Product Details

Epifanes Wood Finish Matte Varnish is a one-component varnish alternative based on urethane alkyd resins and tung oil. To help protect the wood without minimizing vibrancy, this matte finish is typically applied over four coats of Epifanes Gloss Wood Finish. Suitable for both interior and exterior woods, this low gloss, matte finish varnish contains UV absorbers to provide long lasting, beautiful rich protection.

This varnish features a non-sanding solution specially formulated for oily woods like teak. The clear amber color combined with the matte finish leaves the wood looking like it was hand-rubbed. Easy to apply with brush, roller, airless spray, or conventional spray.

Available in 500ml and 1000ml sizes.

Only thing is I wish the advertising would CLEARLY state what size the can holds like 1 quart or half pint. Us old timers still use those measurements.

I have been using this product for the last three years for all my finishing projects and the results are consistently wonderful! The finish performance is great! I did a whole kitchen remodel with white oak cabinets that came out beautiful! Way better than any factory finish could ever be.

I have written before about how impressed I was on their quick service. But then they promised delivery on Monday and it came on the following Friday. So you have to adjust your expectation.

    Better than Amazon

I've ordered both from Jamestown and Amazon. They were similarly priced. Delivery was quicker and more accurate with Jamestown and the product was in better condition with no bent cans like with Amazon. I have ordered multiple times with Jamestown and am satisfied.

    Great Product

The color, sheen, and ease of application were great for a couple of outdoor projects I completed recently. As I'm writing this, I only have a first coat on a Mahogany entry door and a planter. I've completed a cedar glider though.

    I wanted a SATIN finish

I wanted a satin finish, which is not made, so I did the following. I put on 6 coats of gloss as instructed. The last 2 coats I used a mixture of 10% gloss in a 1000ml can of matte as follows. I measured 100 ml of gloss and added it to a NEW 1000ml can of matte (yes it will fit). and used 2 coats of this mixture for a PERFECT satin finish.

    My Go-to spar varnish!

Produces a strong, durable finish when applied properly. Multiple coats are required for durability --I typically use 8-10, with 2-3 fresh coats per year.

    Best varnish

We use this on many exterior thresholds, wood frames, etc. It is the go to for professionals and looks great. The Matte is more like a ""satin"" finish, which my customers prefer.

Q: I want to know if your matte finish is compatible with the Pettit 1015 Captains Varnish. I have 4 coats on the deck of Bill Thomas's Fox canoe I'm building and want to finish with your matte finish product.

Q: I have a painted wood table and chairs. I want to create a satin finish. Can I first apply several coats of high gloss over the table and chairs followed by one or two coats of a mixture of high gloss and matte finish to get a final satin coat?

A: I did a similar approach for a custom exterior screen door.  I put four or five coats of gloss on it first, then applied a couple of coats of satin. It needed some tweaking after seven or eight years. This was on the north side of our house. There was a review of exterior varnishes in fine homebuilding many years ago. The Epiphanes product came out on top. If your table and chairs are interior items, there is no need to put that many coats of gloss on the surface.

Q: I have recently refinished a cedar garage door first with gel stain and then 3 coats of a high quality satin varnish. I have used this particular brand several times and have been happy with the product although their satin is more like a gloss in other brands. Unfortunately the client was not happy with the sheen. Can I use your product over another brand to reduce the sheen.?

A: Yes.  Low luster and easy to apply.  However, you will have to apply a yearly topcoat to preserve the finish.  I use on boat's teak, and even with the best prep, yearly maintenance is required.

Q: Will epifanes wood finish matte applied to basswood work? I'm making a sign that will exposed to the weather elements (4 seasons)

    4 Answers

A: Regardless of which finish you choose, UV will gradually break down the outermost layer. When left unchecked water will work its way in causing the varnish to flake. To preserve the base coat it’s necessary to do a regular maintenance coat. Depending on how much exposure to moisture and sunlight, once or twice a year may be necessary on exterior finishes, while interior finishes will last much longer. A little light sanding with 320 grit sandpaper and a single coat is much easier than letting it go and then repairing damaged finish later.

Q: I am needing to re stain our horse stalls. And epifanes was recommended. Will I need to sand all of them down? Is there a product that can instead for put on top of original stain?

