Product Details

Epifanes rapid varnishes offer quick and easy protection in harsh marine and outdoor conditions. They can be applied without sanding in between coats for up to 3 coats in 18 hours (One every 5-6 hours in optimal conditions). These modified alkyd urethane resin varnishes are great for repairing nicks and dings in existing finishes.

Epifanes Rapidclear Varnish is a fast and easy alternative to conventional varnishes, and can be used on interior and exterior woods above the waterline. Rapid Clear has a clear finish with no tint. It provides an enhancing UV protection film and bonds extremely well to teak and other oily woods, preventing discoloration and emphasizing the natural wood grain. Only 4-5 coats are needed under most conditions. Available in Clear and Clear Matte in 750 mL containers.

Epifanes Rapidcoat Varnish can be used for renewing weathered areas as a stain prior to a varnish system, or as a full system for those requiring the absolute best in a quick and easy satin finish with maximum durability, UV protection, and longevity. Only 4-5 coats are needed under most conditions. Available in 750 mL containers.

Highly Recommded for Weathered Teak

Great Tinted Varnish for refinishing weathered wood, especially exterior wood that needs just a bit more even color added after you've done your sanding and applied a Teak Sealer as a primer. For me with Teak pieces, 2 coats of RapidCoat generally do it . Then you add Clear Varnish coats after that as needed for more UV protection without adding anymore color to the wood grain.

Great product

I have refinished numerous furniture pieces over the years but have never had the occasion to use Epifanes Rapid. We constructed a new house with a mahogany entry door and I was leery of using a spar varnish since the results are spotty at best. I reasoned that using a boat type varnish would fit the bill and decided on Epifanes. The results are amazing. I applied 4 coats thinned about 15% and couldn't be happier with the look and feel of the door. time will tell if it holds up to the weather but initial results are extremely satisfying. I also like the fact that I can re-coat without sanding which increases efficiency of the system overall. I would definitely recommend this product.

Worked great

Had 17 exterior colums with a Walnut stain to refinish that were poorly done and hadn't been touched in 6 years being exposed to California sun. Cleaned dirt with mineral spirit, filled cracks with exterior exterior wood sealer, sanded with 320, wiped with sticky rags to remove dust, wiped on American Walnut stain with old T-shirt rags. Applied first diluted Rapid coat with Epifane 1 1/2 brush. Diluted with 50% mineral spirit. Applied second coat with rapid coat, 10% diluted. Applied third and fourth coat the same. No brush marks. Although recommendation for Rapid Coat is not to dilute, I was afraid it wouldn't adhere well, hence the 50% dilution first. The 10% was needed to achieve better flow since all the surfaces were vertical. I didn't sand between coat and the results were astonishing. I am hoping that I have to recoat every two years instead of every year, but time will tell.

Acres of Varnish!

Usually requires some thinning (turpentine) and a bit of Penatrol is advised. Application of several coats of Woodfinish Gloss (no sanding between coats) followed by light sanding then two coats of the Clear (sand between them) for maximum weather protection and UV shielding. This comes close to the maximum protecion that I have seen.

Great Product

I used this to build up coats on the interior of a 1959 Barbour speedboat. The boat has a lap-strake plywood hull which is not the pretiest nor smoothest wood to finish. With only 2 coats, the interior looks great! I wish I would have used this product on some other varnishing projects...it would have cut days and at least 10 coats of regular varnish.

Rapid Coat over Smiths Epoxy, swim deck

Refinished teak swim platform on old boat. Choose product for better look than Sikens. Put product over Smiths Clear Epoxy. Appled 4 coats with no sanding in between and finish coat over lightly sanded platform. In Lake Erie climate product did not make it thru one season. I will be feathering in with light sanding in between and applying 3 coats of high gloss with more uv content. Hang on kids, it's going to be a slippery ride this year.

needed to thin

i had to thin this product to use on a new front door. it was just too thick to blend quickly without drying out. I also sanded lightly between coats.

Wish I hadn't bought two quarts

This would probably be fine on a large surface that can be brushed out quickly. I used it on installed casement windows with muntins. Too many small fussy surfaces. This varnish puddled and dripped and had to be gone over and over to eliminate these before they dried. I was working in humid conditions, 70s to low 80s temperatures. After this I will use a stain of my own making and a clear urethane. I doubt that I will get the lovely color of Rapid Coat or the even coloration over the grain but I expect I'll be less aggravated.

A: Generally we recommend at least 4 to 6 coats of clear gloss and finish with 2 coats of matte.

Q: Do you sand before first Rapid clear coat?

A: I sand before the first coat of rapid clear. If there is a previous finish that is in good condition and nicely flat, i just lightly scuff it to remove the gloss. Epifanes recommends degreasing the surface as well.

Q: I am making wood top table for outdoors in Houston (humid and rainy). Going to sand and distress raw wood and stain a color. Then I'm looking to use an Epifanes product to seal with a very thick clear coat. Is it best to use both Rapid Coat and Rapid Clear Varnish or only the varnish? And how many coats of one or both?

2 Answers

A: Rapid coat has a fairly dark tint, so it is good if you want to match another piece for color or just darken a light wood, then top coat with several coats of Rapid Clear. You can adjust the tint by using more or less coats of Rapid Coat. If the wood is the color you want already, just use Rapid clear. This product is great for outdoors as it will not blister if applied correctly, but it will need a fresh top coat or two every year or two; this is easy though, no sanding is required - ever, unless you want a super finish. But then it is a semi gloss anyway, or maybe a bit glossier than semi. I like it for my sailboat's exterior teak.

Q: can it be applied to steel?

2 Answers

A: I'm not a chemist, so please take my answer with a grain of salt... But I'm 99.9% sure you will be very disappointed with the result if you try to put this product on steel. Probably 99.999% sure. If you need a good, clear, protective coating for steel I would look into an epoxy coating. If you just have a small application, this stuff might do the trick: Google Brownell's Metal Coat Epoxy. It comes in a spray can, is used by gunsmiths. If you have a more industrial or bigger project you might see what luck you have at a Sherwin Williams store... Most of those guys are __quote__house paint__quote__ retailers so you might nothing get a glassy eyed stare... but SW does carry a wide line of industrial coating products. A: Do not know. Have always used it over bare sealed wood. It depends on adhesion to the paint; probably should sand paint lightly Good luck

A: Yes, I have it on my Doug Fir front door, it looks great. No problem with water exposure, I also use it on my boat. For it to really look great you will want at least 5 coats.
