Went on easy

The product was easy to use. I was able to put one coat on the entire water line and down with less than 1 gallon of paint for my 31 foot Sea Ray. I found the cleanup to be easy and the added perks of giving you a free paint suit, roller, roller handle, pan, tape, and sandpaper was a nice touch as well. I will see how this paint holds up throughout the season.

I will buy this product again

Special context-- transitioning from Baltoplate (racing) to a hard ablative to save money and to ease cleaning. Baltoplate was sanded thoroughly with 80 grit, but not removed. That base required three coats of Select (gallon and a third) to cover 30' sailboat. Boat in water 157 days, cleaned every three weeks, then two, then every week at season's end. It was kept in racing condition. My only issue was that some areas of bottom paint eventually chipped off rather than rubbed smooth -- I think it was inadequate sanding. My diver really appreciated the improvement, however, so I will stick with Select next year.

This paint was amazing and easy to work with. Just over one quart gave me two coats on a 20' Grady White, and the cost per quart crushed competitors. TB

thin but may be effective

I found the product went on surprisingly thin, despite heavy sanding of previous paint (with which it was advertised as compatible) and extensive stirring. As a result I applied three coats. I look forward to assessing effectiveness at the end of the season. If better than anticipated, I will make it known. In the meantime, still awaiting response to my questions to JD by email.

Tis is a great product, I couldn't get my boat off the trailer so I jacked it up and blocked it up about 6 inches. This was a kit complete with roller, tray and tyvex coveralls. I was able to buy ,2 coats on using about a third of the gallon. I have 22 C Dory cruiser.

Good single season bottom Paint

This is my second season for JD Select. Last year's results were OK with only 1 - 2 dozen or so barnacles from mid-Chesapeake waters. I use two coats of JDS on a 30 ft sailboat that stays in the water 7 - 8 months so a single season paint seems to work for me. Pros - rolls on easily and covers well, adequate protection Cons - does not store well - regardless of endless power stirring, had to strain to get hard chips out of JDS left over from last year.

I like this product

This product is used on my 33 foot sailboat in mid Maine. The boat is in the water from June 1 to October 1. I live on the boat during the summer and get lots, almost daily sailing time. Besides the weekly scrub of the waterline, from the dinghy. The bottom stays clean enough that a quick power wash takes off the minimal slim that accumulated over the summer. A quick sanding in the fall with 180 grit , keeps the bottom smooth and gets rid of any build up. I use one gallon with the foam roller that comes from Jamestown .

probably no in quart size.

I purchased two quarts of the blue bottom paint. after exhausting the first quart, we opened the second of can, and discovered it did not dry to the same color as the first. perhaps we should have mixed the two cans together before application, thus an even color. this insight should be shared with future purchasers of this product.

This product was amazing and they sent the product with the roller pan tape and tyvex suit that I was not expecting for free. It rolled on great and dried just as fast as I could roll it on so there was really no wait time in between coats. I put four coats of paint on my 24' boat in 8 hours. Overall great product.

I did some research as a first time DIY bottom painter. There were very good reviews on this products versus the more expensive products out there. I will say that it went on very nice and evenly. Covered well and dried very fast even in heated winter storage. The boat has not been in the water yet so I can't speak to that but very pleased with the way it went on.

Paint was fine, i bought 3 gallons....I am a little disappointed your salesman could not give me a little better deal on price and eliminate all that other stuff, ie 3 paint suit, 10 paint sticks, 3 scrub pads, paint roller/pad /pan etc. ...waste of good products I DID NOT NEED....I am sure they have a value and I had to pay for a bunch of stuff that was useless to me...I just wanted to buy paint ..John Hull

I was shocked

I have a Cape Dory Typhoon 19' sailboat that I keep in the Great South Bay off Long Island. The first season I had it in the water I used another brand of bottom paint and I was horrified at the amount of growth and barnacles that covered the bottom when I took her out of the water at the end of the season. This season I used JD Select. I was shocked when I removed my boat from the water at the end of the season and saw nothing except a little slime. Not one barnacle nor any plant growth on the bottom of my boat. It was night and day from the other brand I used. I will be going back to JD Select from now on. I couldn't be happier.

Terrible paint

We bottom painted my sailboat in March 2020. Just pulled the boat yesterday August of 2020 ( because of the storm coming up) and the amount of barnacles on the bottom were uncountable. The boat would have looked the same if I had not painted at all. Very disappointed and now having to repaint before I can put it back in the water.

Q: Is there a bottom paint that is environmentally safe? What brand is the most environmentally safe?

1 Answer

A: Hi Peter. Thank you for your interest in this product. This is a complex question. All of our bottom paints are approved by the EPA. However, bottom paints are fundamentally designed to repel or kill certain types of aquatic organisms, so the nature of this class of products means that it cannot be completely environmentally harmless. This paint uses a traditional copper biocide. There are some formulas that use newer biocides which have to date been shown to be less environmentally harmful by some metrics. Since this paint is water based rather than solvent based, it is a little more environmentally friendly because it does not contain harmful VOCs. If you would like to discuss the environmental aspects of bottom paint choice further, please give us a call at 800-497-0010 and we will be happy to review this with you.

Q: Can I apply Select when Total Protect is at thumbprint stage, or would you recommend a solvent based paint like Spartan. I do not want to sand between coats. Boat has been blasted and will get Total Protect as the primer. Thanks.

A: Hey Jonathan, Thank you for reaching out. Unfortunately, Water based like JD Select do have to wait for the primer to dry and be sanded. For no sanding a solvent based like Spartan would be best.

Q: Evening - Curious your thoughts on this product on a wooden power boat. Last seasons paint is West Marine CPP. Thanks in advance! Luke McCabe

A: I used this paint on a fiberglass hull but suspect it would be similar on wood. I was very pleased with it and continued using it for several years. It goes on very easily and a small amount goes a long way. The small can easily covered my whole 15 foot boat. It worked well in keeping the bottom clean. I suspect that, even though I applied a new coat each season, I might have gotten two seasons out of it.

Q: I've always used Spartan and I'm not even sure why anymore, but I'm wondering which is best for fresh water. Not much grows up here beyond zebra mussels in the cracks.

A: You could use JD Select, it is a single season paint though. The other alternative would be Totalboat Krypton which is multiseason in fresh water.

A: From reading the web site, it doesn't look like it. If another (stable) layer of some kind of primer or barrier coat was present, then probably yes. But if you are going over bare aluminum, the web site says no.

Q: I watched your bottom painting video. He appeared to be using the JD Select ablative bottom paint. He had sanded the previous paint down to the gelcoat and painted the area without primer. My question is, is this an acceptable procedure or should those areas be primed and with what? Thank

1 Answer

A: It is not always necessary to completely remove the paint. Refer to the compatibilty chart under the tech data tab on the JD Select page. There is also a datasheet there with complete application instructions. If you are painting over bare gelcoat it's a good idea to overcoat it with TotalBoat TotalProtect Epoxy Primer & Barrier Coat. Complete application instructions are available under the tech data tab on that page as well.
