Pettit EZ-Poxy (formerly Easypoxy) is a highly rated, one-part polyurethane topside paint improved by the addition of silicone for a brilliant shine and easy brushing. It also contains UV filters to enhance the already superior gloss retention and durability of polyurethane.

Safe to use on wood, steel, aluminum, and fiberglass with proper surface preparation. Either method results in a topside finish that is easy to apply and produces a lasting gel coat-like brilliance with minimum effort.

Pettit EZ-Poxy polyurethane paints are available in 35 popular and high-gloss topside colors. All are sold as quarts, except White and Semi-Gloss White, which can be purchased in gallons and quarts.

Info & Guides

SURFACE PREPARATION

The surface must be free of dirt, loose paint, rust, oil, grease, wax, soap and any other foreign matter before painting. Clean painted areas by washing with a solution of 2 cups household ammonia per gallon of water and rinse well. Remove existing mildew with household bleach instead of ammonia.

APPLICATION INFORMATION

Stir thoroughly before use. EZ-Poxy may be applied by brush, roller, conventional spray, or airless spray. For brush or roller application, apply without thinning, although in hot weather 5-10% Pettit 120 Brushing Thinner may be added to maintain a wet edge. For best results on large, smooth surfaces, roll out using a short nap roller followed immediately by leveling off with the tip of a brush.

For conventional spray application thin 15-20% with Pettit 121 Spraying Thinner. Apply one, thin even coat per day. After an overnight dry, lightly sand with 220-grit sandpaper and apply a second coat.

Applying two or more coats in one day or applying excessively heavy films (greater than 4 mils wet) will lead to insufficient through-drying of the paint and will yield soft paint films. For airless spray application, thin up to 5% with Pettit 121 Spraying Thinner.

Utilize a .011-.015 inch diameter tip for application. Do not apply EZ-Poxy on extremely humid days (90°F+ RH) or when rain is threatening. Do not apply in the late afternoon when working outdoors as the wet film may be adversely affected by dew. When working in cooler temperatures, be sure the air and surface temperatures will remain at or above 50°F for at least 8 hours after application.

Paint job looks good

Painted my 1987 Starcraft mariner restoration project. Paint job looks good but time will tell how this paint holds up. I put on 2 coats of barrier coat and 3 coats of dark blue Pettit ezpoxy.

5 Stars for Jamestown, 1 Star for Pettit's poor color match

I am very disappointed in how the Mediterranean White color does not match the color chip at all! It is many shades lighter than the chip (see photo). It is even worse in person. Any suggestions on how to get a closer match? Several have commented that this paint should not be tinted (can it, with out affecting it's properties?). It is only being used on a very small area, so it is not cost effective to purchase one or more cans of other colors to use as tints. On the other hand, I am very pleased with Jamestown Distributors. This was my first order, and everything was perfect and on time. Thank you!

I have used this above and below the water line for boats that don't stay moored for long periods and never have a problem with this paint. It's easy to apply, leaves a nice finish and very durable.

What a great product!

I have been investigating existing products for coating the storage spaces in my 28 Rampage and was excited to see Petit not only came up with a great easy epoxy finish but it actually was available in the original color of my boat. It went on as easy as any paint and the result looks and wears like gelcoat. Any boat owner knows the feeling when they find something that works obetter than expected and this one definitely fits that description!

I like this boat paint !!

I had really agonized on what to use on a VERY old oxidized water slide that was given to me. I dreaded trying to use an epoxy mix .....When I viewed the instructional side by side video Jamestown website had of three paints on a kite board, I decided to give this topside boat paint a try. It was very easy to apply, very shiny and slick with minimal brush stokes visible ... I put two coats with plans for 3rd but grand kids came over and had to try it out ... looks great ????

I would buy this product again

I purchased this topside paint for my 1969 Trojan Express Cabin Cruiser (all wood) to touch-up some repaired areas. It drys quickly and usually covers well in one coat. It is very bright, shiny, and quite durable. I have used it before with satisfaction. It does have a tendency to run or sag, but knowing that, you can go back and brush out before too dry and it will still flow out and brush strokes disappear.

not impressed

Sprayed on with syphin fed cup gun. Used recommended thinner for application and let it dry for a week. I got black flames on white background when I taped off the white to spray black the tape peeled the white with it. Three weeks later both colors will scratch or come off if you do much as look at it funny. Surface prep was spot on. Scuffed with a scothbright vacuumed tack cloth solvent wash. Smh. Winter is here in New England maybe it will harden by springtime but I'm not gonna hold my breath.

Important Tip

WARNING: I read many negative issues with paint clumping at the bottom and going on too thin. The solids have settled to the bottom. Very difficult to stir or mix yourself. Do yourselves a favor and take EVERY can including the primer to any hardware store and get them to shake it up for you for 3 minutes. Do it again if cans sit for a while. Issues solved.

