Varnish best, JD customer service better

The varnish doesn't get much better than this unless you cut it yourself. Bought this for a project and screwed up the order so didn't get to take advantage of the special JD was running at the time(my mistake, not JD's). Melanie at customer service was a trooper and got me the special despite my ignorance. Tough to eat crow and have the distributor be nice to you at the same time. They have my business.

Great Product

I used 2 quarts to do the project in the pics. The first 2 coats took double the time the can says to set up, because of the fresh cpes. I used to seal the new Marine grade plywood. The work was not done in a controlled environment but turned out pretty nice due to the quality of the product. I highly recommend Epifanes Clear Gloss Varnish.

Spectacular gloss

My boat's teak trim has never looked better. Epiphanes' high gloss is the best I've seen, and I've used most of the well-known brands...Captain's, Flagship, and Bristol Finish among them. I applied six coats of Epiphanes Wood Finish overlaid by two coats of Epiphanes gloss varnish, and the results are excellent. No judgment yet on longevity (that's why I rated it 4 stars instead of 5), but other owners in my marina have used Epiphanes and say good things about it.

Time Will Tell

The varnish goes on nice over CPES. The first coat or two took longer to set up because of the epoxy. After that it sets up nice and smooth, but its hard to review its performance regarding longevity. It does seem to be a popular varnish that others have had success with.

High gloss, great look

Superior gloss to any varnish I've used...including Captain's, Flagship, and Bristol Finish. The jury's still out on longevity but others have told me it's pretty good. Lays on easily and smoothly and self-levels well. Sensitive to over-brushing, especially in warm weather.

Excellent varnish

Went on beautifully. A bit thick but I thinned it with mineral spirits which did not change the finish at all. Very good varnish based upon my initial application. Cannot vouch for how long it will last.

Outdoor mahogany's best friend

I made Adirondack chairs out of mahogany but don't like that ""beautiful weathered grey"" look that happens when left out in sun and rain. Two years after using epifanes those chairs are the same deep red color as the day the varnish was applied.

Best Varnish for maximum UV protection

I have applied this finish both by rolling and spraying. I have a home built cedar strip canoe that has been stored mostly outdoors and the Epiphanes Gloss Varnish has lasted for 10 years. It is now time to restore the finish and I fully expect it to last another 10 years. Thanks for a great product.

long life

While reading up on how tos for vanishing my boats teak, I discovered how hard it is to care for finished bright work. From the every day wiping down dew before the morning sun dries it to re-varnishing every six months, and the worst, cover your boat with some blue canvas fitted to snap over everything , basically hide all that beautiful work that you have done so you never get to look at it or have people drool over your boat as they walk by. Through a recommendation I chose Epifanes. A year an a half and it looks exactly the same. I have never once gone out in the early morning to dry off dew or sanded it down for a re-coat. It has held up to everything I have put it through. As a beginner I have a few minor regrets on the changes I have made to my boat, using this product is one of my best decisions.

Great deal

I use this varnish on the small amt of brightwork that is inside of the cabin and on the exterior of my Seasprite 23. I use about five coats to give a deep glossy finish. I'm not to picky so I get away using a chip brush or a foam brush. This was a deal I couldn't pass up after I had already purchased the same varnish form a competing company at a much higher price. JD usually delivers to me in one day.

Best Flowing of all I've Used

I'm on year 3 after doing a Tayana 48. If anyone knows how much teak is on a Tayana, between 48ft of 10inch cap rails, swim platform, cockpit, etc. you will more than get the picture. After 5 coats, I did top it off with 2 coats of Bristol Finish for hardness. It looks the same as it did when I finished her, 2&1/2 years later. Even in the hot Florida sun. The owner has been out cruising along the Gulf Coast and is always asked what he used for the finish. So he calls me to remind him of what I put on. Tremendous gloss and the shear amount of finished teak is what gets noticed. I liked its flow properties during application.

2-can kit is great!

I'm not a professional woodworker, so I wasn't sure how much varnish I needed for the small assorted teak parts on my boat. After deciding to get a second can ""just in case"" I noticed this new 2-can kit, which includes some necessary sundries to do some standard varnish work. It's cheaper than buying (2) cans separately, plus you get some ""free"" goods out of the deal. This was a no-brainer!

Beautiful shine

I gave it a 4 because the first time I used it, I applied at full strength and it only last two years and then cracked and turned ugly. This time I started with 50/50 mixture (50% thinner) and gradually increased it on each application to 70/30, 80/20 for the finished coat. I also upgraded the brush to professional and it appears to have made a hugh difference in smoothness and final finish. I wet sanded with 800 sandpaper between each coat. Now, we'll see how long it last, however, it does look like glass now.

Q: i am planning to use this on a mohogany door 1) will it bring out the color 2) protect 3) how much will I need to cover 36x 80 both sides properly

1 Answer

A: I find that it gives mahogany a rich beautiful color. No need to stain the wood. The best way to get longevity out of CV is to build up at least 7 coats, then do regular maintenance coats to refresh the top layers that are bearing the brunt of the UV damage. A 1000ml can will cover @150 sq ft with one coat. Check out this link vor the tech sheet: https://www.epifanes.com/related/375cab1e-12c0-4cbe-a6bc-47553f259588.pdf

Q: hi, is there a way to reduce the water marks on peeled varnish (other than deep sanding) before refinishing with new varnish? Thanks in advance Van

1 Answer

A: Unfortunately, there is no easy fix for that. Remove the varnish, clean the wood with a two part teak cleaner, sand with 220 and recoat. To prevent varnish from flaking, apply 10 to 12 coats to start, and reapply regular maintenance coats once or twice a year.

Q: Hello, I'm restoring an antique Triumph with a wood dash. I've applied a waterfall bubinga veneer and looking for the best way to finish it. The bubinga has beautiful grain and I don't want to darken it, but I do want high gloss and of course good UV protection. I'm fine with multiple coats and long drying time. What would you suggest? Thanks! Don

1 Answer

A: The Epifanes clear high gloss varnish will darken it a little but the grain will still be visible and highlighted with the high gloss. It will provide good UV protection.
