Quality Resin

I was concerned about the viscosity when poring out of the can but it was just right when used with either mat of biaxial. It didn't run when used vertically. I also used it with glass microspheres with good results.

Great for final coat to cure laminating resin or structural repair putty. Great for mixing thickened resin that you want to sand. Doesn't clog up sanding pads when sanding.

Finishing Resin viscosity not suitable for my project.

I'm completing the build of a Bocar XP-5 Sports Car Special. The original fiberglass shell body is one piece that requires cutting out of hood, rear deck lid, doors etc.. There's no fault for TotalBoat, I just ordered the wrong resin. I have located a Bondo resin with proper viscosity for lay-up. All other items in this order are excellent. Thank you for your concern... I'll continue to order your products in the future.

Let me preface by saying I've used epoxy on other boat projects and I do love Total Boat epoxies. This rebuild of a really old boat was cost prohibitive to use just epoxy, as many gallons will be needed. After dithering for far too long, I bought the bullet and ordered Total Boat polyester resin. Gotta say, I'm loving it. The wet out on 1708 is very quick. With epoxy, you really have to work to wet it out due to the thicker viscosity. Total Boat polyester resin seems to just soak in with minimal working. That's great to have when you're under a time crunch and a lot of cloth to wet out before it starts to gel. This, granted, is only my second brand of polyester resin to try. But I am really liking it so far. ITs a bit scary figuring out the MEKP ratios at first, not as easy as just counting pumps of epoxy, or measuring in cups. But, a few quarts in, you get the ""feel"" of it, and you're wetting out glass quick. I'd not hesitate to recommend it to other do it yourself, weekend warriors, and others that are refurbishing/totally reconstructing old boats, or making repairs or changes to any boat. Plus, there are tons of videos, look at Tales form a Shipwright, and Boatworks Today on YouTube for inspiration and ""how to's.""

My project is getting praise from all over the World.

Other than the waxy finish dulling my bright colors i know the wax will help protect and seal the surface to hopefully help it to survive the brutal Northern Maine Weather.

How About Some Basic Mixing Directions

Hey - Totally my fault, but I mixed too little hardner and have a mess on my boat. When the resin says 1 teaspoon per quart and you provide a graduated measuring device (pipette), the natural assumption is that the graduations are in teaspoons. If they are not, please include a note card with the pipette to alert the idiot mixing it up that 1 equals 20 drops and there are 76 drops to a teaspoon. Sheesh -that's some very basic marketing that you can easily remedy. Again, I take full responsibility as there are many ways I could avoid such mishaps - like making an experimental batch first - easy. Anyway - just a suggestion - an easy fix for Jamestown Distributors.

Q: Hello, I would like to cover a painting done on a piece of polyester resin with something that is clear and will protect the painting (done in gold leaf) from the weather. Will the finishing resin be a good product for this purpose? thank-you

1 Answer

A: Polyester resin is not clear so it probably would not work well for your application. You could try coating it with TotalBoat MakerPoxy as a clear primer, then overcoat the epoxy with clear Halcyon marine varnish or Epifanes two-part clear polyurethane for UV protection. It is a good practice to make up a test panel to try out before you apply it to your finished piece.

Q: I am making some plywood panels out of 1/8 inch luan and need to waterproof them. The panels will be up to 11 feet long and a little under 28"" wide. I am planning on coating these panes with very light, 2-6 oz, fiberglass cloth. From what I have read it seems like whether I use epoxy resin or polyester resin I will still need to paint or varnish the panels for UV protection and to make them waterproof. Can you make any recommendations?

A: Good morning. What will the finished panels be used for / application? I built a layout boat for duck hunting and used 1/4"" luan, I applied 6 oz fiberglass over it. Also rolled on one more coat of TB polyester resin. I mixed into this last coat, a UV inhibitor from TB. So far everything has help up to the elements.

Q: I'm trying to create a foam sandwich laminate with polyester to save money (over epoxy). I really like using peel ply to help remove excess resin and leave a smooth surface. My question is, if can I use the finishing resin for the entire wet lay-up (1 layer of triaxial of each side of the foam) and then cover with peel ply? Will the way still be able to float to the top and cure the resin?

1 Answer

A: Peel ply is really intended for epoxy. The consensus here is that it would probably work with laminating resin which could then be overcoated with finishing resin or PVA after removing the peel ply. It may work with the finishing resin but nobody here has tried it, so we recommend trying a test strip before you apply it to your project. I may be able to test the concept during our weekly shop night. I'll follow up with you if I can get it done.

Q: I have spider cracks in my gel coat on a 20-year old canoe.structurally the canoe is solid, there are two placer where it was impacted causing a spider webbing in the gel-coat. is this finnishing resin suitable for this repair?

2 Answers

A: yes you can use that product. but there are reasons why spider cracks happen. to correct the issue the top resin should be sanded away and check the structure of the vessel in question. lay a fiber mesh and coat it with fiberglass and sand. then coat it with finish coat.
