Product Details

TotalBilge is a long-lasting, epoxy-based bilge paint specifically formulated to protect your bilge, bulkhead, and locker areas. The constant exposure to harmful marine elements like heat, humidity, mildew, grease and grime requires a superior bilge barrier solution to resist moisture and repel most oils, acids, alkyds and solvents right on the spot.

When compared to the top brand name bilge paints, TotalBilge stands up to the test. The single-component paint is easy to apply, dries quickly, and provides excellent coverage with a much harder surface finish. In addition, TotalBilge is easy to clean and does not lift, mildew, or stain over time.

Available in Gray & White colors, in Quart and Gallon sizes.

Arrived quite banged up

The packaging was completely undamaged, but the can was almost a square, which means someone purposefully chose that can to put in a box to send out. I have no idea how it didn't leak, but I did manage to get the top off and use it. Thus my 2 star rating. This is the second time (and last) I've received damage goods from JD, but thankfully they were still usable.

Great product but follow directions. Bilge coat takes a couple of days to fully cure. Wear a respirator (fumes off ), Side note ,if you have a small area to touch up do not use a plastic drink cup ( it will dissolve plastic in 5 min) .Wear gloves and get everything off your skin or you will buy a new pillow case or sheets(true story)

Worked well for me

Cleaned bilge with denatured alcohol. Make sure to get it dry. Bilge pumps are a pain to work around. I used a brush, not a roller and used only about a quart - less than I expected. Paint goes on easy, even in cold weather without thinning.

Perfect For Restoring Classic Jet Boat

Working on a 1978 mini-day cruiser, we removed both the jet and the motor for rebuilding. Once both were out, considerable stringer and fiberglas repair was done. In addition, someone had rattle-canned parts of the engine bilge area black. Overall, it was unappealing and unattractive. In accordance with the instructions, we applied TotalBilge in several coats. We used the brush in the hard-to-get locations, and a 4 inch roller on the flats. When we started, the temperature was in the 80's, however, the last coats were applied in the 50-70 degree range. The paint does take considerable time to dry, although it is workable even in the lower temperatures and sets a ""skin"" on it in about 10 to 15 minutes. As this is a one-part epoxy paint, we did not expect it to set like catalyzed epoxy. It does not. However, it offers a very nice self-leveling finish with a high gloss. In the areas where we have had spills, it wipes up easily. Not only does the paint renovate the yellowed fiberglas, it nicely seals areas where the original fiberglas was ""rough."" So far, we are extremely pleased with this paint, and expect it to be extremely serviceable. the engine compartment is gleaming white and it provides an extremely bright and clean look.

Engine bilge looks great!

Paint was on the thick side so it didn't cover nearly as much of area. Penetrating the small valleys and contours took extra work and extra paint. Should have got the thinner and it would have been much easier job. Engine was removed to get full access, compartment looks like a million bucks.

What is good for a boat is good for a sink!

I built a darkroom sink out of heavy plywood and needed a way to reliably seal the seams and the surface. A darkroom for those readers who have never experienced any type of photography except for their phones is where real analog magic happens. I used TotalFair to create beveled seams and shape the base for better drainage, two layers. Then came TotalProtect for solid waterproofing - 3 coats of that stinky stuff, and after that it looked like a submarine. TotalProtect is as tough as nails, but I chose it because it has some flex. The mat finish wasn't going to be easy to clean I thought, and then I discovered TotalBilge! The TotalBilge top coat is glossy and helped hide my roller texture in the TotalProtect underneath - 3 coats of that and I was glad of my respirator! Processed my first prints this weekend!

I would purchase this product again, and did.

I am restoring an early 1961 Pearson Triton, I'm using the total bilge product to cover painted plywood features in the cabin, along with fiberglass and the bilge area. The product is working as described, but give some extra time to dry. I put back some recessed plywood access panels after a few days of drying, and when I went to remove them they stuck a bit to the other painted surface, I touched up a few of the contact areas, let dry several more days and everything seems fine. The wood was old and dry so I did apply two pretty thick coats. I need to see how durable the painted surfaces will be.

