Excellent product, made better with free shipping

I like the 2 liter Epifanes varnish kit. It's a great deal with the inclusion of 2 mixing pails/pots, strainers, brushes and latex gloves, and made even better with free shipping. With the addition of all of these things, I don't believe you can beat the price Jamestown offers! I'll be ordering again soon.

The Safety Data Sheet for this product states the product should be disposed of with household products without giving any clue as to how one is to dispose of the extra used product. They could have done a better job in informing the consumer.

Bad Batch/Bad Product?

Followed the instructions on the can, including using the Epiphanes brush thinner. Application of product was difficult. It looked great while wet (nice and smooth). As it dried, the finish became matted/lumpy. Second though the fourth coat did the same thing. Customer service said that it must be an issue with how I was applying it or thinning it, What a joke. I've been finishing woodwork for 25+ years and never had an issue like this. Did I get a bad batch from Jamestown or is this the way the product is supposed to look when it dies? It's looks horrible.

Bad Batch?

Goes on smooth, but as it sets up, the finish turns lumpy in appearance. Horrible appearance! Left with no other choice but to completely strip the piece and redo with an alternate product. Customer service didn't seem to feel it was an issue. I've been finishing woodwork and doors for 30 years, and I've never run into an issue like this with other products that are a lot less expensive (i.e, Lenmar Spar). Maybe I received a bad batch?

great product - bad customer service

Shipping is a problem. Larger cans have their lids secured by locking wedges but small cans (250 ml) are simply taped over. My shipment arrived with one can open and spilled all over the inside of the box. It was a nightmare to unpack and clean up the rest of the cans for use. When I complained to Jamestown, I was ignored. Not good customer service or attention to detail. Maybe their product is great but if it arrives in unusable condition, what have you gained.

To longer to dry than 24 hours but it was at 50 degreess outside air temp in my garage, on the low end of the spectrum for varnishing. I called the Epifanes and they said I could do it as long as above 33 but would be harder to apply and take longer to dry as expected.

Wonder product. Make sure to follow their directions. First coats you need to dilute with a brush thinner. My suggestion is to use theirs, even if you already have some at home. Use Epifanes brand brush thinner.

Good Varnish

Using this varnish on my 1966 Century Arabian. Seems to have good self-leveling and easy to apply when using fresh varnish. Gets a little thick after you've opened the container a few times, so you may need to thin it if you are using small amounts at a time. Great looking finished product.

Good for exterior wood in New Mexico

About three years ago I used Epifanes to seal a hand-carved wooden bench we bought at the Hispanic Arts Pavillion at the New Mexico State Fair. Didn't want to risk it drying out, cracking and turning gray as wood does so easily in Albuquerque, with the high altitude sun, temperature extremes and very low humidity. It's still perfect, and still looks exactly as it did right after I put on the final coat. I'm getting some to do the front door.

Q: i am planning to use this on a mohogany door 1) will it bring out the color 2) protect 3) how much will I need to cover 36x 80 both sides properly

1 Answer

A: I find that it gives mahogany a rich beautiful color. No need to stain the wood. The best way to get longevity out of CV is to build up at least 7 coats, then do regular maintenance coats to refresh the top layers that are bearing the brunt of the UV damage. A 1000ml can will cover @150 sq ft with one coat. Check out this link vor the tech sheet: https://www.epifanes.com/related/375cab1e-12c0-4cbe-a6bc-47553f259588.pdf

Q: hi, is there a way to reduce the water marks on peeled varnish (other than deep sanding) before refinishing with new varnish? Thanks in advance Van

1 Answer

A: Unfortunately, there is no easy fix for that. Remove the varnish, clean the wood with a two part teak cleaner, sand with 220 and recoat. To prevent varnish from flaking, apply 10 to 12 coats to start, and reapply regular maintenance coats once or twice a year.

Q: Hello, I'm restoring an antique Triumph with a wood dash. I've applied a waterfall bubinga veneer and looking for the best way to finish it. The bubinga has beautiful grain and I don't want to darken it, but I do want high gloss and of course good UV protection. I'm fine with multiple coats and long drying time. What would you suggest? Thanks! Don

1 Answer

A: The Epifanes clear high gloss varnish will darken it a little but the grain will still be visible and highlighted with the high gloss. It will provide good UV protection.

A: I would imagine that if can still feel the grain of the wood, the Epifanes would be fine. It has a nice gloss finish that I have to touch up every couple of years. Hope this helps. Peace ?? On Monday, July 10, 2023, Jamestown Distributors <
