Q: will it bind to HDPE- thermoformed high-density polyethylene

1 Answer

A: Hi there. West System states that this adhesive will work on HDPE, but in general, HDPE is a very hard material for epoxies to bond to. To use this on HDPE, you will need to flame treat the plastic first. Q: I would like to fasten a couple of hdpe skids to the bottom of my West Marine Watertender dinghy. Would be a much better solution than the wheels on there now when moving it across a concrete launch ramp. Will this do it?

Q: Has anyone tried using West Systems 423 Graphite low friction additive with the G-flex 655 K epoxy on a royalex canoe? I am very experienced with West Systems and recently installed kevlar skid plates on my Penebscot 17 with the G-flex kit for a 35 mi trip on the Ontonagon which punishes boats. Skids turned out great and took the beating but i'm wondering if the graphite additive to the G-flex would be a bonus skim coat on the entire bottom of my boat. Wondering if anyone has tried it? Otherwise I may post my results after

A: I'm not aware of it being tried but theoretically itwould decease friction between the kevlar and the rocks.

Q: Assuming it works to repair dings in ABS/PVC coated (over EPS) boards: 1) what color does it cure to, 2) how UV stable is it, and, 3) can it be painted?

2 Answers

A: I have not used it for ABS repairs, but I don't think the substrate matters. I have always treated G-Flex just like I would their standard epoxies. 1. It cures to a slightly yellowish but transparent color - unless you use a West System additive. 2. I don't think it is particularly UV stable, but I have used the original G-Flex unpainted, and, in my application of crack filling, it has stood up well, only yellowing a bit with age. 3. It is absolutely paintable. West System has an amazing array of documentation for their products. I have found it worthwhile to read up on their products.

Q: Will G-Flex adhere to Hypalon used on inflatable dinghys? Need to reattach transom to tubes.

1 Answer

A: Yes, it will adhere to Hypalon quite well. I would use it in areas that you don't need a lot of flexibility as the epoxy will give a little rigidity to the area. Always test a small spot to verify that it bonds well enough for your intended application.
