Wet Edge is easy to clean, resists staining, & has incredible abrasion resistance. Our unique urethane formula provides superior adhesion and flexibility, allowing the natural expansion and contraction of your boat's hull without causing the finish to lift or crack. Elasticity provides longer life and increased durability over leading marine one-part enamels.

Brush, roll & tip, or spray on fiberglass, wood, or previously painted surfaces above the waterline. For best results, prepare surfaces with TotalBoat Topside Primer.

Info & Guides
IMPORTANT APPLICATION INFORMATION!

TotalBoat Wet Edge should only be rolled with a solvent safe 1/8" foam roller, designed for leaving glossy surfaces without any stipple or lint. This includes products such as ArroWorthy Mighty Mini rollers, or foam rollers that fit on regular paint roller frames.

Nap rollers: We do not recommend using nap rollers to apply Wet Edge, as they will leave small hairs as well as a stippled effect in the paint that will stand out once it cures, and will generally lay down too much paint for a proper cure.

TotalBoat Wet Edge Topside Paint is not designed for continuous submersion on boat bottoms that remain in the water longer than 72 hours.

Followed instructions. Gave it to light coats. Came out perfect. I mixed two cans of flat with one can of gloss it came out to a nice satin finish.

It dries WAY TOO FAST

This paint dries way too fast. You cannot get a reasonable finish short of sprays. I add so much brushing fluid to it it was like paint thinner and yet you cannot remove the brush marks. So disappointed. You must wet sand and polish to make the finish reasonable, even though it recommends against it. You cannot roll and tip this. It is utterly ridiculous how fast this dries. 2 minutes tops, you can't roll and tip this.

I would never buy this product again

I have used many total boat products and I have been very very disappointed with the topside primer and wet edge. I applied both products in a paint booth that was climate controlled. The primer was still gumming up sand paper 5 days after drying. I had to scrape most of it off until it was paper thin with razor blades. After giving it another week or so to dry, I finally felt comfortable applying the topside wet edge. I applied 3 total coats of wet edge. It took 2-3x longer to dry than the manufacturers data showed. After letting the 3rd coat dry for days, it still didn't feel completely dry. I took my fingernail and scratched the paint to see its durability and it was able to be scraped off. There was still primer under the paint that seemed fine, but the wet edge never adhered to the primer like it should have. It would have simply scraped off with any abrasive like a shoe with sand on it that were to step on the paint. After wasting about 2 weeks and many many hours, I decided it was not going to last and with a lot of regret for using it in the first place, I started stripping it all off of my 13' whaler. It took about 3-4 full days to sand off and strip all the wet edge and primer off the boat. I bought alexseal primer and 501 topside paint and applied it and it looks amazing and is very durable. I regret ever trying the wet edge paint from total boat. Personally I want my money back for the primer and wet edge paint. It wasted my time and cost me days of additional work and cost to strip it all off. I couldn't be more disappointed with using this product. I would never use wet edge again.

Nice paint, flows easy, doesn't run. Will buy again.

I love this paint. Its perfect for my above waterline boat applications. Most importantly, it does not turn yellow in the full sun. It flows easy and on vertical applications keeps together and doesn't run. I wish there were more colors choices available in Flat white. I enjoy just opening the can, and paint! 1 part is a joy.

Excellent Topside Paint

This is the 2nd year I've used Wet Edge Topside Paint on my Chesapeake Light Craft Peeler Skiff and I could not be more pleased. It is easy to apply with both brush and roller, covers well, and looks great. It is also extraordinarily self-leveling. I was also grateful for the convenient ordering and prompt delivery from Jamestown Distributers.

Paint wont dry, did everything right, been doing this for decades and never had this problem. Have fans on it well, still just as tacky. This is a work boat between this and the snail slow delivery, i am missing too much work and in a bind now. Not sure the paint will ever dry at this point. The parts in the sun are dry, temps are mid 60s here in San Diego. I have about $500 bucks invested to totalboat paint and primer and don't even want to crack open another can at this point. Will reach out to customer service but between the primer not covering even half of what they claim, the super slow delivery and now paint that wont dry, imthink it is time to cut my loses. I will miss next weeks work as well so will be out thoisamds of dollars because totalboat seems to be a total fail.

Great paint !

This paint was used on my custom car trailer. It was the perfect color (Flag Blue). I had originally bought Rustoleum Royal Blue, and it turned out to be way too light a shade. I wanted a strong blule color. When dry, this paint is really tough. So don't get it where you don't want it, because you will work to get it off. This looks like it will last a very long time.

