Product Details

>This fiberglass cloth features a #1708 E-glass Biaxial (+/-45 degree) pattern with 3/4 oz mat backing. The fiberglass tows are held together by light nylon stitching which do not affect the structural integrity of the cloth.

The flat non-crimped fibers yield reduced print-thru and higher stiffness than other woven fabrics. The mat backing adds extra thickness and makes for a smoother finished product when applied over scratches and dents. This biaxial fiberglass cloth is ideal for boat repairs, tabbing, and reinforcing.

Available in 5 sizes for your boatbuilding, wet layup, or lamination projects.

Great for the boat repairs I was making. Delivery was fast and it was packaged well. The best part was that the mat came rolled and not folded!

Nothing bad to say about this product, worked perfectly. Wets out well and stays in place. Used this to reinforce port side of Mutineer sailboat hull where hull was very soft due to storm damage and badly done previous repair.

Great product for strengthening a corner

I needed a strong fiberglass to strengthen a corner of my sailboat. After adhering a triangular piece of mahogany in the corner using thickened epoxy, I used the biaxial fiberglass over the top to finish it off. Electric scissors' worked better to cut this material than manual scissors for some reason.

    Good thick glass

We used this product with 5:1 epoxy to replace the core in a fuel locker cover. It is a very thick glass and worked well. It does require a whole lot of epoxy to fully wet it. Easy to cut and work with.

Glass came rolled, which is good. Easily worked. Did not seem to absorb the resin easily, not sure why. Used on bottom of wood drift boat.

    Not for all

Had a hard time to laminate areas with tight bends and difficult to sand smooth. There is a heavy single strand running in 1 direction that does not want to bend or smooth out. Chopped stand mat follows curves much better and sands better but not sure which would be stronger. I think this would be god for flat things not curves.

    My standard go to fabric

Universal use for most applications, for the average repair this is great. Some say it is hard to Wet out ? Not so! There is a degree of technique with anything you use. You can Wet the chopped side lightly then flip it over and Wet the top a little heavy then put the next layer on it , or you can Wet the surface a little heavy and lay the fabric on it , let it absorb into it a few mins then add resin as needed . Once you start the build up and the Wet out begins between layers it is much easier to maintain. Once you get some experience with it, it is a joy to use. Peel ply makes the finished product very nice, get a nice roller and SLOWLY toll out the air and excess resin, you will be very happy with the result.

Yes, but perhaps not from you.

This is not the first time I purchased 1708 from you, but it may be the last time. The roll I got this time was package well enough but when I unrolled the cloth I was disappointed at how frayed and distorted both ends were. There were also five pieces of masking tape on one end spaced about 8 inches apart on the chop strand side which could not be removed without pulling off a substantial amount of fibers. As a result, I ended up with way too much wasted material.

In this crazy time, Jamestown was able to get the product to me in record time. Thanks to Andy from Boatworkstoday for leading me to this great company, and product. I used to use the strips over a larger area which was time consuming. The Biaxial Fiberglass sheets can be cut to size and easily applied with epoxy resin. Love that they came in rolls rather than folded. Makes for an smoother application. Great product, Great Company,

It was a bit thicker than expected..my fault

I build a battery box for 4 12v batteries for my new electric motor. I wanted fiber glass that would reinforce and cover the base. This glass is pretty thick. I should have ordered thinner. I'm new to fiberglassing. The material arrived on time and neatly packaged. This Mat is better for large flat surfaces in my opinion. I will NOT hesitate to order from Jamestown again!

I purchased a 1990 hurricane deck boat that had been neglected for years. The foam was saturated with water and most of the wood stringers was rotted or rotting. After researching many options I came across 1708. I am glad I ordered and used this product in my total boat rebuild.

Great product for fast thickness build and durability

First impression is that this is some thick material, great for fast lamination, or single layer over wood. I was pleased to see that the product is shipped rolled up, not folded, to avoid kinks in the glass. I used this as a glass layer over a replacement plywood transom on a dinghy. I will use it again as a tough deck lamination over plywood. I used west system epoxy, best to not overwork the material. Requires minimum fairing after installation. Great fiberglass!

    great price , American Made

I used this type of cloth for most everything. I have seen people say it is hard to wet out, not really. Lay some resin down first, place cloth over it and lay some resin on the top , work it with a brush slightly and wait a minute or two. Then add additional resin as needed on top. It wets out great and you have plenty of time to work it if you are using the correct hardener . This cloth does not wet out clear it turns green , keep that in mind for your application . The cloth will form arround contours very well once wet out. I have used it in multi stress loaded areas by positioning the layers in different directions , or you could use triaxial or quadraxial cloth but the don't contour as well.

    Nice Product

Quality fiberglass mat. I used this product when I re-cored floor hatches. I used it in conjuction with TotalBoat epoxy and balsa core. This was my first time recoring hatches and my first time using biaxial cloth. It is a bit difficult to fully wet the cloth; you have to spend some time working the resin into the cloth. This was not an issue on a horizontal surface, but might be difficult on a vertical surface. That said - My hatches are now rock solid. After re-coring two rotted hatches, I used this mat to add another layer on a floor hatch that had IMO too much flex - it is now rock solid too.

    perfect material

i've fixed three transoms on glasrtron boats now and this is the best product i have used. it wets well but you need to make sure that the resin is at a warm temperature. i had the resin in the garage and it was a little thick at first. the flat roller and corner roller work great when forming. for the beginners, try to wet the structure and both sides of cloth before you lay it in. of coarse i mean this when you use it on a vertical not horizontal. good luck! jamestown was the best price for all the materials i purchased. resin, rollers, fiberglass(cloth, mat) and don't forget the pumps.

Q: I am replacing the plywood deck with Coosa board same thickness as what is being removed. I want to use 1708 biaxial with 5:1 epoxy for the deck on the boat. Would it be strong enough with only one layer of the 1708? or should I go with two layers and use a different type after the 1708. I will be final costing it with tuff coat.

    1 Answer

A: One layer will be very strong but no way to tell it will be enough with the information given. Best to call the TotalSupport team and speak to a tech.

A: A hand layup (non-vacuum bagged) where the excess resin is limited would need 12 layers of 1708 biaxial to result in a 1/2"" thick laminate.
