Product Details

TotalBilge is a long-lasting, epoxy-based bilge paint specifically formulated to protect your bilge, bulkhead, and locker areas. The constant exposure to harmful marine elements like heat, humidity, mildew, grease and grime requires a superior bilge barrier solution to resist moisture and repel most oils, acids, alkyds and solvents right on the spot.

When compared to the top brand name bilge paints, TotalBilge stands up to the test. The single-component paint is easy to apply, dries quickly, and provides excellent coverage with a much harder surface finish. In addition, TotalBilge is easy to clean and does not lift, mildew, or stain over time.

Available in Gray & White colors, in Quart and Gallon sizes.

worked great, very pleased with all of the Total Boat produc

Paint went on easily and dried slick and smooth. I sanded and used the 2 part primer first. I think one coat would have been sufficient but decided to do two coats to make sure I did not miss any spots.

Good Bilge Paint

Nice single part epoxy bilge paint. It spread evenly with good coverage in just a coat. I did a small area where my engine intakes are and I did a 2nd coat as directed (to be safe). The gray is darker than the original gray color of my bilge, but looks great compartment area I painted.

Excellent product!!!

Prep is important to a hood job with proper adhesion. If your not going to sand and wipe everything down you may not be happy with the results. I feel two coats in needed for a top job. Goes a really long way.

Have used before and will again

Very easy to apply. I used a six-inch roller for large areas, and a two-inch chip brush for corners and edges. I kept the boat well ventilated aid used a respirator.

Very easy to use. I used both a 4-inch roller and a paint brush for edges and corners. Inside my boat with two fans going (exhaust and supply), a respirator is mandatory. Coverage is light, but directions recommend multiple coats; I plan on applying three.

It is All I Hoped For...

I used TotalBilge Paint over epoxy repairs to my hull on the inside. It went on smoothly and covered easily with one coat. My bilge looks like new again. The painted surface seems very tough. Walking around on it and dropping tools has not produced a single scratch. So far, I am very impressed.

Good Value

I applied two coats to both sides of a 6 square foot battery/oil tank board after removing it from the boat. Paint applied evenly and left a nice finish. I suggest strong ventilation if applying in a bilge area; the fumes are very strong.

Great for boat storage areas.

Use no more then an 1/8 of a can at a time because of the fast drying time. I was able to coat the under engine bilge area in a short time and was dry to the touch I over 2 hours. Clean up with mineral spirits. Nice gloss shark gray finish.

Total bilge

Bought Total Bilge because of the epoxy description and assumed hardness after curing. I am pleased with the ease of application but cannot speak to it's longevity as it's only a month old. Be advised this paint starts drying within a few minutes so do not go back and re-brush prior areas, you will leave brush marks. Paint has nice shine after drying and very durable finish. Fish hold definitely looks better and should lend itself to easy cleaning. Wear a respirator, this is RUGGED stuff.

Much darker than Web Site shows

Tried to match old Interlux BilgeCoat Grey (which was considerable lighter in color than current) Web Site shows a matching light grey but the actual paint is dark grey. If I had known the shade on the web site was wrong I would purchased Interlux Bilgecoat white & grey & mixed to obtain light grey. Web Site should be corrected

This is the first paint I've used; and I'm not dissapointed. It went on well and smooth, holds its shine, and to the elements. I'll buy Total Boat again.

Can be a problem to use

This product is promoted as a bilgepaint. However, I do not know of many vessels where you have easy access to the entire bilge that would allow you to sand between coats. Thus the three star rating. I can picture someone using a roller requiring an extended handle attempting to get down to the bottom of the bilge in a sailbat or under an engingine between beams, and then attempting to find ways to sand between coats. That being said, only one other similar product that JD sells does not suggest that sanding is required, but I would advise calling the manufacturer in that case. Finally, would I buy it agan - definately not since a areas of the bilge in my boat require special techniques just to be covered with paint. Accordingly, I would recommend using West Epoxy with a coloring agent, and applying a second coat, if necessary, once the first coat is tacky. I have made fiberglass over plywood diesel tanks using West Epoxy and they have lasted for years, accordingly, I would expect the same kind of results if I used epoxy in the bilge.

Q: Can epoxy bilge paint be applied over an Easy Fair repair on wood.

1 Answer

A: Yes, you can apply Total Bilge on top of Easy Fair. EPOXY SURFACES: • Epoxy substrates need to be fully cured for at least 5-7 days prior to any surface preparation or before applying TotalBilge. • Once cured, the epoxy must be washed with a mild soap and warm water, then rinsed well to remove any possible amine blush, whether noticeable or not. This must be performed, even if the epoxy is considered non-blushing, or does not appear to have an amine blush on the surface. • Dry the surface completely. • Sand the surface with 220-grit or 320-grit sandpaper. • Remove any sanding residue by wiping the surface clean with a clean, lint-free cotton rag wetted with one of the specified cleaner/surface preparation solvents. • Allow the surface to dry completely before applying TotalBilge, as directed

Q: I have an older model Sea Ray boat and have stuck with the polyester laminating and finishing resins for repairs and added reinforcements. If I use the epoxy based Total Bilge paint am I committing to switching over to epoxy resins on future repairs on the painted areas or will polyester resins be compatible if the area of repair or reinforcement is scuff sanded and cleaned. Dust control in my winter work space is always a challenge so complete paint removal when abrading the surface is not always practical. And if the epoxy based paint is not compatible with the polyester resins then is there a different paint that would be compatible that would be suitable for the bilge, fuel tank compartment, and locker areas. Lastly, if the bilge paint were used to coat some spot repairs on the floor/sole of the boat (under carpet) would standard marine carpet adhesive bond to the bilge paint. Thanks
