Isophthalic Gelcoats create a durable, shiny finish, and are available with & without wax additive.

Gelcoat with wax makes the final gelcoat layer cure to a hard sandable finish, with no wax paper or special tools needed.

Gelcoat without wax additive is ideal if you're laying up a mold for a new boat or a fiberglass part where you're laying down the gelcoat first, then applying more layers of resin and fiberglass on top. In this case, you don't want the gelcoat to cure completely.

Available in Neutral and White. Neutral gelcoat makes bold colors when coloring agents are added. White gelcoat becomes more opaque with coloring agents.

MEKP is included as the catalyst. To thin, use styrene (sold separately).

White is available in Quart and Gallon sizes, with and without wax, Neutral is available in Quart size, with and without wax. Wax additive also available for use with gelcoat without wax.

Info & Guides
The gelcoat you are buying is an Isophthalic NPG gelcoat with or without wax additive.

The gelcoat without wax is used for layups when you want the initial layer of gelcoat to remain tacky to the touch while you're laying reinforcement plies on top in order to create a strong chemical bond in the laminate. If you use unwaxed gelcoat as the finish coating, you must spray PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) over it or use wax paper or some other means to effect a proper cure.

The gelcoat with wax is used for an air dry post-applied application. The wax additive rises to the surface, making a film that creates an air barrier, allowing the final gelcoat layer to cure properly.

IMPORTANT - Do not Apply Gelcoat Directly on TotalFair:

Gelcoat should not be applied directly over TotalBoat TotalFair epoxy fairing compound or the gelcoat will not cure properly. Instead, apply TotalBoat 2-Part Epoxy Primer or TotalBoat TotalProtect Epoxy Barrier Coat Primer over TotalFair, before applying Gelcoat. Primers are sold separately.

MIXING DIRECTIONSs: NOTE: The higher the percentage of catalyst, the faster the gelcoat will dry. Air and surface temperature will also affect the drying of the gelcoat. The colder the air temperature, the higher the percentage of catalyst you should use.

TotalBoat Gelcoat requires MEKP (methyl ethyl ketone peroxide) catalyst to cure. As with all polyester resin, rate and degree of cure are a function of catalyst concentration and of temperature. Resin and work area should be between 70°F and 95°F to ensure satisfactory results.

At 77°F, TotalBoat Gelcoat requires the addition of 2% MEKP catalyst, by volume: 14-16 drops per ounce, or 2 teaspoons per pint, for a working time of 10-15 minutes. The amount of catalyst may be adjusted in small, incremental amounts, either upward or downward, to account for temperature differences (more for cooler temperatures, and less for warmer temperatures). The acceptable amount of MEKP is 1-3%. Do not use more or less catalyst than this or you may get an improper cure, with laminates exhibiting moderate to severe post cure after demolding. Once cured, the gelcoat can be dewaxed, wet sanded, and buffed.

Tip
If using a wooden mixing stick, place the stick in the resin before adding catalyst so the wood doesn't absorb the catalyst.

Directions for Wax Additive (sold separately)

Wax additive is a mixture of paraffin and styrene. When adding it to gelcoat, you must also add the MEKP catalyst. Wax additive is added to the gelcoat on the final layer of a wet layup to create a tack-free surface that sands easily before applying the finish coating. Wax additive is not needed when additional layers or gelcoat are applied on top. Add 4 oz. of Surface Seal Wax Additive per gallon (20 drops per ounce) of TotalBoat Gelcoat Without Wax. Note that in temperatures below 70°F, the paraffin can solidify in the container. Place the container in the sun or in front of a lamp to liquefy. USE CAUTION - WAX ADDITIVE IS FLAMMABLE!

Wax additive is available in a 4 oz. bottle. Refer to the table in the Tech Specs section for how much wax additive to add to gelcoat without wax. Too much wax additive will result in fish eye and other undesirable results.

WARNING: This product can expose you to chemicals including styrene, which is known to the State of California to cause cancer. For more information, go to www.P65Warnings.ca.gov

Be careful - no instructions, limited self life

As others note, no instructions come with this product, figure is out for yourself! Obtain the technical sheet to determine the amount of catalyst to use. It can be thinned with small volume of acetone, but the results are unpredictable. Be aware that the unstated self life of catalyst and resin is < 12 months!! That means you must use it as soon as you get it. If it remains tacky after a reasonable cure period the resin or catalyst are probably no good. This product can be sprayed using a PREVAL bottler sprayer, or it can be spread using a foam roller. Total Barrier product is almost as good as this gel coat for small shallow repairs. Also, if you use the Total Fair product (very good and easy to use!) you must also use a barrier coat before applying gel coat or the gel coat will not cure properly. Jamestown Tech Support can help with getting the right products and can reveal aspects of using all this stuff that otherwise you have to learn the hard and costly way. I would recommend the product with cautions given above.

I would buy it again if need be. I used the gelcoat with wax and a bit of white tint for my Laser hull. The quart size is overkill, so I'm hunting for new gelcoat scratches to fix. I guesstimates with the catalyst for a one ounce batch, and it seemed to work just fine.

