Product Details

Dynel is a popular laminate fabric used for museum-quality restoration work on wooden boats. It's strong and yet supple like a true woven fabric, with no fibers to irritate your skin. Compatible with polyester and epoxy laminating resins.

Dynel cloth has very high abrasion resistance but swells in the resin such that it works better if vacuum bagged or pressure molded. The most common uses of dynel are for wear patches on boats, edgings on paddles, and the like. It has also been used as a deck covering on wooden sailboats. It seems to be a good choice anywhere that abrasion is a major issue. This Dynel Fabric retains a milky appearance when saturated rather than turning clear in the resin like fiberglass. Available in 5 oz weight and 55 inches wide x 1 yard length.

Dynel

when you apply epoxy to Dynel the cloth will swell or double in thickness which pronounces the weave. DO NOT SAND SMOOTH, best way to fill the weave is to mix epoxy and a easy sanded filler and squeegee on, then epoxy over once its smooth. Wont beat it for bottoms that are beached a lot or skinny water boats

Q: I plan to test a 3'X3' Dynel on a deck with a plywood surface that must be non-skid. What epoxy, and/or other coatings do you recommend?

A: Any polyester or epoxy laminating resin will work but if I were doing it I would use TotalBoat High Performance Resin & Hardeners Application Guide: https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0648/5282/0192/files/totalboat-high-performance-epoxy-system-tds.11.2.22.pdf?v=185548166462055165

Q: Is Dynel suitable for covering/skinning a wood rudder? Or is e-glass cloth normally used for that? this is for below the waterline. Rudder is 2-1/2"" thick, 5 ft deep, 2.5 ft chord. Thanks!

A: Dynel is more used for the effect of looking like canvas. Much cheaper to use 6 ounce glass. It is easier to lay around corners or rounded edges however as glass won't bend easier.

Q: I made a dynel rub strip and added graphite to the final coat as a colorant, strengthener. The rub strip cracked after an accident. Can I sand and apply more dynel/epoxy over the existing graphite or will it not bond?

Q: I'm just about ready to paint my Dynel'd wood trailer cap (with Total Boat Topside primer & paint specifically). I'd prefer a smooth untextured finish after paint (i.e. I do NOT want the Dynel texture to show through the paint). What's the best way to achieve that?? Sand down the Dynel? Add an outer coat of epoxy to fill the Dynel texture before paint? Or maybe just plan on additional coats of paint to fill the texture? Would sure appreciate any advice.

A: Don't sand heavily, maybe 400 paper , fill with epoxy then paint

Q: When painting over a Dynel'd wood surface (with Total Boat Top Side primer & paint in my case), is it best to first fill the heavy Dynel texture with a layer of epoxy to provide a smoother surface to paint on top of? Or better to paint directly on the heavily textured Dynel? Should I expect it to take a few coats of paint to fill the texture in the latter case?

A: In one case (rub strips on a canoe keel) I simply spray painted over the epoxied (G-Flex) Dynel with rattle can black enamel and after a coat or three it looked just fine. It wasn't a Swiss watch I was building.

Q: The Dynel I received in a recent order was exceptional. The weave was tight, and it was smooth with little 'fuzz'. Could you share your manufacturer with me? I am writing a 'how-to' for this project with hopes of selling plans , and a note of who made the fabric would be invaluable. Bets regards, Rob Whitehouse Principle Engineer Cove Engineering, LLC

Q: will this work well in single layer on sport fishing boat deck over marine plywood? is epoxy better than polyester resin?

2 Answers

A: Jr Our use of the Dynel was quite a bit different (used over syntactic foam buoyancy for deepwater applications) but based on our experience I would think you would need more than a single ply over your marine plywood. The cloth is a bit thin and doesn't hold the resin that well in a single ply. We ended up using several ply plus an outer surface veil in order to get a nice finish. We only used epoxy and found that worked well Thomas J Murray Engineered Syntactic Systems, LLC< http://www.esyntactic.com/> CMT Materials, Inc.< http://www.cmtmaterials.com/> +***.****
