I used this varnish on the outside of my Douglas fir (west-facing) windows of my 1924 home. I loved the resulting tone and also the sheen. It is excellent product.

Fly rod finish

What's good for boats has to be good for bamboo fly rod building. With dilutions of 50%-80% I'm getting great coverage and control. Diluting it figure what works best for you. Expensive yes and so are my rods. So use the best.

Expensive...but the best there is for boat varnish!

It seems in this day and age someone could come up with a varnish that does not cpst and arm and a leg, that lasts at least a year with only two or three coats!!!!!!! Who has the time or money to put on six coats!!!!!! I give up after three coats, and often pay the price of scrape down to teak!!!

I've been using this product on a lot of our exterior wood projects. Front doors holds up amazingly well downside is the drying time but most of our exterior doors are done in the workshop drying time is not as much of a concern as on site.

I would buy this product again

I applied this varnish to bear wood and it came out beautifully. Very deep amber, and perfectly smooth. That said, it is recommended that you apply eight coats, with sanding between coats, and it took 24+ hours for each coat to dry. So, it was fine because I refinished boat parts in my basement over the winter, but if you need to finish something quickly, this may not be for you.

Great for outdoor protection

I use this marine varnish to protect outdoor Teak furniture. The UV protection is great, particularly if multiple coats are applied. I wish I had a sailboat with Teak decking, but alas, No.

Disappointment by Comparison

I used this varnish at the recommendation of another builder, and against my better judgement I bought it and am stuck with the remaining 2 of 3 pints. I'm disappointed that even following the sanding, coverage, and thinning directions to the tee, it hasn't performed. It spreads as it's laid down, i.e. lacks flow if used with a brush, sags on thinner coats on vertical surfaces (even when laid down extremely thin), shows any ""off track"" with the brush strokes and when laid on thicker binds in the brush and surface. I use another brand that has the same synonym as a skipper of boat (not sure we can compare brands in these reviews - which though I struggled with at times, it has a way more consistent hold, flow, and spreads evenly in a ""self-correcting"" manner. I know because I was laying down both brands at the same time in the exact same conditions. I'm going back to my original varnish - now let me do a review for that one! I'm not laying down another pint of this stuff and will go with the other brand - it's really top notch by comparison. Sad thing is that there are no returns on paints - my bad not to know this in advance. Don't buy unless your sure or want to eat the cost.

poor information

I used this varnish over Total Boat epoxy. In the product description it says it can be applied over epoxy after light sanding. I know there is a wax that rises to the surface of epoxy, so I wiped it down with mineral spirits. The varnish did not cure. Product support told me the epoxy should be rinsed with soap and water. They said it says this in the product description. After much searching I found the info hidden deeply. I feel the info on the can was misleading.

Best spar varnish I've found. Takes a little work but six coats or so wear like armor. I like to add a couple of matte top coats for a gorgeous finish. Stands up to this Texas sun.

Over 100 years of consistent quality

I was told that varnish would never hold up on a porch floor in New Jersey weather then I found Epifanes paints and varnishes. I followed their recommendations for application and gave it a try. That was 6 years ago and it just took a little light sanding and a fresh coat to bring it back to looking great. Definitely worth the price and time.

Went on very nice

I stained red oak boards for the bed of my 1958 chevy pickup then varnished with Epifanes. It went on very smooth and I waited 24 hours to sand in between each coat, there is 24 sq ft of wood so I was able to get 5 coats out of 1 qt. I used the Epifanes thinner to thin the first 3 coats. I used a Badger brush and for a change didn't have one hair left in the varnish.