Very straight forward but difficult

I used this product on a fairly large area - more than a couple of square feet. I had problem mixing the right amount for the job. The temperature is pretty high so I worked in the mornings and evenings late, but it still set up way too fast for me to do a small part of the area. I finally did it with no more than two oz at a time and put only 10 drops in the 2 oz to get a slow enough cure. Use a square 1"" wide spatula and stir like crazy, scraping the edges and the bottom. Also was very messy - it sticks to everything especially nitrile gloves. That was a pain, but the job is super fine!

Minor Gelcoat Repairs

Had ding in the gelcoat about half the size of a dime on the aft corner of the hull. Mixed gelcoat pigment with the resin until I had the color correct, then added the catalyst per instructions. The results were easy to work with. Working on a vertical surface, I had no sags. I'm very pleased with th results. The last gelcoat work I did was 45 Year's ago. It didn't go well. This time, it was a much better experience.

Worked for me!

I'm a novice and this worked nicely. I rolled it on and although it is a pain to sand down, I loved working with it. I used this on the bottom of a 13' Boston Whaler because I liked the idea of fresh gel coat vs paint on the bottom. Primarily for it's hard finish and water resistance. I used this in questionably cold temp (ran the heat in the garage) and it setup even in tough conditions (should have finished before winter).

I used the White Gelcoat with wax, because the repair that I was doing had to be exposed to air. I figured I would have problems with it since the weather I had to apply it in was not ideal. To my surprise it set up and cured perfectly. No soft spots at all. I love the stuff.

Terrible Instructions

JD givese conflicting instructions on mixing MEPK depending on where you look. The gel coat bottle says 2 tsp per quart. Ok, but what if I need to mix 2 ounces? The website instructions caution against exceeding 2% (what would happen if you add too much?). Then, the Gel Coat video part 2 says never add more than 30% MEPK!!! I get that cooler temps will require more MEPK, but what's the deal!!? JD provides no good resource to help the noob use the product if they have tool and shop skills but zero experience with gel coat.

Used this to gelcoat back side of travel trailer with tons of spider cracks and a bit of fiberglass damage. Easy to mix. My results were average because settings on air equip were off. I finished with a foam roller. The age of the trailer dictated a perfect finish was not in order. Included wax made drying time < 24hrs as it was abt 75 sq ft. Overall happy as this was my first time using gelcoat.

Neutral Air dry gel coat works well.

I have used this product to repair the deck of a red fiberglass kayak and it worked well. Using color agents from Jamestown I was able to get a very good color match. But to quart size is too large. A 1/2 pint size would be handy and there are no directions for mixing small amounts. I would love to have didrections for mixing an ounce of gel coat with drops of the MEK. I ended up using 16 drops per ounce and it seemed to be OK.

Questions

Q: Can I use TotalBoat Gelcoat with Wax (white) over plastic and epoxy? I had a ""professional"" re-coat the bottom of a plastic/poly Delta shower and tub insert. I believe he used a roll-on epoxy or gelcoat application to resurface the bottom of the tub and shower. Over the years it's started flaking off hard chips of paint. I assume I need to sand the surface completely and prep accordingly. I purchased the gelcoat with wax. I realize now the wax version should be the final coat but I'm wondering if I can sand between coats if multiple coats are needed. ... or do I need to go a different direction? I've watched a lot of videos about using gelcoat for tub resurfacing but nothing specifically regarding gelcoat over plastic.

A: Hi Brady. Neither epoxy nor plastic are suitable substrates for gelcoat. Plastic is a difficult material to coat in general, but if you'd like our best detailed recommendations for this project, please give us a call at 800-497-0010 or send us an email at info@totalboat.com.

A: If you sand it well you can overcoat your old gelcoat with new gelcoat to restore the shine. It will have to be wet sanded and buffed after applying the gelcoat. Q: I'm planning on refinishing the cockpit of my Maritime Skiff with Total Boat Gelcoat with wax. Is there an additive that can be used to ""flatten"" the finish for the sole of the boat. Q: I have a 2004 Compac Eclipse sloop that it needs a bunch of gelcoat repair...deep scratches/cracks. Aside from sanding, what products would you recommend for this repair? Is TotalBoat gelcoat w/wax the right product for the job? Anything else I would need? Since the gelcoat color is beige/cream, what can I use to achieve the proper match?

A: Hello, thanks for reaching out. If the cracks are wider than a hair, I would recommend using a Dremel to open them up, then fill it with our Polyester Structural Repair Putty. If the cracks are less than a hair wide, you could use our Polyester Fairing Compound, then go over the top with gelcoat. We sell Pigments that can be added to gelcoats to achieve the right color. Q: I thinned 4 oz of totalboat white gelcoat (with wax) with 15% styrene, then added 10 drops of MEKP per oz of gelcoat (40 drops). (I thinned it to spray it with a Preval sprayer, but the sprayer didn't work very well, so I ended up brushing it on. And I only added 10 drops/oz of MEKP because I wanted a longer working time.) It's been 24 hours and the gelcoat has not cured. It's still sticky and will come off on my finger tips. I'm in Beaufort, SC and the average temp has been 70*F (80 in the day, 60 at night). Will it eventually cure or do I need to remove it and start over? If I need to remove it, what do I remove it with? Thanks.