A: Yes there are products from ""General Finish"" that are durable and water based. Epifanes oil based products are excellent but not good for occupied closed areas. The oil based fumes can be dangerous, overwhelming and lingering. General Finish has stains and polyurethanes that are water based. You can mix 10 % water based stain into water based polyurethane and end up with an original stain/poly finish. G F has many stains to match your original finish. The water based products can be coated three(3) times in one day @ proper humidity levels. I finish exterior doors and have used this method, many times in occupied houses. Jim

Q: I would like to apply this finish to a mahogany. Will this darken the wood? I want to apply a finish that will not darken the wood. Thanks

    3 Answers

A: I used Epifanes matte varnish on a new mahogany front door about 4 years ago. It did not darken the wood but gave it a rich natural looking finish. We have a lot of natural finished wood in our home and I never use stain. We prefer a soft matte finish that protects the wood without changing the color. Today the door looks as good as it did the day I finished applying the Epifanes matte varnish. We live in San Diego and our front door is not in the sun and not exposed to weather; so, the door is not subject to as much weather as it would be in other parts of the country. Epifanes varnish has proven to be a wonderful product and the German craftsman, who build the door, was so impressed he asked me for the name of the finish. People. who visit our home always comment on our beautiful front door. I did apply the finish just as instructed on the internet. There are some good instruction videos on You Tube, one shows a man finishing a wooden ship's wheel. I put on 4 coats with the first three thinned with 5% Epifanes thinner and the last coat not thinned. I did not add any stain to the varnish because I wanted the wood to retain its natural color. It is important to do the light sanding followed with cleaning off the dust with a damp cloth. I used alcohol to dampen the cloth because I had a lot of alcohol on hand. I also used a high quality natural bristle brush. If you are concerned with how the varnish will look on your wood, try applying one coat to a small area. That is how the final finish will look. If you don't like it, you can always easily sand off a small area of varnish with only one coat. I bought all my supplies at Jamestown Distributors and they were very helpful and give great service. I know your project will turn out great if you choose to go with Epifanes varnish. This is a close up picture of the mahogany door's wood with the Epifanes finish. The white specks are dust. I have not even washed or dusted the door in 4 years.

Q: I have a worn 12 year old main cabin interior floor. Can I apply this after sanding? Will it work without sanding down to wood?

    4 Answers

A: Rob, The problem with a badly worn floor, is that there will be areas that are worn to raw wood and areas with varying depths of finish. Therefore, Epifans will stick, but you will have a ""patchy"" look. I'm a perfectionist, so I remove varnish, escalate sanding from 50 grit, sequentially, up to 250. Follow with dusting of ceiling and walls, vacuuming, then tack cloth removal of any remaining dust. Follow directions diluting the first coat of Epifanes with their proprietary thinner(75% thinner to 25%) varnish. I usually start with 1 or 2 coats of High Gloss to bring out the grain. Then, I follow with 3 coats of Matte, on old floors with imperfections, escalating the quantity of Varnish to thinner. Epifans is as thick as honey in the can, so it needs to be thinned. It is meant for salt water and extreme weather, so I have had great success with it here in our California heat and sun. Two different, south facing front door jobs have not faded, peeled, or changed in ten years. It makes hardwood floors practically indestructible. I love the stuff. Sorry for not giving an easy answer. -Christy

Q: The epifanes matte coat came out to shiny. How do I get more of a matte finish?

    4 Answers

A: If your finish is too shiny, you need to give the can a thorough stirring to get the matte particles off the bottom of the can. (They settle to the bottom)You don't want to shake it since it will add air bubbles to the finish. The stir sticks from Home Depot work well. Do the stirring each time right before you use it. Also, with matte finishes, it's always a good idea to put on all your build coats in gloss and finish with 2 coats of Matte, otherwise the finish will look cloudy with matte only.

Q: We will be refinishing our hardwood floors with this product and would like to know how much square foot it covers per coat?

    1 Answer

A: It is going to depend on how it is applied. Most gallons of paint cover app. 800 square feet with a roller. That being said you might check with the manufacturer. Also might want to make sure that the wearability on a floor with the matte finish will hold up. It might require a gloss finish first and then a matte. I only use it on doors and it is applied with a spray unit. Good luck.