I refurbish skiffs. And until now, I've never purchased a product that didn't dissapoint. But! Now that I'm using the Wet Edge paints, the painting results have been remarkable. The white products aren't infused with blue or red undertones, as they are with other paint brands, and FINALLY after decades of searching, white is now white. Finally. It's not blue white. Or red white. Or pink white, or purple white. Its Just white. An absolutely amazing concept. It makes so much sense, I'm almost woozy!

This paint did not cover very well.

We bought two gallons of total boat White. We tried applying it with a quality brush on the ceiling and bulkhead of our vee berth, with the intension of painting all the white areas, except the bilge, of our entire 37' boat. It diid not cover well. We found ourselves going over the work many times with mixed results. We are experienced boat painters. We have painted the deck twice and inside of our boat, once with excellent results. When we called Jamestown to ask advice and complain, the tech agreed that it is a difficult paint to use. That said, it has a lovely sheen and the best use of it would be for rolling and tipping topsides. I used it on our dinghy and it looked good. We gave up on Wet Edge for our boat interior and used a different paint to paint to complete our project.

The most expensive paint I've ever purchased.

Although not the fault of TotalBoat, by the time I'd paid for shipping and SDS fees, the freight charges to ship 1 gallon of WetEdge and 1 quart of brushing fluid to Maui resulted in a charge of $513.18 NOT including the purchase of the paint itself. TotalBoat had the colors I wanted, at an attractive price. However that said, I would not recommend anyone in Hawaii ordering any SDS product directly from JD, unless they are prepared for the freight charges. Find a local supplier!

2nd boat with this product. Love it. Definitely thin to win. Used mini foam rollers and back tipping with the roller into the wet. Layed down amazingly right out of the can. Don't over work it. I would say 4 coats minimum sand with 220 between coats. Looks better than some new car paint I see on the road. I see a lot of posts about this paint not drying or coming off. I would simply recommend following the directions and recommendations.

Q: Using this to repaint a pool slide, if I've lightly sanded the slide? Do I absolutely need a primer or can I just coat with the topside?

1 Answer

A: Hi there, in order for us to give the best advice possible, please send us an email at info@totalboat.com so that we can get more details about your project. A few details about Wet Edge; this paint is intended for above the waterline, so the slide should not be submerged. If the slide has been previously painted, and the paint is still in good condition, you do not need to prime. If it is bare fiberglass or if the previous paint is chipping, I recommend sanding and priming first.

Q: Hi, I am refinishing my sabot sailboat. I am planning on using wet edge inside and on the outside of the hull as well. My concern is the gloss finish. Can you recommend a roller type to use to prevent stroke lines?

1 Answer

A: Hi there, I recommend using an 1/8in nap foam roller and also adding 5-10% brush thinner to the paint in order to enhance the flow. Using a roll tip method with a brush also helps prevent stroke lines.

Q: I need to paint the top side of the hull (not deck) of a Com-Pac Sun Cat Sailboat out in the open air in a boat yard. I plan on doing a good prep job (sanding the gelcoat on the entire hull, fixing scratches and cleaning off old wax, etc), and then rolling the Wet Edge on with several light coats without tipping it with a brush. I've done several boats with an enamel finish and I was able to use this method, followed by lightly wet-sanding-out roller paint lines and bits of air-born stuff that gets stuck in the paint in the open air between coats . I then used a series of 3M compound light liquid abrasives and polishes to machine buff/polish the finish to a smooth high gloss shine. Will this method work with Total Boat Wet Edge Polyurethane Paint?

1 Answer

A: While it is possible to do that with a urethane paint, the general consensus is that it will shorten its lifespan. I find that if you roll the paint out thin enough, it levels off very nicely without tipping. Just keep working it out until the roller lines disappear. There will be some orange peel but the paint shrinks as it cures and stretches it smooth (it takes some practice). I find that light dust/pollen/bugs wash off with time.

Q: Can wet edge be used under the waterline if applied over total protect epoxy primer & barrier coat?

1 Answer

A: Hi Ryan. If the boat does not spend more than 24 hours in the water at any given time, then yes. If it is left in the water for longer than that, Wet Edge would not be suitable.

Q: I have a 13 ft Boston whaler a couple of owners ago someone put a very rough paint or truck bed material on inside of boat. I would like to use topside paint on it but, as your best guess what kind of prep would it need. It is far too rough to sand. The previous owner thought a smooth truck bed paint may have been used to cover original inside of boat. I would appreciate your assistance. Thanks glenn