I Plan To Order More

I used it on a 19 Ft, 25 year old fiberglass boat to seal the inside of storage compartments that are exposed to water. I also coated a sheet of marine plywood that fits inside a seat I was repairing. In addition I used it on the plywood surrounding a wet well compartment. In some places the original gel coat had cracked. I first sealed the cracks with white 3M 5200 sealant. Then applied the TotalBilge Epoxy paint over everything. It stuck to the 3M sealer without any problems. The areas I painted look like new again. My only con is that I would have preferred a satin finish versus the gloss finish. If you don't cover any fine cracks with the 3M 5200, after painting they will reappear. So the TotalBilge was poor at covering thin line cracks.

Bilge Paint Isn't Just for Bilges

I searched long and hard for a paint that would perform well on metalworking machinery. The oils, cutting fluids, lubricants, etc. that are used on lathes, milling machines, grinders, and so forth are tuff on paints and finishes. Anticipating that bilge paint might fit the bill, I gave it a try. It appears that it will be durable but you will have to let it dry beyond the period of time recommended on the label. It remains tacky for a few days even in warm weather. Purchase the thinner recommended for the product when buying the paint. It is necessary to blend paint lines. The grey color is pleasing.

Difficult But Very White Paint

First, the good news, Very Bright White Paint - So Far. See if it yellows, but it starts out appliance white. Second, nice gloss. Cons. Very difficult to apply well. First, APPLY ONLY THIN COATS. Saw one comment that it did not dry. Almost certain that was because it was applied too heavy and not thinned. IMHO, and despite the label, you need to thin this paint unless you are glopping it on an uneven surface. If you are using it in lockers or smooth surfaces, it must be thinned. Second, very hard to maintain a wet edge. Roll one strip and tip it off with a brush IMMEDIATELY. Seriously, this paint goes off like a rocket and once it does, it will not wet out. You will see everything - especially with the gloss. As far as the second coat, unless you let it dry for days, don't even bother with sandpaper. It stays too soft and will only clog it. Instead, use a 3m pad. Green or red works fast. It clogs too, but takes much longer. Also, the paint is really absorbed into raw wood, like plywood edges or any sand throughs in prior paint. I recommend hitting them first, wait a few hours and then put on your first coat - or use a primer. Finally, it really takes two even three coats, if thinned to get a smooth even gloss that is opaque and does not show defects from the old paint. In short, this product may be what it is called: Bilge paint. Using it for cabinets or lockers may require too much effort and other products may be better. On the other hand, if it stays bright white, it may be worth it (most other whites yellow up pretty fast). We will see.

Q: Can epoxy bilge paint be applied over an Easy Fair repair on wood.

1 Answer

A: Yes, you can apply Total Bilge on top of Easy Fair. EPOXY SURFACES: • Epoxy substrates need to be fully cured for at least 5-7 days prior to any surface preparation or before applying TotalBilge. • Once cured, the epoxy must be washed with a mild soap and warm water, then rinsed well to remove any possible amine blush, whether noticeable or not. This must be performed, even if the epoxy is considered non-blushing, or does not appear to have an amine blush on the surface. • Dry the surface completely. • Sand the surface with 220-grit or 320-grit sandpaper. • Remove any sanding residue by wiping the surface clean with a clean, lint-free cotton rag wetted with one of the specified cleaner/surface preparation solvents. • Allow the surface to dry completely before applying TotalBilge, as directed

Q: I have an older model Sea Ray boat and have stuck with the polyester laminating and finishing resins for repairs and added reinforcements. If I use the epoxy based Total Bilge paint am I committing to switching over to epoxy resins on future repairs on the painted areas or will polyester resins be compatible if the area of repair or reinforcement is scuff sanded and cleaned. Dust control in my winter work space is always a challenge so complete paint removal when abrading the surface is not always practical. And if the epoxy based paint is not compatible with the polyester resins then is there a different paint that would be compatible that would be suitable for the bilge, fuel tank compartment, and locker areas. Lastly, if the bilge paint were used to coat some spot repairs on the floor/sole of the boat (under carpet) would standard marine carpet adhesive bond to the bilge paint. Thanks

2 Answers

A: Polyester and epoxy resins should not be applied over any paint. Whatever paint you use will have to be removed and the substrate sanded with 80 grit prior to making repairs. Do not paint the deck prior to applying adhesive. Bare wood should be fiberglassed with polyester resin or sealed with epoxy to prevent rot from moisture trapped under the carpet.
