bottom paint

J D Sselect was recommended and used. The shipping was as expected and the price was also very good. The paint itself was easy to work with and applied very well. There was no foul taste or atmosphere during the application. I have faith that the product will wear and preform the way it was designed. At this point I would buy more and also recommend to others.

Questions

Q: Is there a bottom paint that is environmentally safe? What brand is the most environmentally safe?

1 Answer

A: Hi Peter. Thank you for your interest in this product. This is a complex question. All of our bottom paints are approved by the EPA. However, bottom paints are fundamentally designed to repel or kill certain types of aquatic organisms, so the nature of this class of products means that it cannot be completely environmentally harmless. This paint uses a traditional copper biocide. There are some formulas that use newer biocides which have to date been shown to be less environmentally harmful by some metrics. Since this paint is water based rather than solvent based, it is a little more environmentally friendly because it does not contain harmful VOCs. If you would like to discuss the environmental aspects of bottom paint choice further, please give us a call at 800-497-0010 and we will be happy to review this with you.

Q: Can I apply Select when Total Protect is at thumbprint stage, or would you recommend a solvent based paint like Spartan. I do not want to sand between coats. Boat has been blasted and will get Total Protect as the primer. Thanks.

1 Answer

A: Hey Jonathan, Thank you for reaching out. Unfortunately, Water based like JD Select do have to wait for the primer to dry and be sanded. For no sanding a solvent based like Spartan would be best.

Q: Evening - Curious your thoughts on this product on a wooden power boat. Last seasons paint is West Marine CPP. Thanks in advance! Luke McCabe

A: I used this paint on a fiberglass hull but suspect it would be similar on wood. I was very pleased with it and continued using it for several years. It goes on very easily and a small amount goes a long way. The small can easily covered my whole 15 foot boat. It worked well in keeping the bottom clean. I suspect that, even though I applied a new coat each season, I might have gotten two seasons out of it.

Q: I've always used Spartan and I'm not even sure why anymore, but I'm wondering which is best for fresh water. Not much grows up here beyond zebra mussels in the cracks.

A: You could use JD Select, it is a single season paint though. The other alternative would be Totalboat Krypton which is multiseason in fresh water.

A: From reading the web site, it doesn't look like it. If another (stable) layer of some kind of primer or barrier coat was present, then probably yes. But if you are going over bare aluminum, the web site says no.

Q: I watched your bottom painting video. He appeared to be using the JD Select ablative bottom paint. He had sanded the previous paint down to the gelcoat and painted the area without primer. My question is, is this an acceptable procedure or should those areas be primed and with what? Thank

1 Answer

A: It is not always necessary to completely remove the paint. Refer to the compatibilty chart under the tech data tab on the JD Select page. There is also a datasheet there with complete application instructions. If you are painting over bare gelcoat it's a good idea to overcoat it with TotalBoat TotalProtect Epoxy Primer & Barrier Coat. Complete application instructions are available under the tech data tab on that page as well.
