Do I Need to Etch & Prime First?

It's no secret that it's hard to get paint to stick to aluminum. Success usually involves sanding, etching, and applying a toxic chromate primer.

With TotalBoat Aluminum Boat Paint, etching is essential for proper adhesion. This finish has an advanced, polyurethane formula that makes it bond strongly and durably on properly-prepared surfaces, even without priming. It's also more environmentally friendly because it's chromate-free, with an extremely low VOC content and almost no odor.

The surface prep is actually fast and easy for bare aluminum in good condition—just clean thoroughly to remove any dirt, oil, grease or contaminants, then dry completely. If the bare aluminum has a dull, oxidized look, use 220-grit to sand until shiny, remove sanding residue, wipe with denatured alcohol or use TotalBoat Aluminum Boat Etch Wash as directed, and allow to dry completely before immediately applying TotalBoat Aluminum Boat Paint.

Bad batch of paint

This paint did not cover bare aluminum and aluminum prepared with a primer. I applied 5 coats and it still did not cover. I called your customer service and they refunded me the cost of the paint. I think it must have been a bad batch of paint . Your company resolved the matter immediately.

Worked great on my mast!

My mast and boom had been painted many years ago and looked really beat up. My boat is a 1977 Islander 32. The orbital sander with some 220 grit made quick work of the flaking paint. I wiped it all down with denatured alcohol. The new paint went on easy and dried quickly. I just did the lower sections that you can see but some day I'll pull the mast and do it all. In the meantime, it really looks sharp!

Easy to apply and sheen is perfect for my aluminum john boat

I purchased one quart of TotalBoat Aluminum Boat Topside Paint to test for ease of application using my old spray guns. I test applied over prepped bare aluminum and previously painted aluminum. I am very happy with the results so far. The paint was easy to apply without thinning using HVLP gravity gun. I was able to achieve 6 wet mill application (I recall instructions call for 7) but I think 6 is the max I could do with sags. The paint dried reasonably quickly (wintertime in Florida so unheated temp was just barely above 50F) and would have benefited from heating. I did get some fish-eyes where I sprayed onto unsanded paint, so make sure you prep well! A second coat was easily applied atop the dry-to-touch first coat without sanding. After several days curing (paint didn't require that long, I was busy doing other stuff), I sanded with 220 (instructions say 320 but I couldn't find my stash) and applied a final coat. You will want to use 320 to reduce sanding swirls. Final matt/satin finish looks great. After about a week cure time, I can mar the finish with a wooden dowel, but I am unable to scratch through to metal. I do wonder if this final finish would benefit from addition of a hardner, but I assume none is available for this easy to use water based product.

I would consider buying this product again.

Product went on well, and dried in timely fashion. The color was much lighter than what I was expecting 'Army Green' to be. It covered a lot of old glue and discolorations.

TotalBoat Aluminum Boat Paint is an excellent product. This paint is very easy to apply, I just rolled it on to achieve a professional looking finish. It also adheres very well without the need for priming. The colour was true to the description. Very happy with this product and have already ordered more. Customer service and delivery are top notch.

Good stuff

Although I cannot comment on durability YET, I can say I really like the way it handles. Having used several OEM john boat paints this TB stuff is a little easier to handle (thicker) and is water based. Dries timely...not too fast, not too slow. If it takes a lickin in the creek, I'll really like it!

Q: I have a seaark 2072 aluminum boat, I am In process of removing the gatorhide nonskid as it is peeling from the aluminum deck in multiple spots. I plan on etching the aluminum and have ordered the total boat aluminum boat paint. What do you recommend as far as putting the total boat non-skid over the aluminum boat paint, or is there another way I should be going about this? I want to get this right the first time as it is alot of work.

A: The TotalTread datasheet posted on the website recommends etching the aluminum with TotalBoat Aluminum Etch Wash, priming with TotalBoat Aluminum Barrier Coat, then applying Total Tread. You can find complete instructions at this link: https://doc.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/pdfs/TotalBoat/totalboat-totaltread-tds-2.8.22.pdf

A: I did not use a primer. This was used on aluminum windows frames on my 93. They were painted prior so I lightly sanded them down and applied the paint. I also applied a clear coat. Two years later, they look great

Q: I'm painting an aluminum (jet) river boat, its currently down to bare aluminum I'm going to seal the seams and rivets with Gluvit and than paint. The boat will be taken out of the water daily occasionally be left in the water for 24-72 hours but not on a regular basis and fresh water only. Can I use Total boat aluminum boat paint one part topside finish for aluminum boats, below the waterline as well and is this a paint you would recommend for my application? also I was planning on using a self etching primer on the boat before painting a very light thin coat than lightly sanding down before painting will that help the paint adhere to the aluminum better? Thank you

A: The Aluminum etching is a good idea but I would not use topside paint below the waterline. Any submersion more than a few days will damage the paint. I recommend TotalBoat Aluminum Barrier Coat and Krypton paint for below the waterline.

Q: Do I need to use a primer before applying this above water line on pontoons? The Tech Data Sheet state ""For applications that require a barrier coat..."", what type of application is that?. I have unpainted pontoons that I have already applied barrier coat and AF to below waterline section.

1 Answer

A: Hello, thanks for reaching out. The barrier coat should be applied below the waterline, or anywhere where you want extra adhesion. If you have extra barrier coat I would say go for it, as it can only help to create extra bond. But if you want to paint directly to the metal, you can do that as well. Just follow the instructions on the data sheet. I hope this clears things up for you! Zackary Hovey-Cook Total Support Tech (800) 497-0010 Ask for Zack

Q: Can you put a final coat of Diamond Clear Coat Urethane over Total Boat Top Side Aluminum polyurethane paint after sanding 2nd coat then applying a third and final coat of Total Boat without sanding the third coat of Total Boat Aluminum Boat Paint

A: Hey Bob, Thank you for reaching out. We do not have experience with that product so we cannot speak to the compatibility. For any cross brand use we recommend a test first. Typically we recommend the Aluminum topside paint as a standalone product. More coats the better.

Q: I have a 17' aluminum boat that is painted with the factory green paint. Can I paint over that paint with this light gray without taking all down to the aluminum?

2 Answers

A: I painted my Mirrocraft and sanded it all over but not always down to bare metal. I was impressed at how well it stuck on both the raw aluminum and the old paint. I painted professionally for many years and it is an easy product to use. I sprayed it with a conventional spray rig but I think you could get adequate results using other methods. The material did not have a great ""hide"", in other words it took more paint than I thought to get the full uniform color and it is a matte finish so it won't be glossy. If you have concerns, I would try a small section of your boat and let it dry for a day or so depending on your weather and do the fingernail test. If you can scrape or scratch it off with your fingernail, there's obviously something wrong, most likely the surface wasn't clean of dust or perhaps wax. But as for sticking, yes, I was impressed at how well it stuck. I was totally satisfied.

Q: The paint is called ""top side"" paint. I want to paint the bottom side (below the water line) on a 18ft Crestliner and then apply a fouling paint, so I can leave the boat in the water. Is this a good (correct) application for this paint. If not can you recommend something different?

A: Use bottom paint for aluminum boats for the area in the water. Use this product for surfaces above the waterline.
