Preparation & Application Tips

Preparation is the key to good-looking, long-lasting, results. A properly prepared surface is clean, solid and dry. Do not paint immediately after rain, during foggy weather or when the temperature is below 50 degrees Fahrenheit.

If brushing/rolling, thin 5-10% with TotalBoat Special Brushing Thinner 100, if desired, and use a foam roller or firm polyester brush, for best results. If spraying, thin 10-20% with TotalBoat Spray Thinner 101, if desired. Avoid lap marks by not painting in direct sunlight and by coating sections of the surface either down or across hull to natural breaks, maintaining a wet edge.

If your edge begins to dry or you see that you missed a spot and the primer is already setting up, allow it to dry completely before touching up that area.

Do not lather on primer too thickly or you will compromise all flexible adhesion characteristics that make TotalBoat Primer one of the industry's leading one-part undercoats. Dry Film Thickness (DFT) should be 1-2 mils.

Difficult to use. Not sure if I like it.

I paint a lot. This paint is difficult to brush. Needs to be thinned a lot and does not maintain a wet edge. Tried painting right out of can like the JD video shows. That was not a good idea. Lots of orange peel. Needed heavy sanding and I went through a lot of sandpaper. Tried a second coat thinned significantly and used roller only. Second application looks better. Jury is still out on this paint.

topside primer (totalboat)

I bought total boat primer to prime my boat and get it ready for paint. I liked the product, however it was a bit messy and the application with a ""roll and tip"" method gave me a rough surface. Alot of sanding was required. The product did fill well, especially cracks amd other area's where it was needed. I would buy this product again.

First-Timer with this type of Primer. Went on Super easy with a Foam Roller. Immediately applied a second coat (while tacky). Will be sanding & applying WetEdge Paint soon.

I liked the primer, could not get all the old paint off the interior of my boat but rough sanded it and cleaned well with acetone, primer went on very well, no problems and gave a good base for the topside paint.

A learning curve

I'm not sure what they consider ""Dries quickly"" in the promo. I waited 24 hours and it was still gummy. After the second day it sanded nicely and filled the grain on my wooden ketch well. The second coat helped to fill some mild cracks in the wood and left a nice painting surface. I would use again but with better knowledge of the product. Good price. Took more than I calculated for 2 coats.

Newbie Painter

I am new to boat restoration. I did a lot of research before purchasing any brand of paint. But after I saw the ease of use and cleanup, this primer was the way to go for me. PLUS, the price point is awesome! I am restoring a 1976 15ft Bomber Fiberglass Bass Boat. This primer worked so well, I would recommend using a spray gun to apply. I did not try using a brush. Covered in one coat, but I gave it three. Extremely strong, in fact, when I was putting some parts of the boat back together, I scratched the top coat of paint, but the primer did not budge! Very good stuff.

Rock solid

Pretty impressed so far with this new JD Primer. It went on thick and dried fast. I only put on one coat -- sanded that down and put two coats of the Wet Edge over that. Looks great and couldnt have been easier.
