeake Bay. Epifanes guidance seems to encourage users to apply a final coat or two of real varnish as a final coat. Can I stop coating the boards and enjoy the fine finish I have developed with Rapid Clear or should I add a coat or two of Schooner varnish ? Thanks for help, Richard Paden

A: It is up to you really, but they recommend the varnish overcoat for the full 'varnished look' of the wood, and enhanced UV.

Q: To begin the tipping process - do I wet the brush with paint - or do I start dry and allow it to pull from the ridges after rolling?

1 Answer

A: Dip the dry brush in the thinner used with the paint, pad it dry on a rag. Be sure to roll out thin coats, if you are moving paint with the brush it is too thick. If the roller or brush is dragging, you need to add more thinner.

Q: how to clean after varnish?

2 Answers

A: I don't clean my brushes after using them. Before use I drill a hole through the base of the handle just above the ferrule. Then I cut a six inch piece of coat hanger. The brush hangs off the coat hanger, which is stuck through the hole, and it is suspended in a coffee can full of turpentine. Then I put a large Ziploc bag over the whole thing to keep dust out. When I'm ready to use the brush again I simply spin it out using a brush spinner. Brushes last me at least three seasons and I only use them in the spring. The rest of the time they are hanging in the turpentine.

Q: how to tip varnish?

1 Answer

A: I put the varnish on with back and forth or even x-shaped strokes being careful to get complete coverage but not have excess (that's always the difficult balance). I then stretch the varnish out from my left to my right onto new areas to rid the current area of excess, using horizontal left to right strokes. Once convinced I have no excess I brush it back into the old wet edge using right to left horizontal strokes. Then I check for holidays (areas which don't have consistent coverage). Finally, I tip from bottom to top - vertically - very lightly. It also helps to mix in some penetrol with the varnish prior to starting.

Q: Are badger hair brushes the best bet for varnishing?

3 Answers

A: I have used badger hair brushes for years. They do work the best for applying an even coat of varnish at the proper coat thickness. Have minimal 'tipping off' to do as few air bubbles in the coat. If you are only doing a very small area the foam brushes are OK and you get to avoid cleanup but the foam quickly deteriorates and you will get foam particles in the coat

Q: I heard a lot about Badger brushes. Are they really the best for applying varnishes and top coats?

7 Answers

A: Badger Hair brushes are superior brushes for finsh work. They are the most commonly used brush for applying two part urethane coatings. Then are used when rolling the paint to tip the overlaps between roller marks. this along with varnishes and other finish paints make them an excellent choice for pulling through your coats and leaving no brush marks. Just a nice clear finish. You should read up on how to tip an awlgrip type coating as the same principals apply to the other finshes. I have even used foam brushes to apply my varnish then tipped it out with a badger hair brush. Hope this helpful.
