Product Details

Semco Teak Wood Sealer waterproofs and protects teak furniture and marine wood surfaces. This durable protectant maintains a protective coating through winter, eliminating the need for deep cleaning. Semco teak wood sealant goes on easy, dries quickly, and provides a non-slip finish.

Keeping exposed teak looking its best is challenging. Varnishes aren't ideal as the natural oils of this wood can cause blistering or peeling. Most common teak protectants are solvent and linseed oil based, and oxidize over time. The oxidation of surface oils causes teak wood to appear weathered or gray.

Semco teak sealer contains UV protection and a mildewcide to eliminate these problems. It can also be used to seal other woods such as cedar, oak, and pine, though you will need to varnish over it on those woods to achieve a glossy finish.

Choose from three popular shades: Cleartone for a clear finish, Natural for golden tan glow, and Goldtone for reddish-brown luster. Available in Quart and Gallon sizes.

Info & Guides

Technical Information

  • Many sealers promise to protect wood and repel water. Semco does it without the side effect of creating a slippery surface.
  • Withstands staining, weathering and discoloring up to a year.
  • Because the treatment is easily renewed and usually lasts a season, you won't have to endure tedious deep cleaning normally associated with teak restoration
  • Manufacturer coverage specifications: 1 gallon Coverage is approx 200 sq ft for 1st coat or 400 sq ft for the 2nd coat.
  • Cleartone contains no pigment, looks like oil, and is not as weather resistant as the other shades.
  • Natural imparts a golden-tan glow to the wood that resembles slightly weathered teak.
  • Goldtone produces the reddish-brown luster of teak that has been freshly sanded.

This worked well for me and my family.

I used this on my outside teak deck after thoroughly cleaning it and hand sanding rough areas. I sealed it with this and it left me with a beautiful color on the deck in combination with another pigmented sealant I also used. I combined it outside for a beautiful finish which my family members said made the deck looked like it did when I first got it installed.

I have used this product on my teak for years now !!

We have a 1963 Rybovich teak with fore deck & cockpit (motoryacht)..Now I use Clear Color on my new deck (about 10 years old now) when I had the older deck (god knows how old) I used a combo of natural & clear to enhance the color..if you really like color add some gold ..often people use gold & complain about too much color. Give it a day or two before you see true finish. Deck always looks like there is no product on it and never gets black and is not slippery..It is easy to put on with a rag like water. It can be re-coated immediately. Can be cleaned & re-coated mid year or just let it go to a light gray which is also nice ( My husband like grey & I tan so it is a good compromise through the season. I do sand each season to reduce the hard wood & prevent trapping water. I don't find it damaging the black caulking ..

Reppeals coal dust from the pier up wind of my boat. When using teak oil, it constantly needed cleaning. Other varnish like products covered up the grain of the wood and after a couple of years would need to be stripped with a scrapper.

New teak for old

Cleaned decks as reccommended, applied as directed, two coats. Teak looks great. Cleans off dirt and bird poop with rinse from hose. Good traction on deck, wet or dry. Easier to apply than expected. Easier to wipe off fiberglass and metal than expected. If it lasts four months (in Florida sun), I'll give it five stars, but it's too soon to tell about that.

Good product although two types of teak furniture - table, chairs - accepted finish quite differently. Better finish than oils. ""Haz Mat fee"" seems like a hidden cost.

My First Time With a Teak Deck

Bought an older boat with decent but dirty and greyed out. Haven't had teak decks to care for before, so I did quite a bit of reading. All comments about the product were pretty favorable. You definitely need to deep clean the teak before you apply. A two-part cleaner - just this once - is the best choice. (I missed a spot and it shows.) The product is thin and runny. If you apply it with a brush, watch for drips. Keep it off fiberglass and metals (or wipe it clean before it dries). It goes on very quickly and is easy to spread. Flood it on and let it soak in. A second coat goes on immediately. It dries - or soaks in - quickly. If it lasts as promoted and protects over time as promoted, I'll be a five star user instead of just the four I've given it so far.

My rosewood veneer decks are sexy. I keep my melonseed covered when not in use, and I strip off the cover and give her a good scrub, then brush on and scrub in Semco with a rag. It is a very transparent finish but protects like crazy.

Product seals, but leaves teak natural appearance. Particularly useful on sailboats as this product does not make deck/cockpits slicker than bare teak, when wet.

Amazing results, but will it last?

I didn't want to have to varnish all the teak on my Westsail 32 (teak decks, etc.) but didn't like the dirty, worn, shabby look of just weathered teak. I sprayed the wetted teak with Tilex, wiped it around with my hand, let sit for five minutes and then scrubbed the teak clean with a plastic kitchen scouring pad. The difference was amazing, but then applied the SEMCO gold to the teak with a small sponge brush, being careful to wipe most of the watery SEMCO off in the can, then brushed on three coats. The teak looks like new wood and has been through several rainstorms and Florida sun for a couple of weeks and still looks great. Hopefully it will last at least six months. The SEMCO soaks in, doesn't build up, and water does beadsup on it. Great so far.