Color is Completely Wrong

My husband loved the paint and couldn't believe how easy it applied and how great it looked. I selected the paint color to match seats that were already purchased. The ocean blue looks more like an electric blue on the color samples shown on the website. It is actually more similar to the bikini blue or powder blue with tones of gray. We should have purchased the electric blue, but it appears to look navy blue on the sample. Since my husband likes to get things done quickly, he painted the entire boat before the seats were installed. He now agrees that the color does not match and he needs to repaint the entire boat. I would have given this product 5 stars if we didn't have this issue with the color being so far off. I would highly suggest getting a color sample before you purchase this product.

defective product

Product said to use thin coats. I light sanded and cleaned the surface as recommended, Cut in with brush, rolled with recommended roller type. Product was like water, roller left bubbles as usual, but did not flatten out, as usual. Am in the process of sanding the entire surface to remove product. Used the same product 3 years ago and it worked perfectly. This time it had to be defective

Not the product it used to be

I have used Petit marine paint since the 60's. Always had good flow out and durability. This gallon I purchased was thinned to a consistancy that you would normally use for a spray gun. It stated on lid to use thin coats if brushing or rolling. Little bubbles formed when rollimg and stayed there when it dried. I would not consider using this product again, unless someone can prove I received a defective product. I am in the process of samding it all off.

Looks like new!

Perfect for what I wanted. We are rehabing a 1964 airstream Bambi. We had the old yellow grazed shower/toilet pan. It was ugly and I didn't want to use it. Then I read about your Petite easyPoxy topside paint someone else used on their old shower pan and I looked at your website and ordered it. Looks like new and it is a nice hard professional finish. Would highly recommend it. I am also going to try it on an old claw foot bathtub we have here at our vacation rental place. We renovated 3 old houses but I need to refinish the tub. That will be my next project with easypoxy. Thanks, Virginia

Good Results when properly applied.

I had never done roll & tip before but once mastered the result looked nearly sprayed on. This was a large surface project on a 40' house boat still tied to the dock. It took 2 coats and I believe it would look even better with a 3rd. This must be applied in even thin coats otherwise you'll get runs & sags. Keep a sharp eye out for those afternoon T Storms. It doesn't like to get wet too soon.

Roll and tip and it comes out perfect

I used this to paint the transom and deck of my Tanzer 22, it came out perfect even without priming it. I used a small roller and then tipped it with a 3 inch brush to smooth it all out. Two coats was all i needed to do to cover it because of the white gel coat underneath. I was considering spraying it and doing the whole boat in the fall but after seeing how nicely it went on i think i will just roll and tip for the rest of the boat. I plan on doing the interior with it sometime this summer as well.

Great color match!

Ordered this paint to repaint a boat the same color as I did in 10/18/2009. This paint is on a drift boat that gets a lot of use, and this paint has held up better then I ever expected. One tough paint! The color matched perfect! The only advice I would give on using this paint, is let it cure up, don't be in a hurry to get in water, I let my boat paint jobs setup for three weeks to a month.

White Easypoxy yellows significantly in

The head and shower on my boat is fiberglass and the gelcoat had aged. I painted all with gloss white using roller and tippping with a brush. I got a wonderful result looks like it was sprayed. In time the gloss white has yellowed significantly. I wanted to touch up a coupl of worn areas and the yellowing in one year was so significant I would need to re-coat the entire shower and head for it to look normal.

Sand 80 grit and 2 coats primer with the 6149 and 15% 12121 thinner. Sand with 120 grit and paint 1 coat per day with Top Coat thinned 10-15% with 12121. Don't touch for a week and it will be hard as a rock. Before starting the full project I tested the above method and after a week I tapped it with a steel wrench. No chips, dings or scratches.

I believe there is particleboard underneath them as there was in the bedroom I tore the carpet out of. I am also wondering if it could be used on particleboard

A: It will not adhere to the peel and stick tiles. I would not recommend using it over particle board.

A: From the tech data link on the website: ""If the old paint is a latex or water-based paint, or is in poor condition, remove it with a paint and varnish remover or by sanding. Proceed with instructions for the appropriate bare surface system."" For an extra durable finish, add the Pettit performance enhancer.

Q: What is the shelf life of an open Quart of Ezpoxy Paint?

1 Answer

A: Hi Pete. Thanks for reaching out. Unfortunately it is hard to predict the shelf life of opened paint because it can vary greatly depending on conditions and exposure. To extend the life as long as possible, store the quart tightly closed in a climate controlled location out of direct sunlight. You can also spray some Bloxygen into the can before closing, which will settle over the surface and help keep oxygen away to delay skin-over. You can find that here: https://www.jamestowndistributors.com/product/product-detail/63940

Q: I recently purchased an aluminum bass boat. The previous owner painted the upper rail (gunwale) with Krylon Fusion spray paint. He said he used a Rustoleum primer first. My Question is if I wanted to use this product can I apply it over the existing paint? If not do I need to just sand to ruff up or do I need to get it down to bare aluminum? Thanks

1 Answer

A: Hey Timothy, Thank you for reaching out. We cannot guarantee the Ez-poxy over the rustoleum and especially the krylon. You would have to test it first. If you sanded down to bare metal you would have to prime the metal first as Ez-poxy is not designed to go directly to metal. Please refer to: https://doc.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/pdfs/Pettit/Pettit_EZPoxy_Technical_Data.pdf for appropriate primers for different substrates
