I do buy these brushes again and again

I use them for varnishing mostly, No brush strokes or errant hairs in the finish, the foam does not fall off the handle or get soft half way through the job and they are strong enough for several uses. I just wrap in tin foil and freeze between uses. Also use them to tip when I roll on Awlgrip.

Foam brushes have their place, and as far as foam brushes go, these are much stiffer than the typical cheap quality ones you get at your local big box store or hardware store. They are a great value also when you buy them in these box quantities.

Best quality foam brushes

i've tried them all and these are the best I've found. i use them primarily for good quality paint finishes and for very good varnish finishes. They are not expensive when buying by the box and can be reused a few times if you squeeze them out and place them in a plastic zip bag. i'll save my nice varnish brushes for the fussiest work.

Students use the sponge brushes when I'm doing Arts Integrated residencies in the classroom. Usually around 100+- students learn to recycle the brushes for re-use. The quality is very good, considering how many times they are washed. I also use Jen Foam brushes for my commissions. Art Form? Hand Painted Screens.

I have used Jen foam bushes for a long time on Schooner varnish, Awlwood, and primer and single part urethane coatingsl by Interlux. I have never had a problem with them, and feel I get a good coating with them.

Work well

I have some badger hair brushes, but I used the foam brush for a varnish job using epiphanes and a job using the 2 part Envy. The two products went on differently, but the foam brush gave a good finish on both. And unlike the badger hair brush, no clean up, just toss it. I tried the ""fooler"" bristle brush, but it did not outperform the foam brush and it left bristles in the work.

Not the Jen brushes that JD has sold in the past

The brushes I received were not marked Jen Mfg., in fact there was no marking on them at all. The construction was completely different. JD would not take them back since ""I received what I ordered."" These are not the high quality Jen brushes JD has been selling for years.

We go through brushes like they're going out of style, so getting 3 boxes of the Jen foam brushes is exactly what we need! The quality is excellent and the price is great! We will continue ordering these brushes until they don't sell them anymore!

Good quality brushes

Don't waste your time with the cheaply made ones, these work so much better than the discount store variety. Used these for applying varnish, they allowed it to go on smoothly, cheap ones skipped, stuttered and left waves in the finish.

These are great foam brushes. Complete wiff on JD shipping!!

Ordered a ""box"" and received 36 loose brushes in my box of other products! Apparently the shipping department was using my brushes as packing material. I now have 6 one gallon ziplocks of brushes floating around in my painting supply dept. makes me cranky every time I see them.

These are much better than the cheap foam brushes you find in home improvement centers, and the price per brush is very low. I went through at least 60 of these building a 14 foot sailboat from a kit.

These are the ""good"" throw away brushes. I've tried the cheapies and they do not even come close to a fine finish. I use these brushes through the whole project so I end up using less than the cheapies. Very good bargain.

Best foam brushes

I've tried tons of foam brushes over the years. These are the only ones I'll use at this point. I do all my varnishing with them. I used them for ""tipping"" some 2-part polyurethane this spring, and for tipping some interlux brightside. They worked great in both cases. And JD's price is the best I can find (given that I live in RI, so I can pick them up at the store). [@] might be cheaper for someone who had to pay for shipping. I order these by the box because one box of 2"" brushes takes care of all my brightwork (2 coats on each side of things like companionway drop-boards, coamings, etc., at home; 2 coats on the toerail and handrails at the boat) for about 3 years. One place they're not so great: bottom paint. Seems as if the solvent in Micron CSC, at least, tends to weaker the foam fairly rapidly. I still use them for those tricky spots like between the rudder and hull, where the roller won't go, but they tend to soften fairly quickly.

Questions

1 - 10 of 19 Questions

Q: null the poly brushes I received come apart when using Interlux 2000E. Is this normal?

1 Answer

A: That is normal. According to the description they are ""Standard Foam Brushes for use with varnish, enamels, stains, latex, and oil paints"". 2000E is relatively thick two part epoxy that should be applied with a natural bristle brush or solvent resistant rollers. Rolling with a thin nap roller generally gives you the best results.

Q: null What kind of brush or roller (made any where except China ) would I use to apply 110 degrees F. Hot bee's wax to a rough plastic surface for adhesion ? Thanks

1 Answer

A: I use a foam brush for beeswax application. I don't know if it will adhere to plastic. I usually use heated beeswax in mineral oil as a safe finish for cutting boards.

Q: null Hi - I'm refinishing my boat interior with Interlux Schooner 96 varnish, applying it with a high quality ox hair bristle brush. I'm getting small amounts of dust in the dried finish, which I believe are coming from the brush, not the surrounding air. I'm considering using a foam brush for the final coat, to get a smoother, dust free finish. Can these brushes be used with Interlux varnish without falling apart? Thanks, Clark

A: Be sure to use a tack cloth immediately before varnishing. And before that, clean, clean clean after sanding. Be careful to use lint free cloths to wipe down surfaces. Wiping with alcohol AFTER cleaning and before tacking has helped me. JEN brushes are great, but do not try ordinary foam brushes, like from HD or Lowes.