Best of the oil sealers in my opinion

Follow the directions and it works as advertised. in the Spring, I clean the teak with Comet cleanser and apply three coats of SEMCO Gold tone. By September (In the Chesapeake Area) you need to apply another coat. If you want less work in the Spring, apply a couple coats. Great stuff made here in Maryland.

Not pleased

I used the Semco sealer on my teak swim platfrom for one season and was not happy with the durability of the product or with the unnatural color it gave to the teak. IT just didn't look good. I would not recommend this product. I think either varnish or oil provide a better look and superior durability.

Semco Teak Sealer - Natural

Semco Teak Sealer is a fantastic product to seal and provide UV protection to boating teak surfaces and home furniture uses. We power washed then sealed all of our beach side teak this year and it provides such a beautiful natural tone, that some people thought we got new furniture. We waited five years which was too long. Will probably put a coat on each year from now on.

Product is Great & performs as promised

Tried applying this product with a sponge brush but is very runny and is better applied with cotton rags/tee shirts. Very even coverage, absorbs well into the new teak chairs and tables I used this on. Has been through 6 weeks of heavy rains and is still working well and looks great. I highly recommend this product for all your teak sealing needs. I used the natural/clear product and love the results. Wish the product were less expensive, but you get what you paid for in this case.

One late spring(after pollin) application a year on my teak deck after a light wash with soft scrub brush. Gold color dries to an orange tone. I have mixed natural and gold, but prefer 100% natural. Have not needed sanding for 3 years now. Probably next year. Always apply on sunny dry day, 2 coats and make sure first coat dries fully. Good stuff.

No more searching

The frustrating expensive search for product to protect the teak deck and exterior trim work on my restored 42' Trojan has ended. Following extensive restoration, I didn't want to seal teak with epoxy or varnish (unnatural look and too hot to walk upon comfortably) but didn't want the ""natural"" grey look either. After sanding, applied three coats of Semco gold. While admittedly subjective, I LOVED the look. Lasted year easily, refreshed with one more coat. Excellent protection for deck. Speeds cleaning. Never looks ""oily"" or ""greasy"" - does not darken or bleach out. Works well on small trim pieces as well.

The teak sealer is great. I use it every few years when my outdoor teak furniture is looking tired and moldy. Despite being warned against it, I washed the furniture first with a power washer, then applied the Semco product and it looks great.

Questions

Q: Using the teak sealer on a sail boats teak do I have to put anything else on to make it last longer

1 Answer

A: No, you only use the sealer. Other products are not compatible. How long it lasts depends on your climate and how much UV exposure it gets. Regular maintenance is required so it's a good idea to clean the teak and recoat it before it starts to show signs of wear

Q: What is the difference between clear and natural sealer for teak outdoor furniture? Considering using Semco product.

2 Answers

A: I would go further and say that the clear color really doesn't hold up. Semco even says so. Why use a sealer that doesn't seal. I don't agree that goldtone looks like fresh-sanded teak - it is orange tinted more like wet teak, maybe even a little more orange than that

Q: I'm trying to decide on which tone for my outdoor teak furniture. It sounds from reading the comments it is between natural and gold tone. I like reddish brown, but not orange. Do you believe natural should be my choice.

1 Answer

A: I got the Gold Tone the first time I bought it for the deck on my boat. It was VERY orange in color. I now use the natural. In the can it looks orange/brown, but after you put it on and wipe it off, it's muted down to a brown. Use a two/three part teak cleaner first or you will get lots of spots of color. Also mask off any areas that might get spatter as it will stain concrete, painted surfaces, etc. Good luck! Cheers!,

Q: I am absolutely going to use Semco, it checks all of the boxes for me. I've done a fair amount of research and can't quite find the answer I'm looking for. I have teak that has been abused for a long time. I washed my teak and it is extremely grainy and not smooth at all- lots of ridges. Should I sand it down before I apply semco? Do I have to clean it after or just get all of debris off then seal? Thank you!

4 Answers

A: Chris. I have a 30 year old sailboat with teak decks that I have had for 20 years. I have used boat soap and water for 10 years and had decks where there were ridges of heart wood and valleys of sap wood. No coating. I did a lot of investigating also (I am a chemical engineer with 40 years experience) This is a complex problem with no prefect answer. I decided to first clean the deck with a mixture of soap, oxalic acid 7 oz. powder/gal. water. Leave it on for 10-15 min. then rinse with water saturated with baking soda to neutralize the acid absorbed into the teak (let it soak for about 20 min- - Make sure all bubbling has stopped for at lease 10 min.) then rinse it well with plain water. You now have a very clean deck and when dry you can sand it gently to get rid of about 80% of the ridges. I would not sand it completely flat. I then put on the Semco. I would only use the clear. You will be faced with reapplying a coat every 4-6 Months. Buy your oxalic acid and bakeing soda in bulk , on line, not from a store that is premixed! Hope this helps. Read up on how to manage oxalic acid first. Steve
